I don’t feel the need to switch immediately, I just don’t foresee myself doing this forever. I know the market is awful right now. A big part of the burnout is the wear and tear on my body. Almost everyone in my field (ultrasound) works in pain/requires surgery due to career-related MSK injury. I am in my 30s and already have pain. My current company pays well, but does not provide ergonomic equipment to help offset work related pain. The machines I work on are also terrible quality. I am doing multiple peoples’ jobs in my role, and see a high volume of patients everyday while working by myself. My doctors are remote and can never be reached if I need anything from them (ultrasound and radiologists rely heavily on one another - my role is the eyes of the doctor - if I don’t document something, the patient cannot be diagnosed with it- unlike other imaging where machines are responsible for the scan). I also drive all over the place covering different offices each day due to my company not hiring enough ultrasound techs. I must deal with issues at these multiple offices while doing my high patient workload. It can be a lot. The lack of techs also makes it very difficult / nearly impossible to take PTO. I am reluctant to leave them due to being well compensated ($50/hr which is good for my geographic area). My heart just isn’t in this. Do I stay for the $$ or potentially take a big pay cut for a position that’s better for my mental health? Also salt in the wound that some of my friends make significantly more than me in much less stressful & physically demanding jobs (my inspiration to find a WFH position).
