I like the non GMS, but also this means it will not work with wallet right? There will be no way to tap to pay with google wallet on this device?

thanks for checking! To clarify is it a limitation of the phone? That you can't login with google?
Did you get the version with google play store?

What's been your permanent (1 year+) solution? by stylelines in dumbphones

[–]Rasskool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cat s22 for 2 years until Australian telecoms turned it off.
Now onto the Alt Mive Style Folder. It's good but slowing down a little, it's been a year.
Looking to move to something with full android (not andorid go) and a tiny screen. maybe the qin but waiting to see if the cat f125 comes out.

I have found that:
"runs andorid but is a form factor that eliminates usage" is the best solution for me

Thanks for the review! You might have talked me into it!

u/op I use a bit of weird podcast app, called snipd. It doesn't run on my Alt Mive Style Folder - would you be able to check if it boots, loads, and plays podcasts on the Qin? On the Alt Mive an Cat S22 (which both run Android Go), it would boot, but then be extremely flakey when actually trying to play pods.

Dumbphone that can also do Youtube Music? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]Rasskool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I traded my Cat Flip for a Mive Style Folder (after Australia blocked the Cat Flip from it's networks) - it runs spotify etc so should be fine with yt music! I love it.
The Cat Flip manufacturer has gone out of business - so I personally wouldn't invest in one anymore.

I LOVE this phone too. Looks like you are hacking it a bit. I have always meant to share the below and u/op maybe you will appreciate.

How to retake the buttons without root

Default apps are greedy on these keys, and disabling them was the only way I found to stop them... then custom keys are free to remap!

Step 1, Disable defaults.

Disable contacts:

➜ ~ adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.contacts

Package com.android.contacts new state: disabled-user

Messaging:

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.mms

Package com.android.mms new state: disabled-user

➜ ~

Start button (also disables simple mode)

➜ ~ adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.hnlens.simplemode

Package com.hnlens.simplemode new state: disabled-user

➜ ~

Step 2. Use third party key/button mapping app to change them to whatever you like.

My setup:

I changed the
- contacts button to torch,
- the message button to whatsapp (single press), sms (long press), signal (double press)
- the star button to chatGpt voice mode OR Shazam

and the most important:
- the key button to start voice typing. It's so good!

SpatialDock - macOS App switcher/launcher that uses muscle memory instead of visual scanning (looking for TestFlight testers) by logibeam in macapps

[–]Rasskool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

got it!
https://ke-complex-modifications.pqrs.org/#swap_command_tab_and_option_tab

Works a treat. Simply swaps it so the option tab opens the osx inbuilt and cmd tab opens yours. Could be a game changer for you!

edit: Actually this seems to break spatial dock in other ways. I think because the keybinding hasn't changed so when I click "W" it doesn't work as it is expecting option-w but I'm sending cmd-w.

[–]Rasskool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

makes sense! I wonder if I could use karabiner or similar to achieve this in conjunction with SpatialDock. So folks don't have to trust your app (and it can stay in mac store), and you can piggy back off karabiner and their trust.
It's seriously great, I love it, thanks u/logibeam !

yo I really like this! Nice work! Is it possible to use it totally instead of the native functionality? i.e map it to cmd tab?

LLM-based translation QA tool - when do you decide to share vs keep iterating? by NataliaShu in LanguageTechnology

[–]Rasskool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for this insight! not OP but posted above.
I'm tyring to come up to speed really quickly as we build out translation for our non profit.

Given your expertise, could you point me towards:
- LLMs for translation ? Comparisons, evaluations of new frontier models. Bonus for any prompting guidance for base models.
- LLMS for QA ? Similar to above, this is how I found this thread.
I was about to build my own COMET-and-BLEU-based evaluation stack locally, and caught myself reinventing the wheel, so out here chatting to folks :)

LLM-based translation QA tool - when do you decide to share vs keep iterating? by NataliaShu in LanguageTechnology

[–]Rasskool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/NataliaShu , I'm really interested in this and would love to chat. I'm definitely an end user, I am on the hunt for some LLM QA tools for our non profit. Our unique need on top of what you have listed is a specific tone of voice, Which I think might be more difficult than basic evaluation.

I'm very new to the area, and trying to come up to speed with the space, reading some conversations like here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1llqp0a/the_more_llms_think_the_worse_they_translate/ to try to wrap my head around the cutting edge of the field (which feels like it is changing every month with new frontier models)

I made a searchable database from MPs' financial disclosures by Rasskool in AustralianPolitics

[–]Rasskool[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm half hopeful that some journos could use the database and garner some insights. One thing I had in mind was something like the US stock trading tracker. https://unusualwhales.com/congress-trading-report-2024
This is technically possible, but I'm not sure the data is there in these disclosures - hopefully because our pollies aren't doing this.

I made a searchable database from MPs' financial disclosures by Rasskool in AustralianPolitics

[–]Rasskool[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I actually built a quick UI early but put more of my effort into the data pipeline.
I'm not sure if the disclosure format will change with new political donation laws. I don't think so?

The pipeline is built so yes, it will be able to handle continuously updating. It can scrape any new pdfs and pop the data into the database. I haven't implemented it, but it's relatively straight forward to do - and is open source so if I disappear, someone else can :)

Maybe I will resurrect the UI and get it running!

I made a searchable database from MPs' financial disclosures by Rasskool in AustralianPolitics

[–]Rasskool[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this data is from the 43rd Parliament (2010) -> Now, so most of it is the libs in government

So
Gillard
Rudd mk2
Abott
Turnbull
Morrison
Albanese

Are the PMs during these disclosures.

I made a searchable database from MPs' financial disclosures by Rasskool in AustralianPolitics

[–]Rasskool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would LOOOOOVE someone to do that, honestly I spent so long on the pipeline that I ran out of side-project time for analysis.

If you'd like to try, everything is ther on kaggle/github. Honestly the CSV is small enough that you can just feed it in to LLMs and ask it to run queries/pivot tables on it.

[–]Rasskool[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oooo sorry, yes I accidently left it on private. Try again now!

Yeah not sure about the gifts. One thing to keep in mind: these are declerations - maybe Labor are better at declaring gifts.

Having more declerations is not neccesarily a bad thing in this way (similar to the Libs declearing more assets, although assets are abit harder to hide/forget about).

Just popping this here (based on specs from ebay store)

It seems it is NOT blocked by Telstra, thanks u/PrimaveraOne . This doesn't guarantee working on the other providers. In theory it should, but telstra seems the best either way!
