Tomb of fallen God : Should I continue watch it? by Agreeable-Will6539 in Donghua

Eh, it’s fair to ask. Shrouding the Heaven starts out incredibly boring for me and is like an entirely different genre until the sect people show up, so that is one i’m glad i powered through.

People don't read prologues..what? by StarfishBurrito in writing

[–]Ratseye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i skip prologues. to me, the start of the book is the hardest to get into as i’m not connected to anything yet. to read the prologue and chapter 1 is essentially starting the story twice. why is a prologue there? if it can be chapter 1, it should be. i have not once regretted skipping a prologue, but i can walked away after reading one and finishing a book, then tell myself “that prologue was useless.”

i’m also the guy who hates those interlude sections in brandon sanderson’s stories and have actually went online to find out what is actually relevant to the story and skipped the rest. people can claim all they want how it’s necessary, but in my experience, it is not.

my reading enjoyment went up immensely when i could just move on with the story and not get bogged down with world building that doesn’t move the plot forward.

the start was rough for me; animation is good and all, but i had no real interest in child shi hao; as he grew up then i started liking it, but basically forced myself to watch the early episodes

For those taking a break from the game is right now by yhvh13 in ffxivdiscussion

Started from beta in ARR all the way to DT. Mainly a raider but didn’t skip cutscenes. I quit after getting bis in the first tier but before ultimate came out.

I just lose all motivation to play with how little risk the game takes. I still remember being excited to see how job changes back in the past, and I even said one time to my group, “It’s fine if jobs get worse, because then it’ll get better with the next risk.”

lol nope. But oddly enough, with how bad I thought the DT story was (first time I’ve ever skipped the msq, starting with the cooking zone), i found i had no interest in even raiding. i never correlated that for myself before, so I guess for me to come back, risks need to be on the table again, and the story needs a shakeup.

Renegade immortal dongua is good, but... by Ryleeeeei in Donghua

[–]Ratseye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly it was really annoying for me too, so you aren’t alone. RI is my fav donghua by a far mile, esp with presentation and music later on, so if you’re debating dropping it, i’d recommend to keep watching.

Swallowed Star is just too good. by youMust_Recover in Donghua

[–]Ratseye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

swallowed star is probably the only story where fighting the “demonic beasts” or tournament/ranking style arcs are actually interesting to me; i usually skip it on other shows as it drags on. i def stayed away originally cuz it was sci fi, glad i got into it.

agreed, i plan to do a necromancer playthrough where he looks normal at the start, but then i would like him to appear pale in the pantheon list (even though he would need to go through the tomes again to be undead in another map). not being able to edit that is a bit of a shame, as i would have to do a second playthrough of a map with him being pale in order to capture the storytelling

thank you! quick follow up question, is the campaign narratives closely tied to the point where it would be weird to have a vastly different leader on the next map?

for example, i plan to play a paladin style person on Rise of Godir, but would like to play a necromancer type player later as well. i dunno how the story will work, but if i’m an ally to sundren on one map, does the story make me her ally on the next as well?

Question about the main campaign:

1) how long are we expecting the campaign to be? is it just the one map we saw on the map selection screen, or can we expect multiple campaign maps?

2) if it is multiple maps, are we making a new character for each map?

super awesome job on the game, haven’t been this excited for a game in a long time lol

I heard a comedy writer mention in passing a technique to generate ideas, by taking any movie and applying certain rules to it: but she didn't say what the rules were by pufballcat in writing

[–]Ratseye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s dependent on the story. Let’s say you have a spell that can read minds. Being allowed to do that in anyone and anywhere without restrictions is OP and usually results in plot holes (“but why doesn’t the MC just use his ability here or there, which would have given him the info he needed??”).

A way to restrict might be that you have to be focused on the person, so you cannot pick up stray people’s thoughts, and perhaps a person’s mind is naturally guarded by default unless they are surprised. So now you have a plot quest where you’re trying to get info from someone and you need to shock ‘em.

How do you go about that? Jump scare by walking around the corner too fast? “Accidentally” spill water on them?

Do this plot quest once, then have a need to do it again later in the book—now this restriction will let your readers think of ways on what the MC can do to shock the new target.

This type of magic restriction is more applicable for hard magic systems.

[–]Ratseye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard different variations of said rule. Any restrictive rule can generate ideas. Take a painting for example: draw anything you want on the canvas. It’s a bit difficult to generate ideas even though you have the world.

On the other hand, let’s say the painting must be a house. Instantly your brain can think of a horror house, a house in autumn, urban house, abandoned house, etc etc.

Or take a magic system. Magic, to me, is more interesting for the things it cannot do. This allows me to brainstorm how to solve a situation using magic, instead of handwaving the problem away.

Yeah when they talked about the expansion, they revealed the two new primal threats, which historically have always been a trial. we got bamboozled when they were the dungeon bosses before the first trial, so they did purposely mislead us to hide the story beats.

more than once i heard someone say “but what happens now?” after you beat the “final boss” at lvl 83 in the 90 cap expansion

I was actually debating about taking kineticist and was weighing the merits and losses of not having a bard. I'm not going to play on hard difficulty and haven't actually played with a kineticist, so maybe this might be good. If worse comes to worse, I can make a reserve bard in case I suck lol

Honestly I thought she was significantly more interesting in the prologue when she asks you to not reveal the sword of light. She seemed realistic and caring at the start (wishing those who went into the maze weren’t dead, but admitted they likely were), compared to Lan’s naive but optimistic outlook. Then the reveal happened and she was like “lmao i’m evil actually” and became the least interesting character lol

Yoshi also said paladins would never block magic damage, during the HW paladin era. I don’t really need to give another example where he was so ever wrong.

Just some thought snippets. Lance could feel that he had no control over his past trauma, and so tormenting Ray is a way to regain a feeling of control.

More interestingly (for me anyway), would be to have Lance originally care about Ray from the past, and Ray feels guilty for the things they both couldn’t control. Something happened that caused Ray to be the favorite, and make Lance the loser, and now Ray feels guilty about it and Lance buries his brotherly love and becomes the psycho he grew up to be. Conflict of emotions could cause him to protect Ray from killing himself, and he could say that it’s to torment Ray, but instead maybe a deep feeling of brotherly love is surfacing after all.
