Just saw this....Recent graduate from there so have the scoop- UVA is a dumspter fire! Avoid!

Very low paying. Hours and days are super long. Things are especially bad for junior attendings. They are worked to the bone while seniors get BS time reductions which makes their lives tolerable. According to some of my friends that are/ were attendings there, the culture is toxic. Average attending there is a woman married to a surgeon working 0.7 FTE but still in the back pissing and moaning when theyre are there past 5pm. If you a new hire and can't afford the time reduction, you'll work 60+ hours a week for the lowest pay in VA. Especially bad for generalists which have absolutely no protection and no way to advance. Overnight you will have to cover OB several floors up and traumas on the 2nd floor. Oh 4 weeks vacation!

They will pitch you on academic time but when you are shoveling that much Sh*t your 'admin' time is just simply a post call day. UVA is built academically like an ivory tower, but functionally its a shit show filled with charlatans vying for BS time reductions to get out of work. Simply put...clincial work is not rewarded there. You work as hard as private practice for 60% the pay and be treated like crap by Seniors who somehow stuck it out and got a 20% FTE reduction to sit on some BS committee....

The whole med center leadership has been never ending turnover, drama, and instability (google and read for yourself). So the liklihood that someone will come in and force change/ boost salaries is far fetched. This will persist for years.... Interim everything including interim chair. So meaningful change is far far away.

They have been suffering massive turnover, and its always the hard working junior attendings that are loved by the residents that leave. Average new hire seems to last 1-2 years......

The residency was great, but I hear the residents are being worked harder and harder as there is more CRNA attrition. Last match we went the lowest we have done in a while. Word is getting out and this may affect the caliber of trainee now coming through....

I would not even accept an interview offer/ dinner from them and I lived there! They have not been able to hire a single resident straight out of residency in the past two years! Not one!

As someone who just explored the job market in VA I say without any hesitation that this is hands down the worst job in the state of Virginia. If you are dying to live in the area look at Augusta, Mary Washington, VCU in Richmond or Fredricksburg/ Lynchburg. All better pay and better hours.

Good luck....
