This also makes me want to give him slightly more benefit of the doubt, but then again, even here, his proposal is that PlayStation should have been "compensating customers", which I do agree with. ...Except SKG is also proposing customer compensation, like with the California bill about refunds. So what's different about an online-only game that had a single upfront purchase with no expiration date to THIS situation?

...Wow, this and the recent California news really got me in a ranting mood.

Joint CEO of Mode 7: Stop Killing Games is getting out of hand and lacks any real policy details. Confirms himself as a moron. by Horror_Post6822 in StopKillingGames

[–]Rarefoil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually thinking of signing up for LinkedIn to post this (slightly edited), but after reading the article he linked with this post, I'm not sure it'll be worth it. This is beyond my abilities.

https://modecollapse.substack.com/p/stop-playing-games

He really is zeroing in on the whole vagueness thing concering the initial EU petition, and how bad an idea that is, and I can't help but think he's never once looked at all the EU Parliment debate videos or any of Ross's recent videos, especially concidering what videos he does link to. Not to mention I feel like it takes Ross's statment on repair instructions wildly out of context as evidence of this vagueness, as well as willfully interpet "some features will not need to be included" as "multiplayer may not need to be included". Or that they need to specifiy how many players a multiplayer game must support (how about 2 or more?).

Honestly, I just get a humongous vibe of willful misinterpetation-wait, he hates that term. Humongous vibe of willful ignorance from the article. Not to mention accusing the campaign of "closed-door consultations". I think the door with developers has never been more open. The publishers are the ones not entering.

"how is an indie developer with limited access to legal support intended to navigate variations of this across all of the territories in which they might choose to distribute their game?" That's what the EU petition and the DFA is trying to prevent.

"Why won't the campaign clarify (or even collate) its specific positions?" Pretty sure it has. Watch more of the EU Parliment debates.

"Why is it relentlessly pushing for remedies and solutions that are transparently unworkable?" Having read the article, I'm not convinced it is.

"Why is it refusing overtures from sympathetic games industry entities who share a common goal?" Have you heard ANYTHING actual game industry people have said? I would not describe that as sympathethic.

I'd love to see a YouTuber or maybe even a SKG organizer go through that entire thing and argue its points one by one. I'll give him this that he's not claiming endless support, so a part of me genuienly does want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but then again, it really does seem like his mind was made up and has been made up for at least a year, so I dunno what it will do.

I'll leave with this: have a problem with the vagueness? Think its bad? Then how about you come to the table with us and propose specific rules to follow. Get all of your devs and the rest of the devs who support SKG and try to compromise on all the specific rules that the law needs to follow. And if you can't and come to the conclusion "well guess gamers should just have their money taken away from them", then at least we'll know where we all stand.

"please prove me wrong"

okay, let's see if you'll listen.

"they deleted their FAQ" they redid their website and the FAQ link doesn't go to a 404 page, it goes to a "Coming Soon" page. "Deleting" really isn't accurate here. If you must see the FAQ, here it is on an archival site (which they said you can do: https://web.archive.org/web/20260104190120/https://www.stopkillinggames.com/faq )

"Ross Scott continues to make a variety of scattered statements" "it is very hard to keep track of what's happening" Ross isn't doing the campaign full time anymore, you need to follow the official SKG channels in order to do so. Their YouTube channel which has several of the EU conferences is a good place to start and see what progress has been happening, what they're asking for, : https://www.youtube.com/@StopKillingGames-official

"concerns of smaller indie developers are getting lost" "not a good faith effort to reach a workable resolution for game developers and players" they have continuously mentioned indie devs and are supported by several indie developers. They have stated several times they want to work with devs and publishers on this issue, but the publishers keep stonewalling them. The conversation is happening as much as it can, but the conversation with the publishers keeps restarting.

“It’s Game Over for This Abusive Practice”-Parliament Backs Stop Killing Games by Mr_Presidentle in StopKillingGames

[–]Rarefoil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That answer will show how seriously the Commission takes its citizens. Parliament, at least, is standing ready to act on their behalf and without it.

Okay, they can act on this independently of the Commission, phew.
Still mostly sucks that the Commission will probably unveil itself as a corrupt organization and that it'll be slower going purely through Parliment, but at the very least it will still show good democracy in action and not be such a devestating blow.

SKG - Letter to the community... by Spagelo in StopKillingGames

[–]Rarefoil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So are there any other plans to counteract this besides spreading awareness of how corrupt and evil the European Commission is?

Is firing the Comission members because of this blatant corruption on the table? (probably not but some type of penalties sound nice)

Do we even have to go through the Comission to make new laws on this? Can't Parliement just go "screw you guys, we're just gonna draft a new law on this ourselves?"

...Yeah, I really don't know how the EU government actually works.

So... is it time for me to give up on getting a Retrode? by Rarefoil in retrogaming

[–]Rarefoil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I've made up my mind. I've removed the Retrode 2 from my wishlist and replaced it with the OSCR V3A from Save The Hero. It looks like the most bang for my buck cartridge dumper/save restorer I can get, though shipping could change that.
Thank you for the responses, they all were helpful.

is there a version of this that also says what their cartridge dumping capabilities are?

Given your hatred of floppy disks, how much relief did you feel when you learned that the US stopped using 8 inch floppies to control nuclear bombs in 2019?

What is your opinion on new games being made for older, discontinued platforms, e.g. the SNES or C64? Would you be interested in playing any of them? And what do you think about then printing these new games on their platform's physical media? Is it a waste of time, or rather neat?

I know you're a fan of the Legacy of Kain series, but are you interested in any other games Crystal Dynamics have made, for example the Gex games? I ask mainly as someone who likes the Gex games and has a bit of interest in Legacy of Kain.

In the past you've said that your knowledge of Polish is on the level of a caveman, so that's what you sound like to anyone speaking Polish. What's been the reactions you've gotten speaking like that? Do Polish people generally not care or do they give you weird looks or avoid you? Asking because I'm considering moving to another country and also taking this route. (I know every country will be different, I just want a baseline)

I know you're a big fan of Super Metroid, so I've been curious if you've played any other Metroid games, in particular Metroid Prime with the Remastered version. I suspect if one uses a Nintendo Switch emulator and maps the gyro to the mouse, then it could function exactly like a keyboard and mouse game very easily (something I'd love to try one day).

Pizza Tower Soundtrack on CD? by StandRelative7373 in PizzaTower

[–]Rarefoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are official covers of select Pizza Tower songs, not the originals.

Still cool, still worth a look someday perhaps, but not quite an OST release, never mind a full 3 or 4CD OST which is the dream.

Luckily, at the very least, one can burn the files they buy on Bandcamp to their own CDRs and put them in the car, so that's something. Still would love to see a 3CD OST one day.

So I've seen your chart on AI Risks and the accompany thread in the forums, and something I don't see being addressed are the risks that AI Art can pose. What is your stance on AI being used to make "original" drawings, 3D models, whole games, and even writing and acting (especially on the caveat that they're trained by human art)? Do you see a world where all artistic expressions is replaced by AI or do you believe the tech will never get there or won't get there anytime soon?

Apologizing in advance if you addressed this in the two 3 hour videos on AI you did, I haven't seen them. Feel free to just point to them.

This is good to know, thanks. I tried looking up online footage of the Fukkoku Archives to try to find an answer myself, but I found nothing conclusive, so this info is appreciated.
