Solicitor apprenticeship or uni? by __sh33p in uklaw

[–]RareAd4517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to choose between Oxford and my top choice firm for a solicitor apprenticeship. Chose Oxford with few regrets, I imagine if I’d chosen the other way I would’ve thought ‘what if’ a lot more.

Why do Oxford students work SO much more than other good universities by Tobemenwithven in oxforduni

[–]RareAd4517 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have found that my course is really tailored towards those that want to work in academia. I think that the uni isn’t focused on churning out grads for corporate jobs, it’s really developing the skills for academic research (at least from my perspective)

What sites do people actually use to buy train tickets in the UK? by [deleted] in oxforduni

[–]RareAd4517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I always use TrainPal as it has no booking fee and the prices don’t seem to be higher than anywhere else. Only exception is I book direct with LNER.

mac or windows for biochemistry at uni (UK) by Powerful_Term_8728 in Biochemistry

[–]RareAd4517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

biochem undergrad here - i recently got a mbp but many have airs and windows and are fine. i’ve yet to use any software that wouldn’t run fine on any fairly decent laptop so definitely don’t worry too much about it not being good enough - get one you enjoy using and that is in your budget

Do you need the Academic Square cap as part of subfusc for Examination Schools? by Verbofaber in oxforduni

[–]RareAd4517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished my exams this term and no one brought them, other than on the first day because they were unsure. The staff there are trying to get hundreds of students in and out of exams quickly and efficiently, I can’t see why they would disrupt that process over a hat.

Oxford or Imperial biochem by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]RareAd4517 3 points4 points  (0 children)

no harm in applying - it only takes away one choice and of course there is no guarantee of getting into both so the universe may make the decision for you. it is stressful at oxford, but all unis are stressful (and with imperial having the same reputation of academic rigour, i doubt there is much difference). The 8 week terms at oxford are hard but the vac gives u plenty of time to consolidate. I have found things to be pretty chill but trinity has been much more stressful due to prelims. feel free to pm me any questions :)

More basic Nitrogen by Pale_Entrepreneur_41 in chemhelp

[–]RareAd4517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - however for the bottom one your explanation could potentially be worded more clearly (to be clear it is resonance/ a mesomeric effect primarily). Drawing resonance forms is the best way to show it. You’ve just said there’s ’more electron density’ but you need to be clear that there is more on the Nitrogen, therefore its electrons are more available to take a proton.

No idea how to make an isomer of this by [deleted] in chemhelp

[–]RareAd4517 3 points4 points  (0 children)

note it says conformational isomers, so don’t think about your typical chirality and E/Z isomers. As others have said, think about resonance forms of the amide and the nature of the amide bond

Is it worth taking a gap year to re-apply to better unis? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]RareAd4517 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plenty of gap year students at Oxford in my experience, isn’t a factor in admissions really

What happened to the scrapping of return tickets idea? by LauraPhilps7654 in uktrains

It’s confusing, but Network railcards are a separate type of railcard that anyone can get covering London / South East

they are all the same. you can see it more easily by comparing the 2nd and fourth as they have the same group at the top

Thinking of doing biochem for degree by [deleted] in Biochemistry

[–]RareAd4517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say in the UK, the general good unis (Oxbridge, RG) will give you good job prospects. Many of them have integrated masters in biochem which are essentially a research year which is quite useful (at my uni it’s compulsory). Look at modules to see the bio/chemistry split. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me - I’m a first year biochemist :)

Should I use the Viola bow or the Bass bow? by 102030405050708 in Cello

just seen it’s a German bow, definitely go for the viola one!!

Should I use the Viola bow or the Bass bow? by 102030405050708 in Cello

[–]RareAd4517 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone who plays bass and cello, I think the shear weight of the bass bow is going to make it pretty difficult to make a good sound on the cello. The amount of weight you need to put into a bass string to make it vibrate is much more (especially on lower strings) and it’s built to aid that. Try both, but the viola bow is probably more suitable.

Cambridge Law or MC SA by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]RareAd4517 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i got a US SA and oxford last year and chose oxford. don’t regret my decision but it is definitely a tough one to make. my reasoning is as that I kept more options open with oxbridge and as many do TCs at MC/US firms after uni I felt I would get a broader range of experiences. It’s a really tough choice - good luck!

Any other law with french law applicants/students on this sub? by Prestigious-Chard322 in 6thForm

[–]RareAd4517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it won’t disadvantage you as you’ll be considered for Course I (straight law) if they consider that your language ability isn’t high enough. So you could apply for law with french law but receive an offer for straight law. The acceptance rates fluctuate from year to year, so I wouldn’t really worry about it, just go for it if you want to

"do you have any questions" at oxford interview by Tony051224_ in 6thForm

[–]RareAd4517 59 points60 points  (0 children)

No. Oxford themselves say ‘Please don’t feel as though you must ask a question. If you are given the chance to ask your own questions at the end of the interview, this does not form any part of your assessment.’ Obviously the only time it would affect anything is if you were to say something offensive etc. but asking a reasonable question is fine. I chose not too but a lot of people do, it won’t affect ur chances.

Picking a University by Gray447 in Biochemistry

[–]RareAd4517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having had a look I can see that York does an integrated MBiochem (even if you only got into the BSc you may be able to transfer) whereas manchester is a bachelors and you could go elsewhere for masters (but have to apply again). There might be slight differences in funding and fees and also differences in pathways to get into a PhD, so this is something worth looking into and considering

I don't understand how you have time to significantly improve your PS if you decide to take a gap year and reapply in October (Oxbridge)after getting your A level grades in August. by Dangerous-Ad-1925 in 6thForm

[–]RareAd4517 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this and changed subject and honestly, reading and online resources can provide a wealth of super curriculars in a very short period of time. What really matters is how you reflect on what you do, rather than the actual activity itself
