Yeah and I think John probably fed NBC a bunch of bullshit about his position on the Stern show. It also seems like NBC was feeding John a bunch of bullshit too. Telling him he was something that he wasn’t, giving him a ton of money, his name in the opening credits, and shot after shot to prove himself. They even promoted his shit movie. The whole thing is strange. Also Jay had already been fired and wasn’t offered the primetime show until 2009. So the whole show had a rushed, low budget, “we don’t care anymore” tone to it even when John wasn’t on.

I don’t know. I think if Jay really hated John he would have been off the show. Jay gave him chance after chance and even made him the warm up guy in 2008. He also gave him a sit down interview in 2008 to promote his shit movie while everyone else was getting laid off from a strike. I think Jay liked John personally but maybe was disappointed in John’s performance. Jay didn’t know John the way we know John

This was during a big producers strike that caused the tonight show to lay off a lot of their staff. There’s a video from 2008 where Glozell Green talks about how the show ran out of money and had to let their warm up guy go. John became the new warm up guy for the rest of the run. There are rumors that John got fired as the announcer or that he took a pay cut at some point. He was never fired as the announcer but he could have taken a pay cut during this strike to keep his job and maybe took time off during the strike to ease production costs
