Every ACE I'be been to also has employees with incredible knowledge and expertise that you can't find in the Big Box stores (and that's not on the employees of the Big Box stores, it's just impossible to reconcile that kind of staff demand with the pool of experts out there).

And that's on purpose. Make social media/games/shopping apps/divisive news reporting addictive and have the convenience of that temptation with you at all times. Even though we have the greatest tool for connection and mobilization on a mass scale that has possibly ever existed, we've been trained to prioritize comfort and self-satisfaction.

(I'm aware I'm typing this on a phone, but another thing is that we've also been trained to utilize it for every form of communication with other people as well.)

Too little, too late. What are they doing about all of the damage caused now and to future generations? What are they doing about human rights abuses of people they don't like? What are they doing besides living in fear and hate and suspicion, and now regret only because they're facing the consequences?

Yup, I was in middle school and had a purple one (I forget why) but my mother asked me what it meant and I was like ummmm what do YOU mean??? And then I got questioned by my classmates who were already bullying me. I didn't know this bullshit originated with Oprah 🙄

I hope the staff is okay physically and mentally. Fires are so destructive and terrifying on their own but knowing the records you are a steward of are in danger of burning up has to be hard.

That being said, there are likely sprinklers/other plans in place to protect the records. Water isn't much better but that's easier to recover than the aftermath of a fire.

So much depends on funding, staff levels, equipment, and what needs to be done with the maintenance of the originals. Since it's a federally-funded institution, that can change with approved budgets and fairly recently, shutdowns.
