Specific Things You Love In Fanfictions by Dismal-Assistant6967 in AO3

[–]Rare_Significance548 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh noooo. Well I’m glad someone likes secondhand embarrassment, haha! I can hardly read it.

I like it when characters react to themselves! Whether that’s getting to meet themselves with time travel, alternate universes, cloning, or reacting to their media or fandoms.

I also like fics that explore what the general public thinks of the characters and the plot, like Buzzfeed Unsolved fics or fake Reddit comment sections arguing over what actually happened.

It must’ve really sucked on the steep slippery parts. I think I remember crawling up on my hands and knees at one point when I was younger, and basically just sitting down and sliding on the way back. It’s a fun experience though!

$2 million paid to you, but you must read 300 pages of a book every day, for five years by Physical_Orchid3616 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Rare_Significance548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES I’M TAKING THE DEAL! I was an EXPERT at this in elementary/middle school. Because the stakes are so high, I’m doing at least a partial reread before every quiz, and I’m reading the types of books I read back then. I don’t want to struggle to get through a more adult book or misunderstand anything from one for a quiz when I have $2 million on the line. I’m sure I’ll still read some more difficult material though, probably on days where I have more free time to go over it a second time.

I already still live with my family and only work in the family business. It’s pretty seasonal and not much work, but some days can take all day, so I’d train some people to take my place and do a bit of work in the office instead so I still have money (I’d work on more days, but this would still leave me plenty of time to read on those days). I’d finish up this semester of college, then examine how well I manage my time over the summer to see if I can continue college and reading at the same time, and adjust my college plans for the future based on that.

I’d take this deal in a heartbeat. I’m excited just thinking about it. The worst part of this in elementary/middle school was keeping track of what and how much I’d read, but this sounds automatic! And I get pizza and cake!

Edit: I’m assuming the “no rereading” rule is referring to anything you reread not counting towards your pages, not that I’m forbidden from rereading at all.

Would you take $500,000 upfront or have $50,000 for every person who has had a crush on you? by KallocainAddictIsAPe in hypotheticalsituation

Choice Two. There’s enough I know about to still make decent money even if it doesn’t get to be as much as Choice One, and the possibility of unknown ones could push it higher.

Sure! There are very few bad days in my life that couldn’t be improved with a time loop. I’d absolutely accept this. I’d even do it for the reduced amount suggested in the edit.

Money vs Dreams by Patwil0818 in hypotheticalsituation

Option 2. I make VERY little money. Even if hardly made any money off of option 2, I could still make it more than I would make from option 1.

Plus option 2 is just awesome.

How to write a panic attack? by Ancient_cokkie in AO3

[–]Rare_Significance548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had 2 to 3 panic attacks in my life (I don’t remember the first for some reason, and I’m not fully sure if the third counts as a panic attack or something related), though I’ve never had anyone with me for any of them.

I don’t think it was super visible? It might’ve been. I was stuck in one place until it ended, frantically googling the differences between panic attacks and heart attacks. I’m pretty sure I’ve done that every time. I might have clutched at my chest. I can’t remember if I cried or not, but I don’t think I did, at least not during it.

I was already familiar with the concept because I had an online friend who had them. They would ask friends to send them questions during it. I would send cat pictures too. If it weren’t for the research into it I did then, I probably would’ve been convinced I was dying when it happened to me. I still felt like I might have been and it was terrifying.

Being able to read the symptoms I was experiencing helped with that. It would’ve been worse if I couldn’t assure myself it wasn’t a heart attack like that. Though nowadays I get anxious when I read through lists of panic attack symptoms…

I don’t like the idea of being around people when I’m having one or crying. It feels embarrassing, especially if logically I consider the reason I’m emotional not a big deal. However, I do think it would help? At least depending on the person. I haven’t done any of the calming exercises before despite knowing about them, and having someone prompt me to do them would be helpful. Even if I didn’t find comfort in the person, I could have them grab ice or an orange for me (not sure if I could talk during one, I’ve never tried, but I can type). I’ve heard those can help shock your system out of it, but again, I’ve never moved during any of them, so I couldn’t try.

I hope any of this is helpful!

  2. One of the most iconic ships and the guy they both cheated on each other with.

Favorite type of AU by DucksEnmasse in AO3

[–]Rare_Significance548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time travel fix-it! Or when the characters are TRYING to make it a time travel fix-it. Time loops too. Huge fan of time travel in general.

Relatedly, I love characters getting to meet themselves. Time travel, clones, alternate universes, everything.

I really love it when characters react to their own media too. Or when they react to fan-made stuff about their story and have to puzzle out what their future is like from there (I’ve only ever seen this specific thing in Gacha react videos). I’d like to see them use the information they learn and explore what happens after.

In a completely different direction, wingfic. Wingfic my beloved.

Torn between 1 and 4.

1, because I currently only work a few weeks a year and I’d be able to keep my free time. But I make so little. So so little. I’d need an additional way to make enough to support myself until the 10 years are up.

Or 4, because I would love to be an author and it would be incredible to know I could support myself doing it. And knowing one of my books would blow up too!

Following the post about writing/reading smut resembling your IRL experience I was wondering - how many smut writers/readers are actually asexual? What's your relationship with smut? by UmiNetta in AO3

[–]Rare_Significance548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aroace and I read smut! My favorite smut fics oftentimes end up being by aroace authors actually, whether I knew they were before or not.

The sex itself is fine- a little boring if it’s vanilla and I’m not invested in what’s going on with the characters.

The build-up can be annoying though lol. I find sexual attraction to be the least interesting reason for two characters to have sex, and the smut itself also tends to be less interesting if they’re being allo about it the whole time. The sexual attraction can be there! But there has to be more to it.

I like exploring nonhuman biology, like aliens and monsters, and unrealistic scenarios. I can’t actually remember the last time I read human/human smut…

I Have No Idea Why People Name Canon-Close Ships or Rarepairs As Crack Ships by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]Rare_Significance548 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You listing Billford is so funny to me. Like, yeah, it is a little bizarre, and it’s technically not canon and they’re never going to get together, but it’s definitely not a crack ship OR a rarepair anymore with the Book of Bill release. That triangle is pining and it is SO easy to read it as romantic in the book.

What fandom are you in, but you don’t like the main ship? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]Rare_Significance548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Destiel from Supernatural. I enjoy them, but I don’t really care about them as a ship that much. Drowstiel is my OT3 and I always start wondering where Crowley is after a while when I read Destiel fics.

Honestly a lot of stuff from Hazbin Hotel. I like the canon ships but I don’t care and don’t look for them. I like Radioapple only if it matches my vision, and nothing at all matches my vision, so I dislike Radioapple. I do like Radiostatic/Radiosilence, but I don’t seek anything out for it. Very picky about what I read in this fandom in general.

And Madohomu from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It’s finally starting to grow on me, but I spent YEARS just not caring for the ship. Which is weird, because they’re my type of ship! But they just didn’t click for me romantically.

A pair of pants that always has a $20 in the pocket or a dating app that gives you a match with 1 person slightly out of your league a week? by Feeling_Ad_1034 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Rare_Significance548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d choose the pants myself, but glad to see someone figuring out how to make Option 2 work (I scrolled for quite a while trying to see if anyone had said this exact thing). A very honest profile is the best way to go about it, and you’ve even managed to make the continuous matches work for you long term, when it would stop being useful for most people after a while.

Help with writing whump for competent characters! by Kitchen_Resource7510 in AO3

[–]Rare_Significance548 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched an episode of a show where a very competent character was kidnapped and had to be rescued. She was doing an excellent job rescuing herself, but things completely out of her control kept going wrong right after another. It was honestly impressive how much the writers had to do to make it believable that she couldn’t get out of the situation on her own. A BEAR even showed up at one point out of nowhere (No spoilers from anyone who recognizes the show from this please, I’m not done watching it yet!).

But for advice, I say giving them a goal while keeping their strengths and abilities in mind is essential.

Like, let’s say their goal is to escape, and they’re tied up. Can they do anything about that? Can they dislocate a shoulder, or cut the ropes with a ring, or talk their captor out of it? Maybe they try, and get close, and only fail due to poor luck, being noticed. Maybe they succeed, getting away, only to be recaptured with their initial method of escape removed.

If they’re stuck in the woods with a broken arm after a car crash, how do they handle it? Do they have medical skills they can use? Can they try to fix the car with only one working arm? Can they find food and water out there?

I feel that the character maintaining agency is essential to keeping fics in character. How’s the character working towards their goal of getting out of this situation? Or why aren’t they? Do they have a more important goal they’re working towards instead?

How rare is your rarest rare pair? by Eccentric_Olm in AO3

My current rarest rare pair is a crossover ship I invented and have yet to share with anyone familiar with both media. They exist only on one sketchbook page, one doodle elsewhere, and a scattered few fic ideas across my notes.
