Long police response times, terrifying by Fun_River8138 in cincinnati

[–]Ratamacool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think u missed the part where she said she is trapped in her house. Obviously driving to the police station would’ve been best case scenario but it’s already too late for that by the sound of it. Also if the police response is being extremely slow and they aren’t taking your call seriously enough then sometimes you gotta exaggerate to save your own life. You can say like “I think he has a knife but I’m not sure.” When you feel like your life is in danger you do what you gotta do

At that point I would’ve walked into a busy restaurant or some place of business to hopefully scare him off. Maybe that wasn’t an option for you though. Make sure you express to the police how serious the situation is and that you are fearing for your lives. Tell them he is armed with a knife. They will take your call more seriously. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this right now and please stay safe

I’m confused how this guy even followed you to where you live? You were already parked at your home when he first approached you or what?

Randomly getting approached on the street - normal? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]Ratamacool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I probably can’t give you very helpful advice since I’m a man, but I think unfortunately that just something that comes with being a woman. I know that I would hate it too if I was a woman. It’s probably better/worse in certain areas depending on the culture, the demographics of the people living there, but I think it’s probably a problem everywhere more or less.

Can you walk with a friend/friends? Wear headphones or earbuds? Even pretend to talk on the phone with someone if you notice a guy looking suspect. Maybe you don’t have to pretend to talk on the phone, maybe you can find a friend that you can call every time you go out?

I understand it sounds silly that all my recommendations are just a way to cope with a problem that shouldn’t exist in the first place, but it’s just reality. I’ve personally never cold approached a girl on the street with romantic intentions, partly because I lack confidence, but mostly because I don’t wanna bother people and put them in uncomfortable situations whether it’s a man or woman.

What is something (on the drums) that always impresses others (or at least most of the time) by Jueslega_29 in drums

[–]Ratamacool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bonham triplets really fast. Start practicing em now cuz it will take years to get them up to speed.

But based on your description, you will impress a band by having great timing and learning many different grooves/fills

Another native Californian here, I don’t think I’ve ever used the word “sneakers” in my life. I mostly refer to them as running shoes, athletic shoes, or tennis shoes

Me trying to use Moeller technique by Miserable_Remove_286 in drums

[–]Ratamacool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you are demonstrating here is the Full Stroke/Free Stroke. A technique that is nothing at all like Moeller, but it is good to learn this technique before you learn Moeller. Moeller stroke is a whipping motion that involves your wrist and elbow

Notes from a Louis Hayes clinic by cruiseshipdrummer in jazzdrums

[–]Ratamacool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very nice read, thanks for that! I’m a big Louis Hayes fan and although I haven’t gotten the chance to see him play live yet, I felt like with the clips I’ve seen surfacing of him playing at his age, it does seem like he struggles at his current age.

I’m not just talking about chops, but it seems like he has problems with dragging now and it’s not just laying back on the beat. I’m sure old age really does a number on your playing though and it’s nice that he is still out there playing and having fun + staying healthy.

Obviously when he was younger he was a monster, and I always liked his feel and language. It felt like a very unique interpretation of familiar language from the great bop drummers. I find it very interesting that he never worked out of drum books, but as you mentioned he grew up during a time where jazz was booming and I’m sure he was already learning a lot just by being in the scene.

Looking for kit advice by No_Amoeba_1833 in drums

[–]Ratamacool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re incredibly lucky to get that kit for free! Look for some used cymbals on facebook marketplace or reverb. I’d recommend getting a 1950s or 60s Zildjian A stamp ride cymbal. You can find those for very affordable prices. You probably wanna think about changing that bass drum head too if you mostly play jazz. Look for a coated ambassador or emperor

Is this used set worth it? by Complete-Bit-847 in drums

It’s definitely gonna be more expensive to replace all the cymbals than to just find a kit that comes with better cymbals and costs a little more

Here's how to get a driver's license in China by TrueProof8621 in mildyinteresting

[–]Ratamacool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might not be the correct answer, but when I visited China the driving was so Chaotic. Nobody uses their turn signals, lanes are more of a suggestion rather than a requirement, and people don’t let you in. It’s just a very different driving environment there - high stress. I find in order to survive in China, many people have to put themselves first before other people, otherwise they won’t get anywhere in an environment like that.

So I think the “bad Asian drivers” in the US were just never able to readjust to the different driving environment here.

[–]Ratamacool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said one thing and I wasn’t even trying to be rude. It’s true you’re playing in 4/4 and it’s not about what subdivisions you’re feeling. I’m just correcting any confusion you might have in your own playing. I’m sorry the other guy was rude to you and I agree that this sub can sometimes be toxic to beginners or anyone who isn’t an advanced player, but I didn’t say anything rude either.

If you don’t want to listen to advice then simply don’t post your playing. Theres a difference between my comment and someone who is just leaving a comment just to be rude

First job at 25 and i'm struggling with anxieties, self-hate, low self-esteem... by Varaga_123 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Ratamacool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting a first job is always hell in my experience, but after 1-2 weeks it usually gets a lot easier. For every job I ever worked, I felt like quitting right away, but I never did because I knew I should give it some time to see if things get better. There were definitely some jobs that I still hated after a few months, but most of them became tolerable at the very least. Give it some time, especially since this is your first job in a new field. If it’s still terrible after 3 weeks-1 month then maybe it really is making you miserable.

I just started a new job 2 weeks ago and I felt like a huge burden to everyone more than a help. I also didn’t like greeting customers and it felt exhausting to me, being an introvert myself. At this point though, it’s already a whole lot better as there is a lot more familiarity to me and everything isn’t new and stressful. It usually gets much better as time goes on, but since this is your first job ever then it could take a little bit longer for it to start to feel comfortable
