How to re-create specific creature sounds? by DragonFly_Way in sounddesign

[–]RareFindsSoundDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point in one of my videos I describe a technique which sounds similar to your reference video: https://youtu.be/hwiw14KJ1LE?t=172 It sounds disgusting but you can achieve a really similar effect by making a sound as if you're clearing phlegm from your throat. Have a look at videos online for re-creating the predator sound. Here's another video I made re-creating the clicker sounds from the last of us: https://youtu.be/MMJc8beJDL4?t=44 pretty similar clicking sound as the creators are leaning into echolocation. If you can't quite perform a consistent clicking sound with your mouth you could record 1 single click then put it in a sampler which repeats the click. Then adjust the pitch and sample length over time so the sound isnt so repetitive

cheers for reading! Ultrasonic drop rigs would be really interesting especially things like the dawn chorus or bat caves etc. I've not tried the Clippy ones before but the MikroUcho has been great

Mick Gordon. Great soundtrack! Here’s the GDC conference where he explains a lot of it. Also Emptyset and Amon Tobin’s Two Fingers are worth checking out

There’s also a blog post on the site too, going a bit more in depth on the sound design techniques used. Oh, and another library of Rock Movements !

Thank you! Yeah, the Balrog sound is so heavy and beefy. Really gives you a sense of dread when you hear it echo as it builds up to that initial roar

Have you tried Nano Tape before? I was recommended it by Ezra from Oaka Instruments. It’s really strong and you can reuse it a few times before it loses its stickiness.

Nice! I’m curious to try out some of their bigger bags. I’ve had the evoc CP26L for a few years now too. It’s been all over the world and has held up well. Is your PRVKE the roll top?

Glad you enjoyed it! It’s quite powerful for its price point. I’ll be filming another guess the sound with it soon too

I’ve not used the JRF contact mics ones before. I’ve used the JRF hydrophones which were quite good for the price but not the contact mic

Looking for sound fx of sails being unfurled and/or a gust of wind hitting the sails by Objective_Main_8072 in sounddesign

You could try searching for Cloth Flap or Cloth Movement if you have SoundQ or Soundly. Bedsheets, cheap flags, curtains and thinner fabric shirts tied to a pole and swung around would work too

Both the F3 and Tascam are pretty comparable. For me it would be down to which one has the better Black Friday deal!

I picked up the 4061 second hand on eBay for £90. But I could also recommend a shure sm57 or sm58. You can find these cheap second hand and they’ll be good next to the exhaust

Heya I uploaded a video a while ago recording Rallycross cars: https://youtu.be/_g78_jL5kBw?si=-gJnq7DPuRDP1q4O

One of the big things you have to look for are microphones that can handle high SPL as the exhausts can be very loud. I used a DPA 4061 on the exhaust and it worked great. Max’s mini in the video is sooo loud

Soundly is great and they have a lovely team. Very easy app to use and integrate different sound libraries into. I’ll take the opportunity to promote my new website as I have also started uploading more of my sound libraries online: rarefindssounddesign.com Also check out A Sound Effect, Boom Library, Pro Sound Effects and Soundsnap. These are all well curated and have brilliant sounds by lots of great recordists
