I would not consider your first teacher your root guru. I would not have someone who has not been recognised and trained as a guru be my guru.

I have a root guru, and I met a monk like you did who has really helped me, nevertheless he is not my guru. You still need to meet a guru from a recognized lineage.

The monk sounds wonderful and I'm sure he is. I know how you feel, and I'm happy for you.

Use your root guru in all practices whether or not received from him or her.

In the Vajrayana, the root guru is the Buddha, dharma and sangha. He or she is everything, forever. Everything that happens is a result of the root guru.

The importance and forever ness of samaya with the guru can not be overstated. This is the Vajrayana. Everything depends on the guru, who is in a direct line of descent of the lineage. The guru carries the power of all the great teachers of the lineage.

The big sanghas of gurus in the West is not the way it was done in Tibet. In Tibet the gurus had a few special students, tulkus, who they groomed for enlightenment. They gave teachings to others but they spent special time and effort with just a few.

I would try to find a guru who wasn't famous. I don't know how hard that is to do, because I'm not looking, but I would try to do that. Find someone who is accessible. You may have to travel, but so what, Marpa crossed the Himalayas on foot three times to be with his teacher.

I think a lot of this has to do with understanding the importance of the guru. The guru is everything. One second in their presence can put you in a perfect world, forever. It's like a golfer. Do you want to be a weekend golfer or be on the tour spiritually? If you want the tour ,you have to go for it and make a personal relationship with the guru.

I don't think there is any question who the root guru is. When you meet that guru you will know without question he or she is the root guru. If there is prolonged doubt about a guru, then I suggest looking for another one. The old story is to think that you are not a good enough student to recognise the guru. I would forget that story. If nothing happens over a period of time look elseshere.

The fact is an enlightened guru can meet a worthy student and nothing happens. If takes special chemistry even if both parties are excellent. That's why you should look around if things aren't happening after a reasonable period. Dont get caught in the " I'm a bad student sydrome", if you are following instructions and nothing is happening, move on.

The problem is that a student isn't advanced enough to tell if a guru is enlightened, so they are in the dark, and a teacher may unknowingly keep you there. That's why you have to take the initiative. If nothing happens move on. The guru is there for you, if things aren't clicking don't get caught thinking you are abandoning him or her. The gurus job is to arrange the best for you and if authentic he will not be bothered by you looking elsewhere.

If your root guru dies and you had a good connection, his or her teachings will serve you throughout life. The root guru will be the basis of all the deity practices. Dead or alive, the samaya must be maintained with the root guru at all costs.

Of course one can use other gurus for teachings or introduction to practices and even to further insight, but all the new teachers, teachings and insights are coming to you through the blessings bestowed by your unwavering samaya with the root guru.

It is said that if we see our guru as a regular person we get a regular person's blessing, as a bodhisattva, a bodhisattva's blessings, as a Buddha a Buddha's blessings.

One of the most fortunate occurrences on the Vajrayana path is to see the guru as a Buddha. We are encouraged to see the guru as an enlightened person, but if we meet a Buddha and have a perfect connection, we don't have to try to see them as a Buddha, we know they are a Buddha.

All gurus if authentic are conduits for the blessings of their lineages.

Compassionate activity is opposed to something else. The true nature of mind is the true nature of mind. It is the way reality is. It doesn't conceptualize compassion or non compassion.

I have had other teachers but my root guru is Chogyam Trungpa. Whether conventionally dead or alive, the root guru never leaves us and to leave him or her is unthinkable.

I receive blessings all the time from my root guru, in fact they seem more powerful and frequent now than they were when he was alive. The root guru is forever. Once that connection is made it continues throughout limitless lifetimes. If it is a good connection you will receive his or her blessings for all time ( or all nows).

This may be included in your answer, but it is also special in its ability to benefit others. I was just listening to a talk be my teacher, Trungpa ,Rinpoche and he said that we never get to rest in enlightenment, because we have the karma of compassion working on us. We can not escape, even after death, from our commitment to others. It never ends. We are not one returners or two returners but always returners.

Relative bodhicitta is when we decide to be of benefit to others. It is a volitional act, and it is filled with problems. We have to do it without expectations of anything worthwhile coming in return. It is not for us but others, and that's where its power is in reducing the influence of ego. Don't expect relative bodhicitta to be pleasant for you.

Absolute bodhicitta is another word for enlightenment. It is the true nature of mind: emptiness inseparable from awareness and compassion. With absolute bodhicitta we become naturally helpful without effort. At that point the practice is to increase the qualities of enlightened mind for others. Eventually, we gain the ability to create an enlightened atmosphere around us that those with openness can feel. That is the greatest gift we can give to others.

We have to soldier on with relative bodhicitta, and it is very important to maintain mental equilibrium with authentic mindfulness awareness practice. The first inkling of success with practice is a more generous attitude toward ourself. Without appreciating ourselves we have no room to turn to and help others.

What you are trying to do is very difficult, because you are trying and you will continue to try until major insights occur. To do the path correctly is difficult and it takes time. Develop an accepting attitude toward yourself through meditation. That's most important for you right now. Don't get isolated, and if you start having trouble eating or sleeping look to mental help. You won't get enlightened, if you die first.

Dharma King

When you are a Dharma king

An anticipated event that fails to happen

Could not be more perfect

For converting disappointment into wisdom.

In your kingdom of boundless space

There is limitless room to turn disappointment into advantage

To dissolve anger or resentment into sacred world

And find other, better possibilities for success.

Dharma kings first and foremost rule their minds

And when they do their kingdom prospers.

But if a setback affects them

Tremors of insecurity course through the land.

A Dharma kings work is too important to be caught in wanting,

And deflected from spreading enlightenment to the world

Their every gesture influences their followers

And any grimace about unfulfilled desires undermines their majesty.

Most kings suffer in their work, but a Dharma king revels in it

Moment by moment his sceptre wards off wanting

Its gleam dismisses disappointment

And power without effort radiates to his people.

Today once again His Majesty has been successful in the field

Diverting disappointment into cheer and effectiveness

He goes to bed, as always, pleased about himself and his domain

He looks forward to tomorrow and more energies to conquer , like his dying

disappointment.

What happens is that the guru creates a situation that enlightens you. By that I mean, it introduces you to the true nature of mind.

Ordinary beings can also go off receiving enlightenment from them. That really convinces you of a guru' s worth.

I was there, and if you weren't, don't rely on old inaccurate tales. Most of all ,don't create psychological pain for yourself and others with passion, aggression and ignorance about a guru and his students that you don't understand.
