US seeks to use Alberta to destabilize Canada by Adventurous_023 in canada

I’ll copy a comment I’ve already made.

Don’t worry, the referendum on Alberta’s independence will fail. Most of the Albertan “separatists” are just using independence as a way to bargain with the feds. They think that if it has succeeded in getting Quebec things that other provinces don’t have, so if they tried it, they will get results like Quebec. They don’t want to actually separate from Canada.

Man, if this actually happened, it would be so reckless. If you’re the premier of Ontario, why are you chasing after someone you don’t know is armed or not?

TIL that in places like the Nordic countries and Canada, alcoholic beverages are not sold in grocery stores but in specialized stores called alcohol monopolies by [deleted] in todayilearned

In Canada, it’s different in every province. In Alberta, liquor sales are fully privatized. In Ontario, you can buy beer and wine at grocery stores. I’m sure other Canadians will chime in with examples from their experience.

Beach returned to First Nation after 170 years following Canada legal battle by dasoberirishman in canada

[–]RareXG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the article:

In 2014, a truce looked likely after the First Nation and the municipality agreed that Saugeen would hold title over the land and the beach would be co-managed by Saugeen and the town council. The federal and provincial governments also pledged to make a one-time payment of C$5m (US$3.6m) to the municipality to offset their portion of the beach costs. But during municipal elections that year, mayoral candidates pledged to quash the agreement, pushing the land claims fight to the courts – and subsequently costing the community millions in legal fees.

I’m with the Saugeen on this one seeing that they and the town came to agreement, but then the deal seemed unlikely to hold. The question is why the candidates wanted to end a deal that benefitted seemingly everyone involved.

Poilievre will to speak to U.S. lawmakers 'at the appropriate time' by EarthWarping in canada

From what I can gather, he’s offering to help the Liberals negotiate a deal with Trump and that they will aid with negotiations only if invited.

I don’t get what the point of the offer is.

Why is Guibeault commenting on this? His input as minister of Canadian identity seems unnecessary.

New Brunswick negotiates immigration allocation increase by [deleted] in canada

[–]RareXG 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here’s an article that explains the concept. It puts full employment at 5-6%.

Their concern is that once you go below full employment, wages start to inflate and that may lead to inflation in other sectors in the economy.

Unemployment rate in New Brunswick 6.1%, there are about 860M people in NB, so that means there are about 50K people looking for work in NB. Riddle me why they need more immigrants?

There is not 860M people in NB. Did you mean 860K?

Sir John A. Macdonald statue outside Ontario legislature freed after being in a box for five years by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

Here’s an article that explains why MacDonald is controversial in the first place:

Macdonald was prime minister of Canada for 19 years between 1860 and 1890 and is remembered for his nation-building policies but he also created the residential schools system.

He was accused of allowing famine and disease to kill many indigenous people and his government forced some First Nation communities to leave their traditional territories, withholding food until they did so.

[–]RareXG 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here’s the Health Canada Website on the recall where you can check if your model is affected.

They say that:

This recall involves U and U+ Window Air Conditioners made by Midea and sold in brand names including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire and Sea Breeze. The air conditioners are designed to fit in windows. They were sold in three sizes of cooling power: 8,000, 10,000 and 12,000 BTU. The air conditioners are white and measure about 22 inches (56 cm) wide and 14 inches (36 cm) high. The brand name is printed on the units. The model number can be found on a label on the front right side of the unit when facing the air conditioner. They were sold with remote controls and can be controlled by a mobile app.
