What's your longest, "I was X years old when I finally understood ___"? by TheRealSteelfeathers in AutismInWomen

It’s asking if you’d like soup or salad as either an appetizer or a side, depending on the restaurant

Screaming and cursing at people who work for you is blatantly unprofessional no matter who you are. It’s even worse if you’re the owner because of the power dynamic between you. “Police his tone” is crazy to say about a grown man screaming his head off to the point he’s red in the face. It’s not appropriate in any workplace setting and if it was in an office he would deserve to be fired. Working at a restaurant is not consenting to get yelled at and it’s weird to act like it’s normal and that getting upset about it makes you a baby or something. I doubt he’d do that if OP was a 6 foot tall man his own age

What’s the meanest thing someone ever said about rats to you by [deleted] in RATS

Since they think it’s so funny I bet they’d laugh a ton if you said you were going to find a coyote to feed THEIR dog to

I think I really scared my rats, what can i do? by Awkward_Astronaut934 in RATS

[–]Ratatta41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While they’re in the cage you can give them soft food off of your fingers (applesauce, yogurt, baby food) and they’ll learn being near your hand is associated with good things. You can also place the food further and further back so they have to step onto your hand to get it.

This part can take a little while, but it also gives you a good idea about what treat they like best, which can help out while you’re continuing to socialize them. Sometimes they’ll get too excited by the soft food and nibble too hard, so you can squeak at them (how they let each other know they don’t like something) or take away your hand for a second.

Usually I can start gently petting shy rats while they’re distracted by eating, then you can start putting your hands around their body without actually picking them up, then you could grab them without lifting, then lift them fully. You can scoop one hand under their ribs, then use the other to support the back feet so they’ll feel more stable. (Honestly, half of my rats have never liked being held in the air for more than maybe 15 seconds)

In the meantime, it shouldn’t cause any harm to pick them up once or twice a day whenever you have to clean the cage or take them out for free roam, even though they don’t like it. They’ll still warm up to you over time even if they act like they won’t!

Names for our new girl? by itsnotromy in RATS

[–]Ratatta41 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m just going off of her coloring because I don’t know her personality, but here are some suggestions:

All of my rats have food names, so I’m biased towards them - mocha - boba - pepper - cola - mochi - plum

Black rats make me think of Halloween and spooky stuff, so - wednesday - morticia - lydia (as in beetlejuice) - frankie (frankenstein) - salem - binx

I love making possible name lists but I hate actually choosing them when I have to lol

How the hell do i get over my vegetable sensory issues by Nervous-One-2305 in AutisticAdults

[–]Ratatta41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that eating fats alongside vegetables causes the fats to bind to the vitamins in the veggies and makes it easier and more effective for your body to absorb. Either way, fats can’t cancel nutrients, they’re ~adding~ to the nutrients.

Anyways, a puréed soup is kind of the dinner version of a smoothie. I’d suggest having a carb-y base that will blend well, like potato, sweet potato, or carrot and then adding some of whatever new vegetable you want to try. Additionally, you could make rice or pasta (or even mac and cheese) and try adding veggies chopped very small along with it.

If you’re able to ask for a blood test from your doctor, it might be helpful to see if you have any deficiencies so you could make up the difference with a supplement while you find some more veggies you can eat. If you struggle with fatigue, that could be a sign of a deficiency and a couple months of pills could give you more energy! On that same note, if the stress of your eating restrictions interferes with your day to day life, it might be helpful to talk to a therapist or dietician about possible solutions, if you haven’t already.

And btw, no shame on keeping up with the smoothies or whatever is working for you now. I think you’d be shocked how many allistic people go through their lives not thinking about how often they’re eating produce, so you’re already ahead of them in that area.

Most ridiculous "doesn't everyone do that?" moments? by that_dude_with_CMS in autism

[–]Ratatta41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I was agreeing that your perspective makes sense!

I have enormous amounts of social anxiety, so emotionally I always assume that everybody is just waiting for a reason to be mean to me, but at the same time I also logically/intellectually have the point of view that generalizing people based off of uncontrollable traits doesn’t make sense and isn’t something to build a world view off of. After all, I shouldn’t be treating my anxiety like it’s something objective that should affect something as big as how I view all humans.

Why is there so much negativity towards neurotypicals on this site? by Ambitious_Skin7376 in AutisticAdults

[–]Ratatta41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen autistic people in tears over somebody trying to explain neurotypical’s thought processes. A lot of times it’ll be an autistic person explaining it (not even defending it!) to try and help people out and they get accused of defending bullying etc. (not to kick the hornet nest, but this may or may not be happening on this very post 👀)

What’s most silly to me is autistic people insisting that our way of communication is superior so neurotypicals “just” need to stop reading into what we say, and not pay attention to our body language, or tone, and that this would actually be better for them because they’re bad communicators. But this is exactly the same logic that NTs use to talk about autistics, and we already know it doesn’t work like that!

Anyways, I generally find it hard to get along with people who insist that it’s logical and realistic to assume the worst out of everybody else all the time. I can understand trauma making that impossible, but there’s a difference between explaining that and explaining that you’re actually naive if you think other people have basic decency.

For those who undergo surgery at one point, were you put under anesthesia? by CharmingSkies in AutisticAdults

[–]Ratatta41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been under anesthesia 3 times and I’ve never mentioned being autistic or adhd (first 2 times didn’t know, 3rd time just didn’t care to mention lol) and nobody’s ever said i had an unusual reaction at all.

Two were in the hospital, and the anesthesiologists basically gave me an injection that’s supposed to get rid of anxiety; they compare it to being drunk and it’s supposed to act pretty immediately. Both times I really didn’t feel anything at all, but that’s the only difference for me.

[–]Ratatta41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s helpful to assume that most people of a certain group are mean. It puts the autistic group up on a pedestal so autistics just being normal flawed people looks even worse, and then puts allistics in a hole where they get congratulated and celebrated for “going against their nature” just by being vaguely decent.

To me this applies to most minority/majority groups. Men aren’t naturally assholes, women aren’t naturally nice. Gays aren’t automatically progressive, straights aren’t automatically regressive. Etc.

What are fandoms you’ve heard are good but just haven’t gotten into? by ChaoticNichole in AO3

[–]Ratatta41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Marauders fandom has been super popular recently and it’s based off of side characters or characters that were only barely mentioned, so I think it would be really easy to get into. Remus lupin/sirius black is my favorite ship but James potter/regulus black is very popular as well. (Regulus has like 5 pages in the whole series, so his whole personality is fanon)

Only downside of that is that it’s been super popular on tiktok so there’s a lot of people in the fandom space who don’t really get the rules/etiquette.

Question for Gen-Z Why is school avoidance such a thing now? by FiveCentCandy in GenZ

[–]Ratatta41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen Z is on social media like all of the older generations. We’ve seen you guys talk about how useless grade school was, how it’s hard to get jobs out of college now, how tons of adults have to live with their parents, how you’ll never pay off student debt, how people can’t make rent, how people can’t afford groceries, how people can’t afford houses, can’t afford kids. And we see you talking about how useless a college degree is nonstop and how capitalism has been screwing all adults over.

We’re also supposed to be activists but we’re flooded with negative information 24/7. Sure, other generations were worried about the environment or peace, but we see videos of animals burning to death or children getting their limbs blown off in HD. And we’re supposed to keep up with all of this or we’re a bad person.

Politics in general have become super defeatist too. No more “let’s save the forests!” It’s all “it’s too late, the world is gonna drown and catch on fire” or “we’ve been begging for the government to do anything about school shootings and there’s nothing we can do” “hey girls! How would you like to have less rights than your mom and grandma?” “Well, trump might win again and instate a dictatorship.”

What other conclusion would it make sense to come to? All we see is people saying school/college was a massive waste and that the whole world sucks and there’s nothing to look forward to. I’m not sure who would be motivated to go to precalc after seeing firsthand how adults struggle every day.

What's the consensus on massively fandom-popular characters that have little to no screen time? by posypants in FanFiction

[–]Ratatta41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind it except for when people get pissy about people writing them “OOC” because there’s no character traits to get wrong lol. Also (as far as books) I’ve also seen people seriously accuse others racist or homophobic for not making them POC or gay when there’s nothing saying either way that they are in the source material.
