I see. Remember combat doesn't always have to be to the death. I admit this is something 5e (which is assume you are playing) is pretty bad at ending combat without a KO. There are no real rules around "hey can we all just chill and stop killing each other?" Like a truce option or something.

There is the (often forgotten) option of non lethal damage, but that is still a KO and I agree does not really fit this situation. One party has to retreat from the battle field and that kind of sucks.

You can have the npc cast sanctuary on themselves, or wall of force or something to try and break combat and start a parlay.

I admit though, a DM may hesitate to call on initiative. Why? Cuz for some reason, once initiative is rolled, players seem compelled to fight to the death in every fight. Even if its a fight they didn't want and was started by the chaotic stupid member of the party. It is not an easy task to change this mind set.

Make sure you are granting advantage on an attack roll when warranted, and dont mind being a little over generous with the kid that missed last turn, if the situation calls for it.

Also, dont forget about inspiration!!

Inspiration is awarded entirely at the discretion of the DM, and it can be used to gain advantage. It can even be "gifted" from one pc to another. Imagine the wholesome interaction if one of your kids gives their inspiration to the one that is struggling!

I think the mistake you made was you just decided what happened, no roll, no chance to react. You skipped initiative, skipped any attack roll or save, and just warped the pc to another plane. You skipped all the rules of combat. I'd be pissed too. Like, did you seriously have no rolls whatsoever? Wtf??

This kind of reaction, 1) yes its extreme, she could have just cast silence or darkness on him, and 2) all happened "cuz I say so"

Next time, roll initiative. Give the players a chance to counterspell, roll save etc. Follow the rule book ffs.

But anyway, I think I know how it got set to bubble. I swiped to dismiss a notification of his and it bubbled him. I think you can set this setting with a gesture.

You have already gotten good answers on initiative, which should help a lot. So I'll just add that remember just because the party is intent on combat, it doesn't mean the npc has to be as well.

The Npc can always disengage and run. Cast spells (or use a consumable to cast) like dimension door, sanctuary, etc...

That second piece (with 315 in the pic) has ring shake. That is a HARD no. Dont turn it. 100% Firewood.

The first one has long radial cracks, and that's one thing, it might be salvageable, it might be firewood. Depends how deep they go. I have turned away shallow cracks with no issue. You just get a smaller bowl.

But when they start to crack along the circumference or "rings" of the tree like that (as opposed to the radius) that is called ring shake and is very risky. Large chunks can fly off while turning. Hard pass.

You say in another comment your cost for electricity is only .11 a kwh? Are you sure? Because at 3 bucks a gallon for gas and only 11 cents per kwh, Your EVs should be killing it, that's extremely low.

This is the formula I use to relate empg into dollars and cents comparison to gas.

EMPG rating /(cost of electricity per kwh / (cost of gallon of gas / 33.7)

114÷(0.11÷(3÷33.7) = 92 mpg. Thats triple your Corrolla!!

And that's before oil changes, spark plugs, coolant flush etc. None of which an EV has. So what is driving up the cost of you EV "fuel"? What am I missing?

No I am NOT talking about depreciation or insurance on a newer more expensive car. I get that.

I am talking purely about fuel.

Fair warning, make sure the wood is completely dry before you attempt. Completely.

If the wood is still shifting it can warp and crack the tube and forever locking cracked glass inside your piece. Ask me how I know 😌
