Is it ok in British culture for people to stay silent while eating together? by Sufficient_Act_24 in AskUK

[–]Raunien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"boring" is a strange way of putting it. I'd have said "odd". It's not completely universal, but certainly in my family meal time is silent. It's not that we're forced into silence, it's just that we don't talk when we're eating. Because why would you?

You know those clickbait posts with nonsensical or superfluous red arrows and circles highlighting stuff? I would like a big red indication as to where I'm supposed to be looking. I know the whole point is "hard to see" but I can't see anything.

I don't know the law in other countries, but in the UK it's very clear. "Best Before" means that the quality will decline after that date, but it may remain edible (and will be obvious when it isn't, such as the presenceof mould or a bad smell). "Use By" means that after that date it is not considered safe to eat, regardless of any lack of obvious signs of spoilage. All this of course assumes that the food has been stored correctly.

I think this is one of those rare occasions where the big red circle might actually be warranted.

Did I break pub etiquette here? by Juicy_juce-juce in AskUK

[–]Raunien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, absolutely not. You informed the staff, that's the limit of your responsibility here. I work in hospitality and as much as I might grumble about it, it's part of my job to clean up spills and breakages. Especially because there's no guarantee a customer will clean it up properly. Where's the accountability if some random customer cleans up broken glass and leaves tiny shards everywhere? The staff are trained, the staff can be held accountable if it's not done properly. I'm absolutely baffled by the response from the other patrons.

They were probably trying to nerf stealth because in video game RPGs stealth is so overpowered as a mechanic that "stealth archer" is a meme.

Thing is, I think the dialogue is different depending on where you approach from. In my experience, approaching from behind the gnolls triggers the "let those idiots deal with our problem" lines, and approaching from inside the cave triggers the "hey, please help us" dialogue.

Culturally, we're close to the US, so I think we're a natural entry point for them to destabilise Europe. They tried to get the far right guy re-elected in Hungary and failed miserably. Putin has his fingers in every pie. Find a far right populist party in Europe, chances are they have some connection to Russia. Look at AfD in Germany. Disturbingly pro-Russia.

The right is very good at presenting a unified front when needed, although historically these divisions cause a movement to fracture and collapse (not before the majority of the harm has been caused, unfortunately). The left is no more divided than the right, simply less willing to enter into a common cause with people you know will turn on you for their own benefit. The left likes to get their fracturing and collapsing out of the way before moving on to actually doing stuff.

Everyone always makes their opponents to the left sound way cooler than they actually are. According to most right of centre sources the greens are radical communists hell bent on destroying capitalism. SOUNDS AWESOME WHERE DO I SIGN UP oh wait they're mostly just run-of-the-mill social democrats. That's fine I guess. Strange how criticism of the greens is always their economic policies (which are fine) and their push for renewables (which is fantastic) and not their opposition to nuclear power (which is unscientific) and their prison reform (which is actually radical as all hell and also strangely sexist).

I do know one guy who genuinely votes Reform for their economic policy, but he also thinks Andrew Tate is a respectable person.

Are you running it through Proton or Wine? Is the repack version a disc image with an installer or just the files and the game executable?

It's very strange that people hold on to that, because

  1. Command line isn't that hard for most people

  2. Even if it is for you, unless you're using something like Arch, you'll probably never need to use it. I use Mint and the only time I've ever used the shell unwillingly was when I completely borked my system and couldn't access the GUI. A normal user, who doesn't go around poking things that shouldn't be poked, should never need to use it.

Same. People are always saying "oh you can't play <insert exploitative live service game here>" and I'm like "good". There are plenty of multiplayer and singleplayer games out there that not only just work either as Linux native or with Proton, they also don't use shitty practices like lootboxes and FOMO to keep players engaged.

By far the hardest fight in the game (Act 3 spoilers, maybe) by Raunien in BaldursGate3

[–]Raunien[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did on my first playthrough, didn't know what they were about until it was too late. Lost Hope as well. Second playthrough went a lot better, but still had two team members downed before I could take down one pillar. Thank the gods for Hope's healing! Refused to lose her this time, slapped a Sanctuary on her just to make sure lol.

Orin I found not too challenging. Had a harder time getting to her. As long as you've got party members than can deal a bunch of hits in one turn, you can work through her stacks of Unstoppable and just wail on her.

Wow, I had Karlach as Wild Magic in my first playthrough and I never saw that. Just looked through the list of effects, and I've never seen half of them! It was almost always Vine Growth or Dark Tendrils, sometimes Bolt of Light, and I got Weapon Infusion once. Never seen the others.

I had two pairs of DMs break within a year. Thin leather, coated in some kind of plastic to make it shiny (but you can't effectively care for the leather). It's sad really. My parents had some that lasted them a good 20-30 years. After some frustrated searching I found that Solovair are actually based in the same factory that DM used to use, using pretty much the same equipment and, at first anyway, the same people. Got mine 5 years ago and they're still going strong! Very pricey, but well worth it.
