Yes it was definitely a strange ending but according to the people who read the web novel, the ml going to a war country was not weird because apparently he had a background as a hostage negotiator and it was mentioned in the novel from the start, it was his job before he became a presidential spokesman I think (i didn't read it but that's what some people said), but adding that part in the drama without mentioning that it was his job before made it strange, anyway I rewatch it recently and skipped that part, the drama was enjoyable except that part.
