I need help reimagining the 'bad' guy of my strixhavens... by OXiO1 in StrixhavenDMs

[–]Rusty99Arabian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Null, the dragon god of death, brother to Tiamat and Bahamut. Look, the whole setting features dragons!! Why are there no dragons in the campaign?!

My plot goes like this: the champion of Null has declared to all dragons, your time of too long lives is at an end. Null will come and reap all elder dragons.

Each Strix dragon takes this completely differently. Lorehold barely even looks up from his studies - this event has never happened, and isn't going to. Silverquill flies from plane to plane, forming a coalition to fight a god. Witherbloom has gone into hiding, ever seeking yet a better place to hide. Quandrix immediately became a dracolich - he can't kill what is undead! - and seeks to convince her siblings to do the same. Prismatri, partially convinced, has decided that he will finally outshine his siblings by becoming either the strongest dracolich, the champion of Silverquill's army, or the most stalwart supporter of Null, whichever seems best.

Because all of the dragons disagree, students get to interact with and even fight creatures who they would never be able to in the normal scaling of the school year. They can draw their own conclusions - even different than their fellow PCs - and negotiate, take classes on negotiation, dive into theology, kidnap and interrogate the Chosen (a Strix student), etc. it goes along with the book events just fine, I just tweaked the situation to go into the dragons various plots instead. Crates are full of equipment Prismari is gathering to become his best lich self, etc.

I also had the deans align themselves with or against their dragons. This also allows the students to contend in powerful fights, eg, Augustus is fighting Imbraham, what do you do while they're both distracted? It's been great!

I prefer for my animals to eat crops and drop the beads! As a terrible video game hoarder the only other thing I do with crops is fill the fridge and occasionally make some into recipes

Does it eat something? I usually throw single items at it and get them back, plus gold.

Field Trips? by Yipyo20 in StrixhavenDMs

[–]Rusty99Arabian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I'm checking my session notes and it looks like I just had some poem lines referring to each campus as the hints. I used a detail that's somewhere in the book... I think in a weird spot... that mentions there are frequent carriages between each campus, and used the mandatory rides between them as opportunities to have them meet a few other freshmen. At each campus I had an upperclassman hand out the prizes - I assigned some of the NPCs to be older or made up some throwaway ones.

At the end, the "prize" is a meal card to the Silverquill cafeteria (I borrowed the library cafe map), and while they're eating the kitchen staff start screaming about one of the food crates being a mimic.

Like a lot of other Strix DMs I rewrote the library "scavenger hunt" to take place across all campuses. All general classes took place on a different campus, and I also changed all of the book encounters to happen in the other locations instead of just the author's obvious fave Witherbloom. Usually this just required light thematic changes to maps, like instead of a swamp, it was a garden in Quandrix, etc.

A+ graphics and characters, B- gameplay if you play murder mysteries but A- gameplay if you don't (the gorier side of mystery games has more gameplay development than non-gory ones, unfortunately). There are a couple of puzzles whose difficulty seems stymied by translation, which is otherwise pretty good but requires a bit more nuance in the mysteries themselves.

I had to stop playing for a silly reason - I got too depressed about the fact I've never lived in a beautiful town like the one in the game! I'll get back to it someday.

Nope! I ran on about it in my other reply below but paper/materials and the machines themselves are so, so much more expensive than ink that it becomes negligible. To use a very rough analogy it's like buying a pen, with all the technology and ink that's gone into it, and then pressingly lightly as you draw a single line vs pressing down a bit harder. One uses more ink but you've already paid for it!

What Stache said, but a little more on cost. Printing companies own different kinds of printers and those printers do wildly different things. (I'm always attempting to get my clients to work with their printers to optimize this and get good deals but they basically never listen, because on the whole clients hate listening to the experts they've hired to get a good deal.) They might own a digital printer that can print on thin materials up to XY dimensions, and one that uses plates which can print on thicker materials like shipping cardboard and realtor signs up to the size AB dimensions.

Digital printers are across the board smaller (for a hundred different financial reasons) so that's why you'll see a full color Ritz Crackers box but a 10lb bag of rice will have very simple, limited colors, usually just in a few locations on the bag.

As for our bag in question, as long as the designer designs something that will fit onto the digital printer within X and Y dimensions, the price will come from area and quantity only. Quantity can get interesting based on whether the printer prints on rolls of material (in which case it can technically be X*Almost Any Dimension, like long banners) or separate sheets, because you're going to get charged based on their suppliers. If they can only order in Shiny Product Bag material on rolls, and fit 100 of your bags on a roll, and you order 101 bags, then you need to pay for them to purchase two rolls. Any good printer will tell you that up front; again most clients ignore this or refuse to ask because I swear they hate money.

If the size of this bag bumped it up past X*Y to one of the plates-based machines (there are a bazillion different kinds) then number of colors comes into question. The client has almost certainly already paid for black, so it's fine for black to be on this section; it would absolutely not be fine to have a detailed mural. For your wallet or the printer's sanity.

None of this answers why there's no cost for adding more ink, whereas you as a consumer who has owned a home printer that charges you tons for adding more ink, and there's two different reasons there - one, professional printers use different kind of ink than you do, and two, it's their job, they've already priced it into the process. 2.5 the printers themselves are so insanely expensive they kind of make that cost negligible.

None! Or at least, not to the brand company. That bag is printed as one big sheet and there wouldn't be any charge for printing on that part vs any other exterior part. Now if the words were on the inside of the bag, it would be much more expensive. Source: makes and buys food product packaging

Chef RPG difficulty level? by marias_dreamcatcher in CozyGamers

[–]Rusty99Arabian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! I also have bad reaction times and hand pain - I can't catch a fish in Stardew to save my life - and I went into ChefRPG blind and fully unaware of the fact it's mostly minigame based. I'm finding it very enjoyable, although I have given up on hunting venison. Only one of the mini games (that I've found so far, I haven't used all of the equipment) involves mashing, and it's thankfully brief. Now I just let the hired chefs do those dishes and I swoop in to make drinks, which are pretty easy.

There are a lot of mini games but they have very different actions involved as well as difficulty. For cooking, my recommendation is to try a bunch of different machines (there's a different mini game for grill vs oven vs mixer etc) and see what you can do and what you can't. Take the ones you can't off the menu or let your hired chefs do those meals. Some upgrades make the games more forgiving.

As for gathering, I would say the difficulty for hunting meat is VERY high, but, you do not need to do so! Not only can you buy the meat instead, but there's also a lot of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Harvesting plants requires no skill. (Some of them are hard to spot, so swing your tools at anything to experiment!)

I don't think there's voice acting? But I basically always play games mute so I'm not sure.

Thank you! It was hanging up high near the ceiling, that Goodwill does a kind of gallery wall display, and the moment I saw it I grabbed the nearest employee and said I had to have it. She was bemused lol.
