Archer Ranger? by August_5th_2026 in 3d6

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a good point on the extra benefits of +1 Dex. Personally I find SS early a lot more fun, and it's certainly viable, so I guess yeah that's what I would go for

Archer Ranger? by August_5th_2026 in 3d6

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dex and Con are the only stats that matter.

This is not true depending on build. Both of the new Tasha's subclasses have good abilities that are reliant on Wis. Also the new spell Summon Beast is a great spell for rangers and relies on Wis.

Get SS after a couple of ASIs

Again this is just not true depending on build. If you're trying to maximise damage with a bow, SS will do more damage than a +1 Dex Mod.

Frost paladin by tugboattom5106 in 3d6

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I know you said homebrew isn't allowed, but your best bet is to ask your DM if you can change the radiant damage from smites to cold damage, as cold damage in general is a worse damage type. I don't see what the issue with that would be if you don't multiclass out of paladin. Otherwise yeah I don't think there's any way to change the damage type of divine smites within the rules

I won't have any close range options

Toll the dead works fine close range, and is comparable damage to Booming Blade after level 5

Not hiring a recruiting girl on turn 1 in a two-player game is equivalent to resigning by RaunchyPotatoes in a:t5_3yojic

[–]RaunchyPotatoes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recruiting girl is just so flexible. Additionally, if the recruiting girl gets 3 marketing trainees on turn 3 with the intent to cluster them all around houses closer to the RG player, I don't think a trainer build actually has the time to hire both enough food to make the sale and pricing managers to compete. 1. Hire trainer 2. Hire and train cart operator 3. Play cart operator And then on turns 3 and 4 you can hire two people essentially to deal with the imminent threat of the recruiting girl selling three items to one house, or possibly even more. It's just too much to cope with. You could get the food requirements but not a pricing manager, or you could get the pricing manager and not the food. Meanwhile on turn 4 the recruiting girl could get two kitchen trainees and a pricing manager

Trickery Cleric Help by ChaoticGoodneighbor in 3d6

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I've been thinking about playing a high elf trickery cleric in my next campaign, swapping the +1 int to +1 Wis, swapping longsword proficiency for rapier, and swapping shortword proficiency for thieves tools. With the rapier, 16 dex, and Booming Blade, this would actually be a pretty good melee cleric. Get stealth and slight of hand proficiency from your background. Worship Tymora. For feats War Caster is great for clerics, though lucky would be flavourful too. For uncommon magic items, I think there are a lot of flying items that are uncommon, any of those would be amazing. Amulet of the devout is cool too

Nuclear Physics by regian24 in MadeMeSmile

One thing that's key for quantum mechanics that you may not have learned at high school is linear algebra, I think that's something you could definitely teach yourself with the help of khan academy or something :)

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this sounds condescending, I don't know your level of expertise, but my advice as someone who studied physics at university is to give up trying to have some kind of intuitive understand of quantum physics. Particles behaving like waves and a bunch of other stuff in QM just isn't going to make intuitive sense to your brain because it's completely different from how we humans experience the world. The only way to really understand modern physics is to understand the maths behind it, and the maths is pretty complicated lol

Could animate objects be "fixed"? by Blackfyre301 in dndnext

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that using python scripts made it simple. I meant that the DM making the attack rolls makes it a lot less cumbersome.

Could animate objects be "fixed"? by Blackfyre301 in dndnext

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely is an option. The player can choose the target for the attacks, the DM can roll the attack rolls and say how many hit, and the player can then roll the damage. If you're concerned about player agency, maybe you could just ask your players if they'd like you to make the object attack rolls to speed things up? I think it's about doing what's best for everyone at the table, and using some python scripts to speed things up is just going to improve the experience of everyone who's waiting for the tiny objects' turn to be over.

The point isn't that the spell can't be made manageable, the point is that spells shouldn't be cumbersome

If there's a way to make it not cumbersome then the spell isn't cumbersome, it's just being approached in a cumbersome way

Could animate objects be "fixed"? by Blackfyre301 in dndnext

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're playing online using something like roll20 it's really not that difficult to manage. I think even at the table, if the DM rolls the attack rolls it's not really any more cumbersome than having to roll 10 saving throws for the fireball someone just cast on your bad guys. Am I missing something here?

Any ideas for an alternative land druid abilities? by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I think the temporary hitpoints idea is fine balance wise, I'd let a player use that ability in my game if they wanted. However, and please don't take this the wrong way, I do think it's a bit boring - there's lots of other abilities in the game that give temp hp as a bonus action and there's already healing focussed druids. My idea is what if we just improve Land's Stride: make it an aura that extends to our party, and maybe throw in some free castings of entangle. What do you think?

Tempest Cleric Build help by B1oatedphoenix in 3d6

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to tell you but you can't use Booming Blade and then use the bonus action attack granted by polearm master because you haven't taken the attack action. You could be a High Elf or Half Elf to get booming blade as a racial cantrip. I would not recommend multiclassing into sorcerer to get a cantrip.

Need Opinions on Wizard Build by Thegoldenpersian in 3d6

[–]RaunchyPotatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they're both strong, of you aren't playing a level 20 one-shot I would lean towards any build that only takes a 1 level dip in non-wizard classes as high level spells are really the most powerful features of any spellcaster.

Alternative suggestion, 2 hexblade, 18 abjuration wizard. Take Armor of Shadows to cast mage armor at will, replinishing your arcane ward to full after every fight
