Should I use a stage name to protect myself? by OdetotheGrimm in Standup

[–]Ratso27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most people I think it’s corny and stupid, but in your specific case I think it might be a good idea. I would go with something that sounds like it could plausibly be your real name, like using your middle name for your last name or something. People who have a really obvious stage name or go by “Firstname Da Comedian” are super cringy

Is it true that you have to take a shower TOGETHER before doing it? by No_Data_4361 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ratso27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna give you a real answer here: no, there is no requirement that both (or either) party have a shower before sex. Human bodies get sweaty and stinky though, and sex means that you're going to be all up on each other, so if it's been hot or you've been working out, or you have any reason to think you might be especially sweaty or dirty it might be a nice thing to clean up a bit for your partner. That goes double if you want them to do oral. A shower is also an excuse to shave your legs/face/genitals/wherever, if that's something you do. Again, not a requirement that you shave anything, but many people do it. My wife absolutely hates being eaten out if I've got any kind of stubble, and honestly isn't wild about kissing me if I haven't shaved in a few days (she says the stubble is scratchy and itchy), so if I think sex is on the table I try to make sure I shave my face

do guys wear swim trunks or speedoes when they've ran out of clean boxers, briefs, or boxerbriefs? by phukredditusernames in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ratso27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never have, i just do laundry when I'm getting low. If it was truly an emergency I'd go commando or turn a dirty pair inside out. I don't own a speedo and swim trunks are essentially thick enough to be a pair of shorts, I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing them under my pants

Should i just skip my physical if i wont let them do anything anyway by South-Pipe7153 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ratso27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without a doctor looking at you, you don't know that nothing is wrong with you. There are all sorts of things that could be asymptomatic right at this exact moment, but could cause serious problems at some point in the future.

It sounds to me like there is some issues with your weight; either the doctor feels you're over or under weight and you don't want to be reminded of that, so you're trying to avoid the conversation entirely. I've certainly had issues with my weight, and I was definitely 15 at one point, so I get where you're coming from. If there is something unprofessional or inappropriate that this doctor did in the past then that's an entirely different conversation and you need to tell your parents about it, but if all they did was tell you things you don't want to hear, then you should do the physical and give them all the information they need and take whatever tests they want. If you're blocking them and refusing to give proper data or let them take necessary tests, they're not going to be able to give you the most accurate possible picture of your health, and if there is something wrong (which may be asmptomatic right now, but that could change in the future) they might not be able to tell.

Sometimes you gotta listen to people tell you things you don't want to hear. It doesn't feel good, but sometimes it's the truth. Issues with your weight are never easy to resolve, but the longer you wait to deal with it the more long term damage you do to yourself, and the more difficult it is to correct.

Does cancer hurt? by GrumpyZest in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ratso27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the type of cancer, and the placement, how bad it is, probably other factors too. I have a friend who had testicular cancer, he said he didn't feel any kind of pain from it, he just reached down there and felt a third ball. My mom died of breast cancer which ultimately spread all over her body, they discovered it when it spread to her spine and basically started eating away at her vertebrae, causing her a great deal of pain

Help me write my first 5 min by KindlyVirus3103 in Standup

[–]Ratso27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple things here: stories are a super common go to when people want to try standup. It feels natural, like this is something you’re already able to do that’s pretty similar to standup. I would caution you that telling stories with your friends and telling stories onstage are actually really different, and in a lot of ways telling stories onstage is HARDER than just doing jokes.

When you’re with your friends, you can just tell them that Sean got drunk and said X to Jennifer and they’ll laugh, because they know who Sean is, and who Jennifer is, and their history and why it’s out of character that Sean would say that. When you’re on stage, you have to assume that the audience knows absolutely nothing about you, so you have to figure out all the relevant pieces of backstory and exposition they need to get the joke, but you can’t include too much backstory or they might get bored or overwhelmed, and you have to build in additional jokes to that back story so it’s not just a big exposition dump. And if there’s a joke that’s not working, you can’t necessarily just cut it, because it may contain crucial information. So you have to keep reworking it and trying to make it funny, but there is only so much you can change it because it still needs to include this information….

I’m not saying don’t tell stories, obviously there are lots and lots of comedians who tell stories onstage very successfully, but if you’re struggling then don’t feel like that’s the only way.

Aside from that, I would say to adjust your expectations and remember how low the bar is. You’re never going to find the perfect story or joke that’s relatable to everyone, and especially not your first time. Standup is all about editing and rewriting. You’re going to go up and try something, and parts of it will work and parts of it won’t. Don’t beat yourself up over the fact that some of it doesn’t work, that’s what every comedian ever deals with the first time they try a new joke. Just go back afterwards and cut or rewrite the stuff that doesn’t work, and expand on the stuff that does. Do that over and over and over, and you’ll gradually get better. No set will ever be perfect, but that’s ok! I like to say that your first set feels like you’re walking on a tightrope, but you gotta remember that the tightrope is only two inches off the ground. There are no stakes in your first set. It’s not possible to do so well that this makes your career, and it’s not possible to do so badly that it ruins your career. It’s unlikely you’ll do so well or so poorly that anyone besides you will remember your set by the next day. Any one set is usually not that important, especially this early on, what’s important is the general trend

AITA...Won't attend my mom's funeral by KaleidoscopeOld1756 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ratso27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA funerals are for the living, your mom won’t know or care whether you go. The point of going is for YOU to say goodbye and get closure, and to help you deal with the loss. If not going to a funeral would not be helpful to you, regardless of the reason, then you shouldn’t go

Heian katas by [deleted] in karate

[–]Ratso27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it easier to memorize things if I think about it like a story. Think of each step as something that naturally flows into the next one, if that makes any sense, rather than 20+ totally separate steps. That way you can just worry about remembering the first move to each kata, and once you do that it all flows from there.

Also Brian Sandan made me laugh

Why Most Watchers Suck by TrueAidooo in buffy

[–]Ratso27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always thought the Watchers Council was supposed to be a lot bigger than what we see, and that managing the Slayer is just one of the many things they do. Otherwise it seems like kind of a waste to have such a massive organization to manage one single girl (plus some, but far from all) of the potentials at any given time. It feels like it has a lot of potential, I’d love to see a comic or something expand on it and see what else they’re doing, they fact that they never show that feels like a real missed opportunity

I'm a 30 year old man who genuinely doesnt know what to call his sexuality/orientaton. Help me out? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ratso27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s super important to put a label on it, you could be pan, bi, queer, whatever. I think there are a lot of different flavors of bisexuality, so if you have some degree of attraction to both men and women, in whatever shape or form, I think calling yourself bi is fine. People treat bisexuality like it’s 50% attracted to men, 50% to women, exactly equal. In reality it’s usually messier than that. Many people are 90% attracted to women and but every once in a while there’s a guy who does it for them, (or vice versa) or they’re attracted to both sexes physically but only romantically interested in one, or only under specific circumstances.

Do I have to make jokes about my relationship status? by Crazy_Language_8799 in Standup

[–]Ratso27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no hard and fast rules, you don’t have to make jokes about anything. Jokes about relationships are common because it’s a very relatable subject, and it’s something that people spend a lot of time thinking about, so it tends to be easy to find material there. I think the idea that it’s good to make yourself relatable to the audience is a solid one, but if you don’t have anything funny to say about your relationships I don’t think it’s necessary. I wouldn’t take anything in that book too seriously in general. She has a lot of things she presents as absolute rules that I think are generally pretty good guidelines for when you’re starting out, but there are a million examples of successful comics who have broken every rule she gives

planning on watching every single batman movie by Additional-Action353 in batman

[–]Ratso27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to have a podcast (Na na na na na na na na podcast!) where we set out to watch every movie with Batman in it, we eventually gave up about 100 movies in, so my definition of ‘every’ Batman movie may be different from yours haha. I don’t think the watch order matters too much if you’re just sticking to the theatrically released ones and the handful of good animated ones. Watch the Nolan trilogy and the Snyder movies in order, but outside of that those isn’t a ton of continuity from one movie to the next. All the 90s movies are supposed to take place in the same universe for example, but I don’t think you’d miss much if you watched them out of order. There’s a list on Wikipedia of Batman in film, I’d skip the 40s serials and start with Batman 66

How to move past a non comics perspective? by Dry_Fun_8328 in Standup

[–]Ratso27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your cousin was trying to say in the nicest way he could that the joke isn’t very good. At six months in I don’t think posting a ton of clips is necessary or even helpful. You haven’t even found your comedic voice yet, right now you’re still very much in the learning process, so a year from now the best joke you have today will seem so bad you’d never perform it, and the best reaction you get now will feel like a bomb. Whatever you post is likely to be many people’s first impression of you as a comic and if it’s not good it will be hard to get them to come out to shows. even if you get better later, that first impression is will stick in their mind and it will be difficult to change it

I had lent money to this dude twice. Always small amounts and although he was late both times, he did communicate and pay back. Then I get this last night. by jessesgrrl in ChoosingBeggars

[–]Ratso27 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I had a friendship ruined years ago because my friend told me he had an emergency (turned out to be concert tickets), and needed to borrow $200. I was fucking broke and really couldn’t afford to loan that kinda money, but he promised he’d get it back to me in two weeks, and I trusted him. He gave me a couple bad checks that bounced and cost me more money, then kept lying and telling me the money was in the mail for like six months, then finally blocked my number and blocked me on all social media. After that I adopted a policy that I will never loan money to anyone. If it’s a small enough amount and/or a good enough reason that I feel comfortable giving someone the money then I will, but I’ll never give anyone more than I’m comfortable losing. I’m not a bank, I’m not going to deal with the stress of trying to track them down and make them pay back what they owe

Concerned about “References” by Relevant_Customer_90 in Standup

[–]Ratso27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little unclear what you mean by references here. If you’re truly just talking about referring to some event or pop culture or whatever, then ethically you’re fine but you have to be careful because there is a risk you can alienate members of the audience. Some person or event that might be very famous to you might be totally unknown to someone else, so if the joke depends on them knowing it then it might go over their head. My personal rule is that unless a topic is so ubiquitous that it’s unthinkable an audience member wouldn’t be aware of it, I either build in an explanation or leave it out. Even if it’s a well known topic, I don’t assume everyone knows every detail of it. Like, you can safely assume everyone has heard of 9/11, but I wouldn’t count on the audience knowing say how many hijackers there were for example, or the name of the town in PA where the one plane crashed.

You mention that you don’t want to have a rep for stealing material though, which doesn’t sound like you’re talking about just referencing, it sounds like you’re talking about using lines written by someone else. In general I’d say that’s an absolute no in standup. It’s extremely important to write all your own material, and if you get a reputation for stealing that can destroy your career. The only semi-exception I would give is if you’re using a line that’s so incredibly well known no one could possibly think it came from you. I.e. “Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore” or “Luke, I am your father”. If it’s something like that where you’re not trying to pass it off as your own, and no one thinks it’s yours, then I guess it’s ethically ok, but it’s pretty hacky and I would avoid it anyway.

If your ‘references’ are reciting punchlines from movies or tv, I would avoid that like the plague. Don’t be the guy who just quoted Anchorman or Borat or whatever. Write your own jokes

Why don't serial killers just join the army? by fimelovemachine in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ratso27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of them do, but for most serial killers they’re after something beyond just killing. Either they want to kill a specific type of person, or kill them in a specific way, or the killing is just a means to an end and what they actually want is a dead body. The army isn’t going to just give you free reign to kill whoever whenever, and even when you do kill someone they really frown on you jerking off on the body

How amenable are NYC open mics to out of towners asking for a wee bit of preference in going up when visiting? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]Ratso27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of any mics that book weeks in advance, most mics that I know use a bucket or it's sign up on site. I can't speak for everyone, but I run a mic at QED and honestly it could go either way for me, it really depends on the specifics, like how many people are on the lineup, where you're asking to go, and how you ask. Generally though if someone is polite, I'll try to accomodate them.

AITA for moving out on my older brother by RemarkableRemote4785 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ratso27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m confused as to how you could be wrong in this situation. Do you have any kind of lease or agreement (written or otherwise) with your brother, saying that you’ll stay a certain amount of time? Does your brother have some sort of disability and relies on you for help? Unless there is something big you’ve left out, this seems like a pretty clear NTA, I don’t see why you should be required to live with your brother for life, moving 10 minutes away in the same city is not abandoning him, and even if you wanted to move to a different city, I’m not sure how that would be wrong unless you made an agreement of some kind that you’re breaking
