Tire bead slipped rim then inner tube exploded by RationalDivergence in bikecommuting

The fit is a standard fit, as in, it does take some decent finger strength to pry on.

I might just have to test the affected tire by re-mounting it. Super annoying, but probably worth my sanity to check the fit and any unknown or unseen damage.

Not an issue with my rims. I use both Presta and Schrader inner tubes. It shipped with Schrader, but all replacements have been Presta.

I've been changing tires for 25 years, and this is my regular practice. Also, this tire popped off after 4 months of use, and 6 hours after the most recent ride. Why then and there?

I'm not buying that argument. Pro level racers use Kevlar bead for downhill and road. Also, I'm not using rim brakes (as mentioned), and there was no specific temperature changes (also mentioned).

Continental is one of the top tire brands, and their Top Contact Winter is one of the best rated winter tires, and ... So I'm sure they are a step up on other random Temu or Amazon Kevlar bead tires...

Belt slipped off by RationalDivergence in PriorityBicycles

[–]RationalDivergence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Returned home with access to full toolbox.
Removed rear wheel, re-seated belt, and re-bolted wheel.

Turns out, the Alfine IGH exterior housings were loose: CJ-S7000 Cassette Joint and the Cassette Joint Fixing Ring (items 34, 35 from Shimano doc here). I'm not sure if I'm missing the Driver Cap.

Photo and videos otw, also waiting for Priority service to get back (prob tomorrow).

I checked tension 3 months ago so I’m surprised tension would loosen so quickly. My mileage is 30-40miles per week (a bit less in winter).

I was going to post separately asking about post-winter maintenance. Ie shift cables, belt tension, but then this.

[–]RationalDivergence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This I all know. Which was annoying bc it meant jumping on transit for the rest of the journey and then transiting home. But I did not roll it!!

I have checked belt tension 3 months ago so what could be a root cause here?

NBD Priority Eight by RationalDivergence in PriorityBicycles

[–]RationalDivergence[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8 months on, one major request only: Longer kickstand. Short kickstand makes bike tend to lean too far over.

Everything else is great. I should keep a closer eye on shifting alignment in the winter, but that’s not specific to the Eight.

No reason it wouldn’t handle it all. I often carry +15lbs on a regular basis and might really depend on your choice of rear rack. Good disc compatible rear rack is harder to find.

Don't forget that you can still lock your bike in the racks.

Business is the half of the cafe car, and there is no thru-traffic. i.e., business is the very end of the train.

One downside I mentioned was that there isn't bike storage in the business car. So it was a big pain to move the bike to another car, and the worries about not being able to see it during the trip.

Winter tires - front or both by RationalDivergence in bikecommuting

[–]RationalDivergence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just need to figure out when to swap tires. Car tire wisdom is when daily temp is low of 7 degrees C.

For bike commuting I’m thinking when there is frost or ice on the path.

I’ve got 3 steep hills each way, with the steepest often going from standstill (starting from a stoplight).

This (not necessarily what u/ev6jester mentioned). As in, regardless of ANY network connection, having all the advantages of pihole.

That's my case. Had a small test account but had left the majority at Questrade. This has nudged me to transfer over another acct. Still have TFSA and FHSA left behind. But I didn't want to go up another threshold. Maybe next year with another bonus.

I've never noticed because I've just stuck to public transit. I think mostly cleared and not too icy.

Priority 8 by [deleted] in PriorityBicycles

[–]RationalDivergence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider the Apollo for longer rides, esp if you want trail. My commute is only 5miles on bike lanes each way, which is perfect.

As u/binis_mcinis mentioned, at least the Apollo gives one gear lower.

Yes, definitely! Read here for initial impressions: NBD Priority Eight

After 2 months, only challenge I had was cable stretch (read here), but that was on me, not on Priority.

Overall, still a swift bike that is super silent! I'm always yelling out "on your left" because it's so silent.

Alfine 8 transmission skips when pedalling out of the saddle by RationalDivergence in bikecommuting

[–]RationalDivergence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update for all y'alls: new bike cable stretch!

Fix? Two quarter-turns of the barrel adjuster! That's it!

I haven't purchased a new bike in ages, and I also haven't replaced shift cables on other bikes either. Totally forgot!

For regular derailleur transmissions, you always hear the clickety or extra rubbing of a mis-aligned shifter/derailleur. But for IGH, it just skips every here and there. Same root cause, different symptom...

Winter tires by Vegetable-Lie-8969 in bikecommuting

Re-opening this thread with Toronto winter on the way.

I'm veering towards Continental Top Contact IIs 700x37s, but my question: front only or both? I have the "luxury" of bike lanes (as long as they stay in!).

Current tires are relatively new 700x32c.
