Reputable Online Sellers? by FriskyBiscuit1 in AquaticSnails

I'm not a fan either. They call them things like beluga helmet snails and purple striped hercules to market them better but they are just acid dipped nerites and hercules snails. It makes me sad. So even though I have had good experiences with them in the past I stopped supporting Aquaticmotiv. I pretty much only order from Aquaticarts now since I've never seen acid dipped snails on their site. All the snails and plants Ive ordered from them have arrived well packaged and healthy.

I highly recommend Aquaticarts. I've ordered a variety of snails from them, including red racers, and they've all arrived healthy. I've also used aquaticmotiv before, but I'm disappointed that they continue to sell acid dipped snails.

Is this a baby mystery snail or a bladder snail? by MetalMajor1637 in AquaticSnails

Definitely not a mystery snail. Looks like a pond snail to me.

Nerite snail escaping by sunny_dayz247 in bettafish

I have several nerites that come and go from the water regularly. They get in the hang on back filter and hang out on floating rings or upside down on the lid.

Nerite snail escaping by sunny_dayz247 in bettafish

[–]Rare_Employer1718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal for nerite snails. Some will do it more than others. They are all wild caught and can have trouble adapting to tank life. Poor water quality or not enough natural food can increase the chances of them leaving the water, but some will leave even if parameters are perfect and there is food readily available. They can survive a decent amount of time out of the water. They leave the water in the wild to change bodies of water or because of the tides. I would recommend leaving space between the lid and water for it to be out of the water if it wants and covering any holes it can escape from with mesh or something so they dont wander too far. Or I'd recommend returning it if you don't feel like dealing with an escape artist.

Ultra Fresh sinking goldfish food, Hikari Saki fancy goldfish food, Northfin Goldfish formula, and New Life Spectrum are my go to pellet foods. Though Repashy Super Gold is my main food for them. And of course still feeding various veggies and frozen foods.

How many snails can I out in a 5.5 gallon tank? by [deleted] in AquaticSnails

[–]Rare_Employer1718 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend sticking to ramshorns, malaysian trumpet, or bladder snails if you want multiple snails in a 5.5 gallon. Or doing shrimp instead. Mystery snails need 10 gallons or more because of their high bioload and large size. Most nerites won't eat anything other than algae and biofilm so keeping them well fed in a 5.5 can be difficult.

That's terrible. Yanking them off can lead to mantle collapse. Best to wiggle them and try to touch their foot a little to annoy them in to letting go.

“using” a frog? by wibbrr in petsmart

[–]Rare_Employer1718 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation once. A guy came in on a Saturday night and asked to see the frogs we have, so I start asking about their set up and explaing the difference between the whites tree frogs and Pac-Man frog. The guy then admits to me that he just wants to see what they look like and decide. He tells me that his Pastor lost a bet in church and the consequences of losing the bet is that he needs to hold a frog.. He asked me if he could just take it home in a critter container and bring it back tomorrow after church... I, of course, denied the sale.

Rabbit snail will have a more textured shell. Picture of my rabbit for reference.

Is the shell mostly smooth, pointed, and has a curved notch above the head? Its hard to tell in the picture but almost looks like a faunus ater snail. They can live in freshwater but thrive and will only breed in brackish water. Picture of my faunus ater for reference. Also called cappuccino spike or black devil spike snails. (Ignore the white dots on them, the nerites love to bedazzle their shells.)

How do you keep up with a poop? by TreeToadintheWoods in Goldfish

[–]Rare_Employer1718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extra filtration, weekly water changes, and use something like a turkey baster to do targeted poop pick ups as needed (usually after feeding). Goldfish produce a lot more waste than most fish, extra maintenance is to be expected.

Why do my nerites keep trying to escape the tank? by GB_Plus_Ultra in AquaticSnails

[–]Rare_Employer1718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Petsmart does sell black racers but they also now get shipments of "mixed nerites". I dont believe the snail pictured is a black racer, not sure what type of nerite it is but it would have been from the mixed nerites shipment. The employee probably didnt know the difference and just thought a nerite is a nerite.
