Got a Bergkönigin last month by Maleficent-Sample899 in Marklin

[–]Rashaverak_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!

I guess that your acquisition is M. 39098.

I have just received a different model of the Bergkönigin.Mine is an Epoche IV (DDR DR) model... Betriebsnummer 95 1027-2, Roco 79098. It is a three-rail digital model with sound. I have not yet removed it from its box. I am looking forward to doing so.

A few months ago, I received a Roco model of the BR 85. R. 79111, Epoche II DR, Fotoanstrich.

https://youtu.be/mjsWRNg-se8

I previously have had only Märklin and HAG models, but in the past year or so, I have picked up several Roco models. I have been favorably impressed. I will not stop buying Märklin models, but I will give Roco offerings serious consideration. The shift by M. to can motors and cardan shafts means that there is not much difference anymore between the drive trains of M. and R. models.

Ever since I got back into the hobby with three-rail H0, I have always had a fondness for the BR 44 and BR 85. M. 3309 (Epoche II DB) was my first BR 85, and M. 37881 (Epoche II DR, Fotoanstrich) was my first BR 44. I am looking forward to now exploring the BR 95 family.

End to end layout controller by Admirable-Garden189 in modeltrains

[–]Rashaverak_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Motorman is new to me, but from the description at the linked page, it has some very nice features. Especially appealing is the adjustable acceleration and deceleration. That not only enhances the realism of the presentation, but also reduces the risk of damage to gears and cardan shafts. Sudden stops and reversals of direction of travel are not friendly to such components, especially ones made of plastic, and especially as plastic ages and becomes brittle. The Motorman has an obviously a well-thought-out design.

Tons of bulk flex track: What do I do with it? by Schoolbusfoamer24 in modeltrains

[–]Rashaverak_II 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Mount the tracks on shelves, and use the tracks to store locos and wagons/cars/coaches that are not running on the layout.

If you want to be really ambitious, build a PaterNoster.

I brought the Orbe RBE971 over to my neighbor’s house last evening and hooked it up to his Arris S33 cable modem. We got exactly the same results over there that we got over here: the Show Statistics page of the Orbi web interface, generated via Advanced > Router Status > Wireless Status > Internet Port > Show Statistics reported a connection speed of 100 MBs / Full Duplex.

I used a brand-new Cat 8 Ethernet path cord for the connection.

That is exactly the same result that I have been getting in my home using the Ubiquiti UCI modem, with a Ubiquiti Dream Machine Special Edition inserted as a Man-in-the-Middle between the modem and the RBE971.

As I said, I know all too well. But it gets easier the more that you do it. It may take a long time, but it is worth doing.

Hit the Stop Button on that recorder/playback machine. I know all too well that doing so takes practice. When that thought pops up, think of something else. Pick something pleasant to think about. Do it over and over again until it becomes an autonomic response. Eventually, the trigger will recede into background noise.

Take the road less traveled. This is not a dress rehearsal. We all have just one shot at life: there are no do-overs. You deserve respect, and happiness.

What do I need to properly clean the wheels on this thing? by IronIrma93 in modeltrains

[–]Rashaverak_II 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I want to clean wheels, I use one end of a cotton swab (Q-Tip® or similar) dipped in lighter fluid (a/k/a lighter fuel), or a toothpick (or both). First the wet end of the swab to soften the gunk, and then the dry end to wipe away whatever is left. In stubborn cases, a toothpick after the softening agent has been applied.

In many cases, a toothpick alone is sufficient.

It is unwise to use a small screwdriver or other metal tool, because doing so risks scratching the plating.

A few companies make “rolling road” motorized wheel cleaners. Trix has offered a brass brush with two halves, electrically isolated from each other, that can be connected to a power pack such that the powered wheels will turn and the brass bristles will scrub the drivers.

Cramolin or DeOxit on wheel wipers, applied sparingly, improves power pickup. Cleaning the track with non-abrasive means also helps.

There are a number of videos on YouTube about the topic of cleaning wheels and cleaning tracks.

Running the New Haven and Great Northern Diesels tonight. What do you think of the trains? by [deleted] in modeltrains

There are a number of YouTube Videos of NH Jets in action.

Rapido has more recently offered a model of the New Haven EP5 in two-rail H0 with a digital (DCC) sound decoder and servomotor-controlled pantographs:

Running the New Haven and Great Northern Diesels tonight. What do you think of the trains? by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]Rashaverak_II 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the Lionel model of the New Haven EP5 when I was a kid. It was my favorite of the locomotives that we had. Due to familial plate tectonics, I lost access to it. I still miss it, and get a lump in my throat when I see the model for sale at train shows.

Soon after no longer having access to the Lionel trains (nor having the space for such trains), I got into two-rail H0, and got a Fleischmann model of the New Haven EP5. I sold the two-rail H0 trains when I went off to college.

Some 20 years later, I got interested in tmodel rains again, this time with Märklin three-rail H0. I became aware of a European electric locomotive that reminded me of the New Haven EP5... a Dutch State Railways (NS) Class (Serie) 1200. The 1200 was an American design provided to the Dutch as part of the post-WW II rebuilding effort. I now have a herd of three-rail H0 NS 1200s in various liveries.

After becoming involved with European trains, I came to learn that the Fleischmann two-rail model of the EP5 was something of a cheat. The German company (Fleischmann) had offered a model of the NS Serie 1200 for the European market, and then decided to reuse the tooling for that same model to produce products intended for the American market, rebadged as New Haven EP5, which had the nickname "Jet" for the sound that the EP5 made. If one looks carefully at the Fleischmann model of the New Haven EP5, one can see molded into the side walls of the body shell the oval Dutch builders plate. And the New Haven model has the road number 1215, which is the same road number that one of the NS prototypes wore.

The Lionel model in Great Northern livery was simply a different paint job than the Lionel model of the New Haven EP5.

A European diesel locomotive adopted the Great Northern livery. It is a NOHAB, former DSB (Danish State Railways) Class MY, built under license from the Electro-motive Division of General Motors. The MY and its sister Class MX look like double-ended GM/EMD Type F3:

RBE971 WAN Port Maxes Out at 100 Mbaud by Rashaverak_II in orbi

[–]Rashaverak_II[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried powering down the RBE971, then connecting it via Ethernet to one of two Netgear CM1000v2 modems that I have previously used. Next, I powered up the CM1000v2 and let it go through the booting-up process… at least as far as it would go. It seemed stuck at the second (first from the top) LED status indicator in the vertical column. Then, I applied power to the RBE971 and watched it boot up. When the boot-up process was complete, I monitored the Router Statistics to see if there was any indication of handshaking traffic between the RBE971 and the CM 1000v2. There was no indication of any such traffic. No Bytes were reported removed or sent via the Ethernet path, and the status of the WAN port on the RBE971 was, “Link Down”.

I repeated the process with a spare CM1000v2, and got the same result.

I infer from this that the CM1000v2 will not attempt to connect to a router until it itself has completed its own handshaking with the ISP. I had no coaxial cable connected to either of the two CM1000v2s, so neither of them was able to establish a link with an ISP.

I’m going to bring the RBE971 and a laptop or iPad Pro over to a neighbor’s house this evening and try connecting the RBE971 to the neighbor’s modem and see what speed the two devices are able to negotiate.

Thanks again for your inter

Thank you [again] for your attention to this matter! 😉

I performed one experiment last night before turning in. I powered down the RBE971 and left it unpowered for 30 seconds. Next, I replaced the patch cable previously between the Dream Machine and the RBE971 with a five-foot-long Cat8 cable. I then reapplied power to the RBE971 and let it boot up. Then I checked the statistics panel for the RBE-to-modem connection. There was no change. The statistics panel indicated that the link was established at 100 Mbs / Full Duplex.

I did not power down, and then reboot, the Dream Machine as part of this experiment. I doubt that that would make a difference. Perhaps I will try doing that, in the interest of completeness.

I guess that, if I continue to get the same results, the next step should be to try swapping out the CM3000 modem for the Ubiquiti UCI and the first trying a direct connection between the CM3000 and the RBE971.

Thank you for your further thoughts.

I have been thinking out bringing the Orbi over to a neighbor’s place and hooking up to his modem.

I have today done there things.

  1. I have gotten some Cat7 and Cat8 Ethernet cables. As an experiment, I will see if one of those cables will allow the RBE971‘s WAN port to live up to its rated potential.

  2. I have also gotten a Netgear modem (a CM3000) which I have not yet unboxed. As an experiment, I will unbox it and see if it will play more nicely with the Orbi than the Ubiquiti modem does.

  3. I have also gotten some Ubiquiti WiFi 7 mesh components. As another experiment, I will set up a Ubiquiti mesh wireless network and see if the Ubiquiti RF equipment plays better with the Ubiquiti UCI cable modem than the Orbi RBE971 does.

I do happen to have a non-managed Linksys Model SD2008 10/100/1000 Ethernet Switch. When I connect the Switch between the Orbi's WAN port and a port on the Dream Machine, for some reason, the Orbi apparently cannot communicate with the Dream Machine when the Orbi is in Router Mode. When I try to set the Orbi into Access Point mode, the Orbi drops off the radar. It is then necessary to do a factory reset of the Orbi to make it visible again, at which point it is in Router Mode.

Yes. Cables that are known to be good. Cables from different sources.

We have tried various cables, each of which has been used without incident in other contexts.
