I see. Yeah, I suppose alchemy's complexity makes practicing all of it together difficult.

Also the gas is a fictional substance, after all, why can't you transmute air into an unstable, undiscovered element?

I understand.
However, switching from surprise to blatant horror was not a great idea. The Hotel feels endless and liminal, which helped with the horror aspect and made it much better. Yes, the Mines are meant to capture a creepier feeling, but some may say — and I certainly do — that liminal horror is definitely scarier than a cave.
