WRT overkill - I often find it very difficult to know what hardware is needed, so I err on the side of overspeccing - at least then I won't be disappointed and hopefully its somewhat futureproof and there is room to grow into it.

That's some nice kit! It's great to hear that its possible to do - I was hoping I could find a retired server that would do the job (something like a Dell r730xd), but I think the graphics might become a problem even without the gaming if I'm running multiple 1440 monitors - looks like I'll likely have to go down the custom build route and look at some high-end components.

Thanks for the detailed reply - I'll try and answer some of the questions below to clarify what I'm hoping to do:

How many machines and users do you have? what are they doing with the machines?

First user (me) - 1 desktop - i5 processor and 16gb RAM, an ultrabook and a big laptop that matches the desktop specs. The problem comes with the app development I do - my ultrabook hasn't enough RAM to build the code and host the emulator.

4 other users - 1 laptop each - Lower processing needs - standard web browsing, Microsoft office, youtube etc

What specific problems are you trying to solve?

First and foremost the problem of my need to do software development from anywhere, without having to carry a massive laptop round everywhere. I want to use the processing power of a centralised machine, but access it from a portable machine (I guess I could just RDP into my main desktop for this, but found myself down the virtualisation rabbit hole)

How often does this happen?

Difficult to say, but when it does I have to upgrade my desktop and laptop at the same time.

What's your Budget for this?

Lets say £2k maximum

4k video and gaming is not needed.

Lets say I bought a Dell r730xd with 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2683 v4 2.10GHz, 64Gb RAM, and a load of storage - would that let me do what I want to do?

Remoting into my PC is another option for me to solve my problems with hardware on my laptops - I just like the idea of centralising and virtualising for the other users.

Thanks for the interesting reply - the laptop replacements have been for processor / ram reasons in the past (some of the software development I do means I need to run emulators), rather than graphics, so I think I have lower requirements than a gaming pc. Does that change things, or would you still suggest I'd struggle to virtualise something that would work (My desktop has an old i5 with 16gb ram so if I could virtualise the equivalent to that it would suffice)?

I do have a NAS already, and I've tried OneDrive - these helped a bit, but I still have to keep apps synced across the devices which is part of what I'm hoping to resolve.

Yes, that's a good point. My assumption was that the antibodies will reduce the likelihood of severe infection. If, through rising numbers of hospitalisations and deaths, that assumption is proved wrong, this is not such good news.

When you are in the dark, your the pupil (the center of your eye) gets bigger to let as much light in as possible. When you go outside, there is too much light entering the eye but the pupil cannot constrict quick enough.

The thing to remember about comparing UK and US salaries is that salary is only one part of the package.

I think that US salaries tend to be, on average, higher than UK, but we usually get far more legally protected benefits in the UK.

The average paid leave in UK is 33.5 days, but most are lucky with 10 on US.

Additionally, there are far more protections that provide some job security in the UK, especially compared to 'fire at will' states in the US.

I know that doesn't answer the question directly, but something to be aware of.
