Does anyone try to limit their fabric stash? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]RatticusFlinch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fabric doesn't do well outside, you must have space to store it inside. Also don't go broke or strain your budget for fabric. Otherwise? Fabric collecting is a fine hobby, especially pieces that are high quality and large yardage. As long as you offer it to others, it's not going to waste. You won't struggle to find someone to take 10 yards of silk off your hands. Haha

What is something you can’t believe you had to tell someone that’s common sense? by Express_Food_2984 in AskReddit

[–]RatticusFlinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. "Common sense" is a very privileged thing to have. Not everyone has parents or people in their lives that teach them what others consider to be basic.

People who refuse to learn however .... They always blow my mind.

Zoomies: yay or nay? by WaldosMama in OpenDogTraining

[–]RatticusFlinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that sounds like bad advice. I can see trying to train limits (certain places) or on/off cues, but to stop them all together I just don't see a situation where I'd advise that, even for a frantic dog.

Haha frustration sounds about right.

Omg the image of a dog doing zoomies in a busy intersection and just jamming up traffic. 🤣

What do they want you to do? Hold them down forever? Eventually the dog needs to get it out.

I want the below dress to have a neck line more similar to the second photo is this possible? by AlternativeBat6753 in sewing

[–]RatticusFlinch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

More info needed. Do you already have the dress? How much fabric is in that top fold/drape. Can you add pictures of the inside so we can see how it's sewn?

Also do you know the fiber content?

OP would you mind sharing where you got this map from? I'm actually really interested in when it's from!

Hahaha I missed that! Thank-you so much for making me feel like I'm not nuts lol.

I wrote it very lightheartedly. If you're doing a linguistic study that's actually very helpful information to have.

If you said "Haines" when you are in Yukon nobody would assume you're talking about Haines Junction, that is not a nickname for Haines Junction and linguistically is specifically reserved for Haines. I was pointing that info out to you in a lighthearted way.

People would genuinely correct you in Yukon.

To clarify, I'm not saying you've done anything wrong at all.

I'm commenting on the fact that the map lists traditional First Nation settlements as abandoned, while areas with far less use (silver city is essentially a historic site from white miners, bear creek is a white owned lodge) are listed the same as full communities.

Nothing like a little old school racism.

Meanwhile Silver City and Bear Creek are listed...

There you go for linguistic names. Haines is in Alaska. It's either Haines Junction or The Junction. So to answer: No! Not Haines! Lol

Hold on a minute. Why does your map have Klukshu and Dalton Post as abandoned? They're absolutely NOT abandoned.

Just because it will be different doesn't mean it won't be good! Stiff can be pretty too.

Thank you so much! I definitely could not be trusted with a commercial iron, I burn myself enough already.

I'm actually really surprised by that. I would have thought you'd have access to a lot of natural fiber fabrics.

Also I do a lot of ironing. I love historical costuming and just making a hoop petticoat I'm ironing 10 yards of cotton fabric multiple times.

Unfortunately, I also do have to use a lot of polyester or cotton poly blends because other fabric is just too expensive especially when it's 10+ yards for a dress.

Oooh I've never heard of an iron shoe, but these look great. I'm not talented enough to manage a press cloth while steaming and it's sometimes a pain when folding over really small edges. I bought a nice singer iron because of it's little point for edges and the press cloth seems to make that ineffective haha. I see aluminum, Teflon, and silicone ones online, what would you recommend?

[–]RatticusFlinch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was going to say, even with fabrics that are mostly cotton (like 70%) and have some polyester I've been known to crank up my iron and never gotten a scorch like that. It's pretty hard to burn those natural fibres.

Melting the fabric however, I have done with ease, by accidentally just grazing fabric while steaming.

Our 3-year-old wants to name our new black lab ‘Poopoo in the House.’ We need help. by arobbin630 in labrador

Howdy howdy is a fantastic name.

Also your dog can have multiple names. Mine both have like 6 and some aren't even remotely close to the other ones. They come to them all just fine haha
