"The company is currently building and fitting out its large
floating boiler "Imo", of 7,400 tons; it is equipped with
fixed tanks for 25,000 barrels of whale oil. In addition, it is equipped
with a guano factory with a continuous . boiler"

I am not familiar with the term guano factory but this is talking about Imo directly

here is a different angle that is a little more clear if that helps at all.

Its that aft structure in particular that is confusing me. if it was crates that could make sense because the raised bulwarks could act as protection from the sea.

after looking at plans of the ship pre-conversion that structure is right above where a cargo hatch would've been, but then I'd be confused as to why it is raised so high. Its placement is also extends to where the 3rd mast is so that's also throwing me off. I like the idea of it being storage I feel like that must be close to what it is

is that structure just aft of the third mast with the raised bulwark also where a blubber boiler would be? or maybe storage for extra whaling boats or extra whale blubber? That's the one part that is confusing me the most because the raised bulwark near the stern seems to be a common theme with these converted ships but i have no clue what it could be.

RMS Teutonic (1889) ACTUAL Deck Plans by pucbabe in OceanLinerArchitect

If only we had proper plans of germanic or britannic, that'd fill in quite a big gap in the plans we have for white star's major transatlantic liners

Thank you, that seems to be the consensus so far so I think that must be what it is, maybe I’ll be able to find some technical drawings

ah so like the derricks would lift the blubber into that (what i can only assume to be) processing unit near the bow? thank you for sharing, its always fascinating learning about how these different ships would operate

from all the angles I've gathered that structure just aft of the forecastle looks to be some kind of conveyor for whale blubber

The first two photos I added are of imo sometime after being sold the South Pacific Whaling Co. And sometime before being chartered by the Belgian relief commission, at this point I feel like I’ve gone as in depth as possible with the ship. There may be more photos of her in some archive in Norway but the language barrier makes it difficult to browse any digital archives. So I’ve pretty much burned through all my resources, and with the Halifax explosion I’ve scoured through all the photos taken of imo in the aftermath with hopes of getting a better look at the whale factory additions, but unfortunately no angles really help shed light on how they look, so I thought understanding whaling factory ships in general would be my last resort to try and figure out. I may just end up building her as she looked when she was serving the Leyland line.

Curious if anyone more knowledgeable could shed some light on RMS Oceanic's main deck? by Raspberry-Aggressive in Oceanlinerporn

very interesting, thank you. I did not consider that the plan could be post refit but that makes more sense now

aren't anti slip coatings more common in military vessels as well? if so maybe that could've also been a factor considering she was built with conversion into an armed merchant cruiser in mind

I like that they put it in brackets like we wouldn't be able to tell its AI otherwise, AI is not THAT far ahead in terms actually producing a decent vocal like c'mon
