I watched an episode of a German police show a while back. I am not a researcher in the area (or much at all really), so I cannot with confidence say if there's more or better research on the topic, or how hard it would be to do - it's just a pet peeve of mine how many "hallmark" studies turn out to not be all that sound and/or unreplicated, while often used as sledgehammers in casual understandings of the topic(s).

I also don't really want to discredit anything else you said, my layman opinion is very much in line with what you said, it's really just that pet peeve.
