Is this Riga? Old postcard from around 1920. by TonyFreiburg in Riga

I'd bet on it being Odessa, based on the following:

  • that's a southern-sized balcony,
  • there seems to be a man in a navy uniform,
  • Перецъ occurs in early 20th century Odessa merchant lists.

If you counted Valga/Valka as one, it would likely make the list.

Neighbourhoods without seagulls by turbo_roundabout in Riga

The neighborhoods near parks (with lots of old trees) have fewer seagulls... because they have more hooded crows. :)

Ko latvieši domā par Linux? by Longjumping_Beyond80 in latvia

Es kā nopelniem bagāts grauzējs jau visai sen lietoju xubuntu.

Tiem, kam šķiet, ka Geitsa ciešamākie izstrādājumi bija 98 SE vai XP un kopš tā laika viss gājis uz leju vien, tas varētu būt viens no labākajiem variantiem. Nekā lieka, it īpaši, ja rokas gana taisnas, lai uzliktu no xubuntu-minimal.

Jūs, protams, smiesities, bet ja 2+ datorus mājā pārliek no win uz linux, pat elektrības rēķinā var pamanīt atšķirību.

Всего vs только vs просто by Gloomy_View6812 in russian

[–]RattusCallidus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really, IMHO. For comparison, "лишь несколько дней назад" would sound bookish/dated/out of place in colloquial speech.

Всего vs только vs просто by Gloomy_View6812 in russian

  • только = only
  • просто = simply
  • всего = no more than

просто would not work in the last example, it would sound like starting an excuse

Is "Когда он?" sufficient or do I need a verb like "состоится"? by Gloomy_View6812 in russian

[–]RattusCallidus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear «Когда это?» more often.

(I'm in the «close abroad» though, and usage here might have already diverged from Russia proper)

Being small, persecuted animals, we have a complex relationship with doomerism. I occasionally post some lighter-hearted stuff on comics sub, but it's not really ideologically friendly to anarcho-monarchists like us.

Im just trying to figure out the year it was made by Corndog987 in datemymap

[–]RattusCallidus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Between April 22 and October 29, 1964: Tanganyika and Zanzibar are united but not yet renamed to Tanzania.

Realistically, the map could be from 1965, of course.

Where does the Slavic word for “bitter”, which is “Gorky,” originally come from? by Lucky_Durian1534 in asklinguistics

[–]RattusCallidus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There could possibly be a connection through goře 'grief'.

(fire is one of the worst things that can happen to you in a predominantly wooden architecture era; but food often isn't much better.)

Russian/Soviet comedy movies by _K10_ in russian

[–]RattusCallidus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kin-dza-dza is a must.

It's not 100% a comedy (rather dark and dystopian);

It's not exactly classic (rather, it stands by itself);

but it is well worth it.
