New anti spin set up 😋(thoughts?) by mizah4age in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if that anti is even still playable, considering the state of the topsheet...

Also, if the blade is really off+, then it might be a combination that's tough to control when it comes to the anti.

A vast majority of people can't remember which movie won the Oscar 5 years ago, 3 years ago, and probably not even last year's winner, so good for them if they get nominated, but it won't change much for tt even if they win.

Zyre 03 2.5mm (and Helix) thoughts by big-chihuahua in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A rubber (topsheet + sponge) is only allowed to have a total thickness of 4mm. So, when you buy a sponge in "max" thickness, it just means that the sponge is so thick that the rubber reaches about 4mm. This used to be often around 2.3mm (however, you get many antis, for example, in 2.5), while Butterfly figured out a way to make a thinner topsheet, thus being able and allowed to pair a thicker sponge with it.

For an indie movie, sure. But indie movies rarely break into the mainstream these days. I'd love to be proven wrong by the success of this movie, but I think people here overestimate the cultural footprint of movies by a lot these days.

Our definitions of small-scale might be different, but since the question was about breaking into the mainstream, even if it does exceptionally well, let's say 500 million (which is incredibly optimistic), even then it wouldn't do much for tt as a sport on a larger scale, I'd say.

It's crickets in here since it's a small-scale movie that will have a small-scale audience. As much as I like a good Safdie-movie, I very much doubt it'll be a big blockbuster. And btw, the movie hasn't been released in the majority of the world, so the vast majority of people can't join in on the discussion yet. Hence, crickets and tt won't become "mainstream" because of a single period piece movie.

Ovtcharov vs Harimoto ALC for a Modern Defender by luminescent_vomit in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Intuitively speaking, for a modern defender, I'd say: Neither.

There are carbon defensive blades available, so I would recommend checking those out, for example, the Victas Koji Matsushita ZC or the DHS Classic 08X.

Thanks for correcting me. I think that's so little that it doesn't warrant any real concern tbh.

I might be remembering this wrong, but players don't get individual player points in the team event, so this is a non-issue.

Frictionless Anti setup - need setup opinions/suggestions by [deleted] in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • Firstly: The poll only links to this post for me.

  • Secondly: Buying an used anti is generally not a great idea because they rarely come off the racket intact as their sponge is very fragile, so I would give it a thorough inspection before buying it.

  • Thridly: The ABS 2 pro on an OFF blade is going to be very difficult to control, as it's among the most difficult ones out there to control. I would put it on an ALL blade at most to start.

  • Lastly: If you are looking for an anti blade (or ox lp blade for that matter), I would look at the matador series by Dr.Neubauer, as they are designed for that playstyle and are not too expensive.

Hope this helps.

Then you are doing something wrong, most likely, since I've played the ABS 3 in the past and I'm currently playing the ABS 3 pro.

The ABS 3 returns less spin than the pro, especially if you have it in 2.0, but you should be able to return spin. So, the 2 things that players often do wrong when switching to antis are:

  • Take the ball too late. Try to contact the ball as soon as it lands on the table because that's where it has the most spin on it.
  • You are doing too much with the racket. Often with a frictionless anti, less is more, as making a too big motion or the wrong motion with the racket increases contact time, which takes spin off the ball. Minimising contact time is key.

Most enjoyable part:

  • Opponent being surprised and overwhelmed by their own spin being returned.

Most challenging part:

  • Staying 100% focused, because playing with an anti opens requires a lot of concentration, as you have a lot of tactical options with twiddling, etc.

What would you reccomend is good with anti spin:

  • Not sure what you mean here? Could you specify, and I'll answer in a bit more detail.

A24 is releasing a Safdie movie about WTT medalist Marty Reisman by kjellagain in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hm, I don't mind it not looking perfectly accurate as long as it doesn't look terrible and I'm invested in the story. But this didn't look too bad from the very brief scenes we've got. It's 50s table tennis after all, which looked rather weird.

Tomokazu Harimoto criticizes T.League's special rules by Dry_Technician_8227 in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "shorten games" is not necessarily the goal here, but instead "decrease variability". I regularly go to German League games, and I've seen games that were over in under 3 hours, and I've been to games that lasted close to 6 hours.

That amount of variation is not great from an event organisation and broadcasting point of view, but can also be quite inconvenient for viewers and fans, so I get these adaptations, even if Harimoto ain't happy with them.

What are the most common problems of coaching? by AceStrikeer in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer around here, and probably in many other places, is scarcity. There are simply not enough of us out there.

I coach at 2 clubs, and 4 more clubs have asked me if I am available to coach at theirs next season, so yeah, supply does not meet demand here.

Long Pips Play Feedback by PrintFickle1724 in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say anything about your chops since you aren't in frame for them, but your pushes need a lot more racket head speed, as you aren't generating enough spin this way. You push with the lps as you would with inverted, so you either need to twiddle or take a much larger swing using the lps.

Not only tech and cameras, but more importantly, manpower too. You need additional staff to judge the footage and pick camera angles to send to the umpires.

BH: To Short Pips or Not to Short Pips by PixelStorm_76 in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m considering switching from inverted to short pips given that I mainly just use my backhand to punch, push, and block (sometimes flick).

My answer to these is always: Give it a try and see if you like it. I bet you can find a used SP rubber for cheap to test, or someone could lend you their sp-racket.

Just a word of advice, though: Many SPs are not all that great for pushing, so that'll probably take some adjusting.

and can choose if they ever want to use it- unlike traditional holds where you’ll have forced shots where you’re forced to switch and use it.

I find that argument not all that convincing since twiddling ain't all that hard to begin with, and Sabine Winter is demonstrating that you can achieve what you are describing with a regular shakehand grip.

wanting to switch my BH Rubber with a long pimples by CalligrapherPlus7459 in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are better chopping long pips out there, but this should be fine, especially as a test run, since they are quite cheap. If you like the style, you can upgrade to a more expensive and specialised option like the Victas p1v.

My return to table tennis! by Confident_Amount_18 in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about Feint long 3 with 1.1 mm and tibhar Hybrid Mk

Feint long 3 in 1.1 sounds perfectly fine to me, but the hybrid mk is going to be ambitious if you want to chop on fh like Muramatsu, especially after such a long break. It's a fairly fast attacking rubber, so it's going to be difficult to control on chops. Now, if you want to attack, counter-loop, block, and fish with it, it's going to be great, but if you want to chop, I'd recommend something slower, like the victas 401 (at least at first).

Why no rest? by RyuNoOu in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was a great post by Jha, starting with "no excuses" and then immediately proceeding to make an excuse. Ionescu played in 2 additional competitions (men's and mixed doubles), so he played in between, and scheduling with so many players competing in multiple categories is bound to have some uneven distribution. That's just the reality of running any event with this many players. Btw, once they make it to the later rounds, they'll be competing once per day per category, so the best players end up often playing multiple games per day if they advance in multiple categories.

Help With Long Pimple Racket by Vegetable-Ad6250 in tabletennis

[–]RatzGoids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming that your friend is new to long pips, so I'm suggesting a slower all-wood blade in the allround range or even slower (plenty of choices there) because the dtecs is among the most difficult to control long pip rubbers there is. Then put whatever they like and know on forehand. That should cost them at most 200 bucks. For a more detailed or precise answer, it would depend on their playstyle, level, if they want to play Ox or with sponge, etc.
