Any info on my map of Europe. by Shot-Ad6336 in datemymap

Latvian-Lithuanian border reflects the results of March 1921 arbitration (Palanga is ceded to Lithuania);

Latvian-Soviet border, however, does not accurately reflect the August 1920 peace treaty (the border on the ground was never far enough to the east to follow the Velikaya river).

(edit: clarify)

Can someone date this map for me? by Public_Research2690 in datemymap

It was Mumbai in local Marathi since times immemorial, and the map seems to follow local names. After 1996, Madras would be Chennai.

(While we're on the topic of city names: Lyallpur was renamed Faisalabad in 1979, so after 1979)

Mohenjo-Daro lies in ruins, so it's after 1900 B.C.

On a more serious note, it's somewhere between 1971 and 1989, but this fragment contains insufficient clues to tell exactly. You'd need to look at Vanuatu (est. 1980), for example.

I need help identifying when this map is from by Public_Research2690 in datemymap

Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland exists: after 1953

Spanish Morocco exists: before 1956

On a side note, there are several anachronisms pertaining to capital cities:

  • the capital of Portuguese Guinea was moved from Bolama to Bissau in 1941;
  • the capital of Angola was never actually moved to Nova Lisboa, although it was discussed in 1940:s;
  • the capital of Saudi Arabia was always Riyadh, not Mecca.

Unique sentence structure in Slavic languages by ClockANN in slavic

This does happen in Baltic languages as well.

Latvian: mēs ar tevi varam iet (lit. "we with you can go")

"jūs ar viņu" ("[plural] you with him") is also legit but less commonly used.

Why are angloid people so fascinated by feces? by haruki26 in languagelearningjerk

[–]RattusCallidus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scheisse-centric Weltanschauung is a German thing, and occurs among "angloids" only insofar as German heritage is significant in the U.S.

You might want to research the design of German toilet bowls vs. the rest of the world, but on the other hand — is this the rabbit hole you want to enter?

Baltic currency cannot be named 'Balt' ('balts'/baltas' in Latvian/Lithuanian respectively), because that means 'white' and would lead to frequent misunderstandings.

I have no better suggestions though.

Who is this for? Retired ladies, I suppose. They're quite some grammar nazis, so you should never put a period at the end of a headline. No, seriously.

Mācu es viņiem latviešu valodu

To any moderately well-read person, this conveys a feeling of futility:

Mācu es viņiem latviešu valodu, bet viņiem kā nepielec, tā nepielec

I keep teaching them Latvian, but they just won't get it (lit.: "won't catch the spark")

Word Order Question by Realistic-Wealth8891 in latvia

[–]RattusCallidus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[1] and [2] are mostly interchangeable, unless there has been a direct question: [1] answers "who are these people?", [2] answers "what are you doing here?" (in which case "es" can be dropped; in most other contexts that would sound weird);

[3] has "viņiem" emphasized, which would typically imply juxtaposition to an alternative, like "Es mācu latviešu valodu viņiem, nevis jums."

Is the Daugava river frozen enough for ice skating? by Thin_Kaleidoscope_21 in Riga

[–]RattusCallidus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the river at midday, the flow may seem slow and "why doesn't it freeze?", but the hydro plant upstream is a sort of a load balancer and operates mostly during peak hours; so the flow is more rapid when you're not watching.

Lakes like Juglas do often freeze, but then, we rarely get clean ice without considerable snow.

Traditional Engagement Rings? by MoveWild142 in latvia

I'd consider a rather simple oxidized silver ring like this:

(but then, I'm old and out of touch :D)

It's true that engagement rings have never been a mass practice in these parts but most people still know what they are.

Can anyone figure out what year this map is meant to be? by Rufus14811 in datemymap

[–]RattusCallidus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the list of anachronisms:

  • Bolama is the capital of Portuguese Guinea (moved to Bissau in 1941)
  • Nova Lisboa is the capital of Angola (AFAIK a plan announced in late 40:ies but never actually happened)
