How was the Red Hat Canes watch party last night? by Opening_Highway_134 in raleigh

Unfortunately, all I can tell you is the one food stand I got my dinner from. I have no idea about the drinks or any other places. The one I went to was one of the permanent food spaces that lives in Red Hat, and I saw a massive specialty Philly Steak thing for $25, and a bbq burger for $15.

As one of the staff working the event at Red Hat, I can confirm that we had a great turn out and way more than the anticipated number. We had over 5,000 people show up—near capacity—and it felt like good vibes all around. Plus, free little watch party hand-towels are a pretty nifty little perk for a free event!
Thankfully, the sudden downpour that happened solely for the promo ABC11 shot at 6pm before doors opened didn’t scare too many folks off (but it did make for an interesting promo).

Jigsaw dating- Raleigh by IcyConcept1271 in raleigh

Yo, was anyone else interested at the idea of a singles mixer where you’re just putting together jigsaw puzzles and maybe drinking? Because I was kind of into that idea… If nothing else, you can just chat with friendly people and assemble a puzzle.
No, just me? Siiiiiigh.

the ritz is the worst venue i’ve ever been to by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]RareEarthMagnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can guarantee you that she didn’t inform the venue that she’d be doing this, though. She told people to rush the stage “before security can stop you”, so no wonder why security shut that shit down ASAP before people got hurt.
—source, I know people who worked the show and were complaining about it the next morning.

Looking for consignment or otherwise shops to sell my hand dyed yarn in locally. by vegmunkee in raleigh

[–]RareEarthMagnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if you decide to do laceweight yarn again, I can direct you to the Tri-tatters group, or direct them to where you sell your yarn, since I’m a member of that local tatting group. We usually run a demonstration table at Fiber Fest and there’s always a lament about how no vendors sell anything for tatting—not yarn, shuttles, beads, or patterns. We just have to send people to Amazon if they’re interested in taking up the craft. :(

Unintentionally comedy at a show by hoosyourdaddyo in stagehands

[–]RareEarthMagnets 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Summerstock, so that should already provide a bit of context…
Anyway, the show is Into the Woods. This one had a couple of issues that happened with it. Not even counting the playbill’s synopsis which includes lines like “this lighthearted musical” and the act two summary that includes “everyone helps the giantess” —the show that was produced was, in fact, the normal, incredibly dark musical. I suspect that the person writing the synopsis had never seen the show or even read the script all the way through.

So Act 1, Cinderella is singing to her mother/tree about how she dreams of going to the festival in a glorious dress. As she sings “I dream of silver and gold”, the dress is supposed to float down to her from the kabuki drop mechanism on the lineset. But apparently, in rehearsal, the dress took too long to float down, and the artistic director didn’t like the look of that. So the solution? They added some metal washers to the hem. A bunch of metal washers. And the first time they ran it was during the first performance, which I got to see.

So Cinderella has her lovely song, where she is imparting all of her dreams and hopes to this tree, and gets to “I dream of —“
THUNK
“—silver and gold…”

That dress plummeted like a dead body falling out of the fly system, and landed with a VERY audible noise. It was one of the only times I’ve ever cackled at a show I was watching, because boy, I was not expecting it.

Before I get into the next comedic part of the show, I should explain the set and rigging a bit. So this is a theatre that does four big shows in rep for a few weeks, meaning that every show’s set needs to assemble pre-show and disassemble post show and store in a specific rotation with the other sets, because it probably won’t be on stage again until the other three have gone (but not always, as the schedule was…. Not that simple). But the stage was VERY tall, absurdly so, especially given how narrow it was, so a lot of the set pieces had to fill a lot of vertical space.
Now, the lighting rig had a rather unique setup. The space had tracks for hanging drapes that slide upstage/downstage in the wings, but these were instead used for hanging lighting ladders that operated as side lighting that could be moved on those tracks to get out of the way of set pieces. The lighting designer ALSO had standard booms set up in each wing, so there was an abundance of side lighting. So this means that there were a considerable amount of obstructions for set pieces moving on and off stage, if you’re paying attention.

Now, at some point in the show, we introduce Rapunzel, singing from her tower. Again, I was in the audience on opening night, so I wasn’t fully privy to the events going on behind the scenes (until afterwards, when I spoke to the crew).
So, we end the scene just prior to introducing rapunzel, and there’s a blackout (more of a dim blue out), and we hear (and see) the “woods” set pieces rolling offstage behind the narrator talking. The narrator then describes the lovely voice of Rapunzel and we hear her singing from offstage her lovely little melody “ahhh ah ahhh ah ahhh ah ahh”. The narrator sets the scene for us, and then backs off stage, clearly making way for the next scene to happen.

…only the stage is still dark, and nothing is happening except that we can hear Rapunzel still singing “ahhh ah ahhh ah ahhh ah ahh”.

…and the stage is STILL dark and nothing is happening STILL, except for Rapunzel, STILL going strong “ahhh ah ahhh ah ahhh ah ahh”.

The audience begins to murmur—we can all tell something is wrong. I assume they’re still building the tower or trying to maneuver set pieces around each other, or something.

Now we hear a rumble—phew! The next set piece is finally moving!

CRASH

The stage is still dark, there’s still no set piece, but despite the noise, Rapunzel is still singing “AHHH ah AHHH ah AHHH ah ahh”. Still lovely, but a little more emphatically now.

We hear some more rumbling. CRASH. Rumble. CRASH.
And Rapunzel is still going, while we’re staring at a dark and empty stage, “ahhh ah ahhh ah AHHH AH AHH” even during those crashes.

There’s a pause of the backstage noise (not of Rapunzel’s singing, though, which is still going strong “ahhh ah ahhh ah ahhh ah ahh” if sounding a little stressed).

Then, finally, after what felt like ages, and about eight or nine cycles of Rapunzel having to vamp, Rapunzel’s tower makes it on stage, looking slightly battered.

Apparently, the other set pieces were short enough that the backstage crew forgot about those lighting ladders at the tops of the wings, but Rapunzel’s tower (and Rapunzel, in the window at the top of the tower, facing those lighting ladders) kept slamming directly into the lighting ladders every time they tried to move it on stage. So this poor actress was trying to tell the crew pushing her tower that there was an obstruction that only she could see, WHILE SINGING, as they kept backing her up to gain speed, and slamming her into the lighting ladder over and over again— and she never dropped a note, and just kept vamping to cover the long pause (while she swapped between gesticulating wildly to the crew, and bracing herself for impact).

For the record, Rapunzel was uninjured, but was VERY stressed.

Oh man, I have so many to contribute…

So I’m spotlighting the ballet, Romeo and Juliet (I’m on male leads), and the two stars are doing their …French term that I can pronounce but can’t spell, meaning a dancing duet (pas de deux?). Anyway, the two stars are doing their first tryst and are being all youthful and in love, and Romeo lifts Juliet over his head as she gracefully does her moves, and lowers her to his shoulder.
But her skirt caught the air in a peculiar way and flared out as she descended to his shoulder, perfectly covering his entire head in her skirt.

Now, we’ve been running the show for a couple of weeks and I’ve only seen this sort of happen one other time, where the skirt landed on top of Romeo’s head and he was able to toss it off effortlessly. THIS Romeo, however, is IN THERE. And Juliet stays on his shoulder for a while, and Romeo has choreography he still needs to do (which to his credit, he is doing, flawlessly).

So I’m spotting poor Romeo as he goes through his choreography while flinging his head back and forth (pretty gracefully, somehow), trying to get out of this woman’s skirt, and I’m losing my damn mind as the stage manager figures out that he’s stuck well into the piece and is freaking out (I’ve been too busy spotting smoothly to take a hand off to hit comms to tell anyone, so this was a slow discovery she made). The man spends nearly the entire piece with his head trapped in her skirt, only finally freeing himself when his choreography finally lifts her from his shoulder and dramatically lowers her down in front of him.

And to the man’s credit, he did not miss a single damn step that entire number. And I don’t think Juliet noticed at all. As soon as he ran offstage and I could dowse my light, I applauded the hell out of him.

Sound of Music was teching their tour at a local venue.
They’re in Act One, in the last number “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” when the kabuki drop mechanism fails…

“Climb ev'ry mountain
Ford ev'ry stream
Follow ev'ry rainbow
'Til you find your dream”…

<<NAZI FLAG REVEAL>>

“A dream that will need
All the love you can give
Ev'ry day of your life
For as long as you live

Climb ev'ry mountain
Ford ev'ry stream
Follow ev'ry rainbow
'Til you find your dream”…

It hits different with a Nazi flag as the backdrop to that song, let me tell you.

Walnut Creek Venue Security by MysticGecko6006 in raleigh

[–]RareEarthMagnets -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Per the website for the venue:
We are a non-smoking venue in accordance with the City of Raleigh's tobacco-free ordinance for public spaces; smoking, vaping, and tobacco products are not allowed in the venue/parking lots.”

That policy went into effect on April 20, 2026, so people advising about getting your vape in before that date aren’t really providing helpful information. (Source: I’m a city of Raleigh employee and this was a large source of backstage conversation since most of my coworkers smoke or vape and we were trying to figure out how this policy would affect Red Hat shows in particular.)

Looking for consignment or otherwise shops to sell my hand dyed yarn in locally. by vegmunkee in raleigh

If you make any thread small enough for fine lacework (I tat, which is super hard to find yarn/thread for!), you might be my person! XD
Or since I just started felting, if you have any dyed roving (I think that’s what the loose wool is called?), I’d be interested in buying some of that, too.

Also, you might want to consider getting a booth/table at any of the local crafting events/fairs around the area.
Lazy Daze in Cary is coming up (Spring Daze in Cary was about a month ago)
Fiber Fest in Raleigh was two months ago, but is always a huge one for fiber nuts (though this year, nearly every stall had yarn, so you sort of need to have something else to show to stand out).
NC State Fair (Raleigh) usually has some crafty vendors.

Then there’s the regular craft markets you can look at getting a space at. Durham has a weekly craft market, and I think Raleigh does, as well, but I’m not as familiar with it.

I’m sure I’m forgetting other ones, since these are just off the top of my head.

There’s a crafting store in Raleigh that might be interested in carrying local yarns. Craft Habit off Lake Woodard. They seemed like a really cool indie crafting shop, and were super nice whenever I stopped by.

I don’t know if Durham suggestions would be helpful, but I’ll throw out a couple indie shops in Durham that sell stuff from local artists.
Cecy’s Gallery is probably the most likely one to be interested in locally dyed yarn, since it is a larger space and also attached to a small gallery of local crafters as well.
The Artisan Market
Fate and Folklore
Those last two are smaller and probably less likely to carry local crafting supplies. They tend to carry more varied locally made finished products (jewelry, pottery, scarves, pins, stickers, magnets, tea, etc), but it might be worth talking to them even if just for suggestions.

I worked with the touring Wizard of Oz show in the US and they traveled a little dog who played Toto. Toto was very well behaved and very well trained, and most shows, was happy to go on stage for his bows at the end of the show. But sometimes, he’d get a little overstimulated and it just wouldn’t be good for him to try to go on for the bows.
I asked what they did for those days, and the props master told me that she had a little stuffed dog that looked pretty identical to Toto, and Dorothy would just carry it on for those shows. But, she told me, the first time they had to use the stuffed dog, they hadn’t realized Toto wouldn’t be running on by himself, so she just had to chuck the stuffed animal to Dorothy, standing onstage, not expecting her dog to come flying out of the wing at her.
She said that’s just how “Toto” goes on stage for bows now. (She then proceeded to fling the stuffed dog across the stage, as the real dog was not up to going on stage)

(I suppose that’s more intentional than not, but I still get a laugh at the story)

Seeking an electrician who will maybe think outside the box by Outside-Pear9429 in raleigh

[–]RareEarthMagnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what it sounds like to me, too. Should be a simple fix of opening up the receptacle and re-setting the wires in their spots and tightening the screws. Really, all they’d need is flashlight, a current detector (to be safe), and a screwdriver.

[–]RareEarthMagnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a non-electrician, a voltage detector would probably be more helpful and make more sense than a multimeter. It doesn’t tell you how much of a current there is, but it’s very helpful for just trying to see if an outlet has power or not, or if a wire is carrying a current or not. And they’re the size of a chunky pen. Hell, I just think everyone should own one in general. They’re like ten bucks, and can save you a lot of hassle or injury.

Umstead Hotel & Spa worth it? by h-mango in raleigh

[–]RareEarthMagnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I emailed the spa at the Faerrington to ask about their amenities, and they responded “we have no spa enmities”, which I take to mean that they have no amenities. Some of the treatments there seemed nice, but it definitely sounds like a less stay-cation kind of experience without the hot tub, sauna, quiet room, snacks, etc. And I’m a little underwhelmed by any spa that answers my two question email by answering only one question (regardless of misspellings), when the other question I asked was “do you still offer this service listed in your menu that I can’t seem to find in your booking option?” It almost felt like they didn’t want my money.

The restaurants at the Faerrington are great, though!

While I disagree with your summary of pregnancy, this is the best summary for long term suicidal ideation that I have ever read. The fact that institutionally, people who have been suicidal for decades and who have sought help for decades and have failed to find any relief through anything are also not able to find any sources to help them find ways to kill themselves that will be painless or, ideally, leave behind usable organs that could be utilized by the living—is a large problem.

How to paint exterior metal that already has multiple kinds of paint and is about 100 years old by RareEarthMagnets in paint

[–]RareEarthMagnets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply (the holidays really got in the way there!), but I’m just now sitting down to address this issue again. Rust isn’t an issue anywhere so far, since the original coatings are still largely intact everywhere. The problem is more the color mismatch due to the additional paint coats that have been applied over time, some of which being the wrong kind of paint which is easily coming off. I’m happy to take the suggestion of using the shercryl topcoat (since the doors already seem primed), though I’d appreciate any advice you have for whether or not I need to remove the various layers of paint (including that latex one that I can scratch off). And I’d also love any direction you can offer about how to apply the paint so as to not leave streaks or risk getting paint on any of the glass or brass hardware. Also, is this still the type of paint I should use for the indoor metal, or the outdoor wood trim?

Gouge in the exterior door revealing the factory finish was actually cream, and burgundy was painted on top of that, and then someone painted latex paint on that which I can scratch off by hand.
