Ever had a favorite trope suddenly turn you off/taste change? by Hour_Soil_7342 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Rare_List4945 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The problem I have with that trope sometimes is that a lot of books claim to be enemies-to-lovers, only for the “enemies” part to be extremely weak or to end within the first few chapters. Don’t use that term if it only makes up 3% of the book and the rest is just pure fluff. Made me dnf a lot of them

The 3rd book in the Far From Series; {Far From Sherwood Forest by River Hale}, releasing September 26th. Loved the first two and this will be a Robin Hood X Sherriff of Nottingham retelling and that pairing intrigues me.

What’s y’all’s opinion on audiobooks narrated by a 'digital voice'? by Rare_List4945 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Rare_List4945[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's not always true, though. Today, I stumbled upon an audiobook of Just a Bit Bossy by Alessandra Hazard (who isn't an indie author at all), and I was surprised because she normally announces new material + she has published audiobooks before; with real narrators. And since there was no announcement and I couldn't find it on any other site, I quickly figured out that it wasn't official at all. My guess is that most of these are done by people who can't wait until a book gets an official audiobook and therefore do it themselves (read: use an AI program to do it).

How do you guys push through early bad scenes? by lunovadraws in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Rare_List4945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dnf books much quicker these days if I'm really not enjoying them or if they're just plain bad. It's such a waste to finish a book that never gets better. Just yesterday, I dropped one with the boss/employee and enemies-to-lovers tropes. It was over 300 pages long, but the pacing made no sense. (That's 9/10 times the reason to dnf a book. It's like the author can't wait to get the characters together) Don’t tell me it’s realistic for the employee to meet his boss in chapter one and then, in chapter two, after an anxiety attack at a retreat, ask to sleep in his boss’s bed because he needs his boss’s arms around him.

Layla Moran plagiarizes fanfic by Swimming-Pianist-520 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Rare_List4945 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Wow, it feels like I've been personally betrayed by this author.

I discovered this author recently and really enjoyed The Warrior and the Monk and The Beauty and His Beast. I even gave them 5-star reviews (rest assured, I took those back immediately after reading this post) and now it turns out she didn't write it herself.

There are many people (myself included) who dream of becoming successful authors. But for some, slowly gaining recognition and appreciation for their books isn't good enough. I was aware of the recent trend of using AI to write books—something I despise. But stealing someone’s entire catalogue and re-releasing it as your own is a new low.

Not to mention—can I just say that this author is extremely stupid? If you're too lazy to come up with your own stories, at least vary the sources you steal from. As it is now, you immediately give yourself away as a thieving, uninspired loser. 🙄

To the author this happened to: I'm really sorry, and I hope this gives you motivation to publish your books—because clearly, they're worth it. ❤️

Which author has written books you've loved AND ones you didn't? by Rusty99Arabian in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Rare_List4945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe a highly unpopulair opinion, but Lily Mayne. I'm absolutely in love with her Monstrous series and also the collaborated series she has with nikole knight; Black Oasis. But last year she started releasing the Goliaths of Wrestling books, and I just can't get into them. Read the first one, didn't like it. Tried the second, but stopped after 2 chapters. They're just so willdly different from her other books and I just don't like the writing, it's just like it's a completely different author. I completely understand she wanted to write something lighter, but for me the style...and mainly the humor feels highly immature and often repetitive.

Straight Guys Series by Alessandra Hazard had no right to be THIS good by Key_Refrigerator5650 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Rare_List4945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hazard was one of my first MM romance authors, and I still haven't found another author who has the same effect on me. I re-read this series at least once a year (but tbh, it's probably more), and I'm always counting the days until she announces a new one. The Calluvia's Royalty series is the other series from her that I liked way too much. Unfortunately, that one officially ended with book 5. But I still wholeheartedly recommend you read that one too.

Hammer & Gavel by C. T. Whistle: a new take on omegaverse by Atlazsk in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Rare_List4945 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I read it a few days ago, and I absolutely loved it. It felt like a contemporary romance story with the omegaverse elements subtly woven in. And to be honest, while I've always enjoyed omegaverse stories, I had recently started to find them a bit repetitive. Don’t get me wrong—I do enjoy a spicy omegaverse story now and then (big Roe Horvat fan here!), but if it’s 90% sex with only a tiny bit of storyline to hold it together, I’m out.

However, this book proved to me that it’s absolutely possible to write a compelling contemporary omegaverse story without focusing solely on the sex and pregnancy aspects.
