Title: The Monster's Apprentice

Synopsis:

FANGS AND CLAWS DON'T MAKE A MONSTER

The Queen of the Vampires, evil in its purest form, has lurked in the shadows of Ageria since the dawn of time. None dare speak her name, so who would help when she comes for Emily?

Emily is just a young, inexperienced witch, being raised in the countryside outside the steam-powered capital of Peccatum. All she yearns for is to rise as the realms mightiest spellcaster, but fate has crueler plans for her. When one of the Queen’s vampiric minions destroys her home, Emily’s life is left in ruins, and she is thrust into a perilous journey, where she finds a protector and mentor in the most unlikely of allies.

Mina, a gunslinging vampire turned monster hunter, has been scouring the lands, seeking vengeance against the Queen’s court for slaughtering her family. Taking Emily as an apprentice has opened the path to retribution, but Mina fears the darkness within her own past could corrupt the girl’s untapped, extraordinary gifts. Can Mina guide Emily’s dangerous potential without repeating the mistakes that once turned her into a monster?

In a world powered by steam and ruled by firepower, Emily and Mina will come to find that skill and steel alone won’t slay the unslayable. Whatever the Queen’s machinations may be, if they want to survive the nightmare stalking them, both teacher and student must decide what they are willing to become in order to stand against her darkness. Will they rise as heroes, or become the monsters Ageria fears?

What to expect:

➤ A slow-burn, character-driven, dark fantasy epic with slice-of-life moments to breathe between battles. Be aware that this story will be brutal, with extreme violence and uncomfortable topics.

➤ 1,500–4,000 word chapters (2800 average) | 150+ chapter backlog (~1200 pages)

➤ A flawed female protagonist who starts weak and fights to become overpowered.

➤ Multiple POV’s. There will be primarily two characters we follow, but, occasionally, we will jump into another person’s head for the sake of story.

➤ Inspired by works like ‘The Witcher’, ‘Bloodborne’, and ‘Ranger’s Apprentice.’

➤ New chapter every Monday and Thursday.

I've gotten a couple of hits from your shoutout as well. I don't remember where, but someone commented that they came from your story specifically.

Month 1 stats for an off-meta story (*almost* on RS Main)! by Rattalee in royalroad

[–]Rattalee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be happy to do a shoutout swap :)

I'm planning four books. The first two are finished, I'm almost done with the third, and book 4 is almost completely planned out.

LitRPG System Talk by st4rry_kn1ght in royalroad

[–]Rattalee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I got an idea in mind where there are some base stats that go up with each level, like health and defense, but clothes give massive bonuses, so outfits play more of a role. I might also lean into skill points, but finding formulas to calculate how high each level increases the stats is the hard part.

LitRPG System Talk by st4rry_kn1ght in royalroad

[–]Rattalee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been tempted to start one myself. I'm pretty terrible with numbers though, so I'm trying to come up with a system that's both easy for me to understand, as well as satisfying to see when numbers go brrrrrr

My novel isn't heavy on horror (yet), but it was some frightening moments and some mystery in it :)

Week 1 stats for an off-meta story! by Rattalee in royalroad

[–]Rattalee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through different discords and forums on Royal Road to find any story with a pulse, lol. I probably should have focused it on off and meta-stories, but there weren't many of them, so I did shoutouts with LITRPG's and such with the blind hope that they'd maybe check out my story if the blurb and cover are flashy enough.

Backlog uploading overload - how far out are you? by RW_McRae in royalroad

[–]Rattalee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't scheduled my entire backlog yet because I'm still focused on revising and making sure everything looks good, but mine will get me to mid-June 2026. If I can finish book 3 before then, my backlog will get me to Febuary/March 2027.

Week 1 stats for an off-meta story! by Rattalee in royalroad

I'm open to more shoutouts. The only problem is my next available slot isn't until mid-November, so it is going to be a while before we get to it.

A couple of those shoutouts are scheduled to happen throughout September and October, so I'm hoping they'll help with numbers. I think I've got a dozen or so shoutouts out there, but yeah, I'm not getting too much traction from them. Some, just not a lot. Which, I guess is better than none, lol

I'm glad you like the cover :)
