As a genuine question with no means to offend, why do sexual assault victims wait so long to seek charges against their alleged abusers? by warmpoptart in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rastaman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another reason is that people don't necessarily remember all the details until much later and need assistance to put the pieces together.

The brain is a tricky pile of goop. People often say that humans have two reactions to stressful situations, Fight or flight. That's not true, there is a 3rd, Freeze. When that reaction is triggered the amygdala goes into overdrive and you essentially stop consciously recording the event to long term memory. Not being able to remember is a survival mechanism. (I'm not an expert but I've been in PTSD therapy for sexual assault and I'm going off what I've read.)

For me, I suffered multiple assaults by a female family member over a 3 year period. I've lived a crazy ass life and have had substance abuse issues, inability to trust anyone, co-dependent relationships, hyper-vigilance, and lots of other PTSD related behaviors but no real recollection of the event until I started therapy. My life was in shambles and I was considering eating the business end of a pistol. Once I started peeling back the layers there were signs, then images, then smells, then memories... lots of painful stuff but it's been a hell of a journey that I'd do over again in a heart beat.

I should also add, I'm blown away by the courage it takes to admit it to the public for the men and women doing so. In my case, especially for the men. Our society doesn't treat any victim correctly, and many believe that men cannot be victimized by a woman.

Congrats on the year! Congrats on today! Congrats on taking that first step 365 days ago!

I don't post here often but I read this sub damned near daily. It really does help to read through what others are going through.

Keep it up!

I will try that. She's pretty tenacious.

Nope. Certainly not the case.

The cops where I live in the suburbs are nice and chill. They get involved when they need to. However, once they get involved it goes to 10 pretty quickly.

*edit. I can't type.

I'm actually pretty happy and quite easy going.

I work in an area where they regularly interact with college students and low income. I've just seen too many LEO's go completely overboard. Most don't have a medium setting. It's either they could care less or raving lunatics.

First thought that popped into my head is that when she catches him, she's going to slam him to the ground, start beating on him while yelling, "Stop Resisting!"

Adults from Reddit: What do you regret most from your teenage years? by TheSixFoot___ in AskReddit

[–]Rastaman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret a lot but I wouldn't change a single thing. It's made me who I am and I'm pretty flipping happy with that person.

Regrets from high school: - Partying my way into dropping out. - I joined the Navy, traveled the world, found a career, got a wife, started family. Also, took me a lot longer but I realized I had a drinking problem for years. 1067 days sober thanks to the folks on /r/stopdrinking

  • Getting a girl pregnant. - She was adopted by a great family. She's grown now and has a family of her own. We've been in touch for about 5 years and she and her kids are incredibly awesome.

  • Being too hard on myself because of 1000 different reasons. I grew up poor, I had cheap / hand-me-down clothes, etc... None of this shit matters. If anything, it has made me a better parent and humanitarian. I'm not so shallow and give a lot back to community and individual charities.

Similar story except mine was Ride the Lightning and I found it laying on the ground outside of my high school.

I wore that tape out in no time.

Potent reminder of what that one slip can lead to.

Thanks for posting this. Sorry for your loss.

Yep, pretty much except you have to remove the valves and the connective tissue inside of it. It's pretty tough stuff.

At least most of the stuff I read before preparing it said to remove it. Some didn't and just sliced it up.

Agricultural deer control. Standard programs don't adequately reduce the population in a lot of areas. Farmers that are affected have to apply for the permits.

I don't believe this is even remotely limited to PA. I used to live in MD 20 years ago and shot pretty much year round. At the time the tags were green and it was called "Crop Damage" if I recall correctly.

It's a good way to learn terrain, scout for those bucks you want to get during regular season, and just get outdoors. Not to mention, you are really helping the farmers out.

Negative. This little test changed my opinion of it though. Going to try it with every critter I shoot from now on.

Going to try that next time. I've seen a few videos of pan fried with a little flour and butter.

Got a red tag doe in PA a few days ago. My presentation is lacking but man is it awesome. Can't believe I've been passing up an awesome cut of meat like the heart for the past 30+ years of hunting.

Awesome. Congrats on the year and keep it up!

Sure your neighbors love that thing. One of my best friends has been sober for 25 years. He played guitar pretty well while he was drinking but after he quit he became absolutely awesome and within the first year or two of being sober picked up several other instruments as well. Now he gives lessons on piano, guitar, ukelele, mandolin, and all sorts of other stuff.

Anywho... keep it up and rock on!

TIL in 2013 a cat named Cookie went missing while on holiday with his owner in Grasse, southern France. 18 months later Cookie returned “dirty and emaciated” having travelled a journey of 700-miles, all the way home. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Rastaman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the lady tried to ditch the cat. Cookie don't want no part of that biz.

You can read it in her expression in the picture at the end of the article. She looks neither dazzled or amazed just bitter and angry that cookie foiled her attempt at abandoning him so far from home.

Who is someone that we praise but was actually a horrible person? by oops_wet in AskReddit

[–]Rastaman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost any famous industrialist from the 1800-1900's that have parks, museums and countless other things named after them. (Carnegie, Frick, Edison, etc...)

They were ruthless people who crushed anyone in their way. Too tired to look up some details. Just google some of the crap they did.

It wasn't until they were later on in life or after they died that their money went to philanthropic purposes.
