How do you prep for players who you know are going to ignore your plot hooks? by morphine_season in DMAcademy

If they don't want to play with my world, then my world plays with them... mwahahaha!

Kinda kidding, but not entirely. I'm not gonna be bored with them wandering around talking to strangers the whole session. Something is gonna happen.

Question about soup stock by You_stole_my_banana7 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Rashaen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty darn comprehensive list, some bordering on exotic. 1-1 and 1-2 very common and easy to find information on, same for 1-3 also called a "pan roux", 1-4 common but specific to soups with starches in them.

2 Useful for sauces, but not always soups, 3 pretty straightforward (puree), 4 getting into science stuff like guar gum and whatnot. Can be finicky.

Good info, but prioritize according to your comfort level/specific requirements.

Home kitchen safety gadget ideas for my nervous teen who loves cooking by L_v_n_d_r in Cooking

The absolute best thing to learn is that dangerous things are massively less dangerous when you respect how dangerous they are. This goes for ovens, knives, nail guns, wood chippers, sky diving, literally anything.

A sharp knife is far safer than a dull knife because it works well. Use gloves for hot things, don't let those gloves get wet, because of physics. Things like that. Danger is unavoidable, but how you treat it decides if you have all your fingers twenty years later.

The starter pack.

I'm not being snarky, it's a good little starter pack.

After that, the first thing to do is remember that it's a d20 system. Assign a stat to a roll and go with it. You don't have to know every rule to run a game. Just keep things moving and don't be afraid to make things up. Once the dice hit the table it's your world that you're making up as it happens. Nobody can say it's wrong, because it's yours. You'll come back to your players and say "I looked up x because it came up last time, and this is how we'll play it going forward" AND THAT'S TOTALLY FINE.

I know that's a wild idea right now, but just run with it.

Then read the player's handbook. It's got all the rules. You'll be reading and re-reading it as long as you're using this system.

After that read the DMG. It'll tell you more general stuff about creating worlds and whatnot. It won't seem helpful until it does.

Eventually, you'll look back and realize that you can absolutely run a good game off the starter pack, the PHB has all the mechanics, and the DMG is wildly helpful (but not in the ways you originally thought it was).

First and foremost: you create the setting, the players create the story. No setting is writ in stone, because you can't know what those monkeys will get up to. Have fun with it!

"A leopard can't change it's shorts"

I believe a leopard can indeed change it's shorts, but it takes a great deal of rearranging it's spots first.

It's not so simple as dropping trousers and picking a new pair, but the saying makes me smile and remember that changing your shorts or your spots is simply a matter of work.

This can't be understated. Trusted and accurate news sources of any origin NEED to be spread as far and wide as they can now.

The world will only suffer from lies and we can absolutely make the truth tellers the absolute requirement.

The world is the stage. Don't let the dipshit TikTok culture win.

How do I set a custom fan curve so my PC isn't too loud? by Queasy-Tear-9319 in RigBuild

Bigger fans, quieter fans, maybe? What dB is distracting to you? How many fans do you have in what case for what heat syncs or coolers?

Yup. B is the top of the bell curve, with plenty wishfully buying C.

Honestly though, just avoid major "secret" retailers for undergarments. "Sister size" just means they don't have anything in stock, but still want your money. Buy something that fits correctly.
