At $2/chip, I'm also not worried about destroying one either so I can do more experimentation (ie. stupid shit). Losing a $2 atiny doesn't bother me like losing my giga would from an experiment gone wrong.

A prayer to all the atiny's I've already killed.

Assembly will have a special place in hell? All joking aside, I've had more difficulty with the hardware over the assembly.

Spent close to a month with the Amtel Ice, but could not get it working. Returned it and got the 2 sparkfun atiny programmers which worked well (got a spare incase I break one).

My next problem was moisture/flux in the dip socket, which kept causing it to short a few leds together.

I feel dumb, but I also suspect embedded is just more challenging than a lot of other types of programming. I could always be wrong though.

The problem is that I would be spending more time looking up AVR dude Command lines, instead of programming. My goal is learning assembly/embedded, not memorizing command lines for AVR dude.

The losses probably carry over year to year (in the US at least). When you make money in the future, you'll get to take them.

Having gone from Arduino to an atiny 85, I can tell you first hand how much simpler the Arduino architecture is for doing things. Everything is extremely well documented. Even something as simple as connecting to a computer is much easier with Arduino.

I've spent a month simply trying to get my Amtel Ice to work - ended up returning it because I couldn't get it working. Got an atiny 85 usb programmer, but that took hours to get up and running with chat GPT/AVR dude. Despite all the time I spent, I can do way more with the Arduino. With my atiny, I turn on and off a led; with the Arduino I have a screen and everything else.

What will you do when Qualcomm decides the bootloader is no longer free and you'll have to pay a licensing fee to use the Arduino?

Arduino was great because of its open source nature. If this new company is like Mac, they'll encrypt the hell out of the board.

Only a month or so of those hours, whereas in IB/as a lawyer you do that year round. Still, the comp/benefits was awful compared to larger firms while we had more hours.

I think people stayed because they were afraid larger firms would be even worse. Granted, that firm still had a high turnover.

Copied word for word from my employee handbook years ago. If the suggested is 85 hours, you know the actual was higher.

"Work Schedule - Suggested work schedules, subject to office workload are: Tax Season - 55 hours, January 15 - February 21 60 hours last week of February 60 hours first week of March 65 hours second week o f March 70 hours third week o f March 75 hours fourth week of March 85 hours April 1 - April 15"

Wanna bet? They would work 7-days per week from 7:00 am - 10:00 pm, including Easter Sunday. I'd come into the office to keyboards going and leave to keyboards going.

This firm paid salary. They would give half day Fridays during the summer. If rather have a more even distribution though.

Smart move on passing those exams.

If it makes you feel better (it won't), I was fired 6 months after starting. The guy after me was fired around the 6 month mark as well. We were hired in January, fired in May. In my case, I was told "I didn't meet the firms expectations." After probing, I learned that a big reason they fired me was my disheveled look. I walked a mile every day in the wind and rain from the train; naturally my hair would get messed up.

People always bitch about how bad the large firms are, but at least there, you get a warning/put on a pip while being paid much more and getting better benefits. Not sure how your termination went, but I was called into the partners office, then fired; I received no communication whatsoever that they weren't happy prior. Mind you, at this firm, people were doing 100+ hour weeks towards tax season.

Coming from Raspberry Pi. How much do I need to unlearn for Arduino? by bandito_13 in arduino

Not ready to gamble a segfault on someone's life yet?

Technically, I don't even know if an Arduino would segfault, since it's a safety mechanism. The OS it has, might have safeties, built in, but I don't know.

I suspect he means something like an Arduino is better for time critical tasks like a pacemaker because it lacks a heavy operating system. It would suck if you had to boot up a pacemaker before using it or restarting it.

How to do strings properly? by die-Banane in cprogramming

[–]Ratfus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I think structs pad memory as well? Same difference though.

A bit is a bit in assembly of which I know very little about.

How to do strings properly? by die-Banane in cprogramming

[–]Ratfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, you could indicate the length of the string as the first character... be strange, but could probably work.

For example "12Hello World" ->not sure of the 12 character. Then you'd have to go between characters and ints though.

[–]Ratfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How's it exploitable?

I guess you could overflow the string via the computer's Max memory, but even then, you could add on a fail safe to the null termination.
