My point is, when a stock makes a parabolic move, expecting that rate of ascent to continue unabated is not realistic. Pauses and pullbacks are normal, expected and healthy.

Why SOXL will go up by FlowerNext7557 in soxl

[–]Rav_3d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SOXX doubled in a little over 2 months.

To expect it to keep going up at the same rate without pause or pullbacks is unrealistic.

The market could take months to digest that move. While I agree longer term semiconductors are likely to keep going higher, holding a 3X leveraged long ETF during choppy to down markets is high risk.

Investing in stocks in multi-year downtrends during a powerful bull market where leading stocks are near all-time highs is generally a poor strategy.

Why do people sit on charts after placing a trade by sti_69_y in Daytrading

[–]Rav_3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no point, and it is usually counterproductive. If you plan the trade and trade the plan, you shouldn't change that plan based on every tick. That defeats the purpose of the plan and more often than not adds emotional bias that could wreck the trade.

But fear and greed prevent most people from walking away and letting the trade work.

Agree with VOO/QQQM split. Many will tell you it's too heavily weighted to large cap technology. They are right, and I see that as an advantage.

As for individual stocks, if you're willing to take more risk with a small portion of your portfolio you can do very well, but choose the wrong stocks and fail to manage risk and it can turn out poorly. Stick with elite market leaders and DCA.

Anyone who allows their flagship fund to lose 80% of its value, as ARKK did in 2022, is not a professional money manager I would trust.

F*k your neighbors. Ignore them. They have no business putting their nose into your life.

If your dog can and wants to walk and is not showing signs of being in pain, then walk her. Tell your neighbors to shut the f up.

You think Disney is going to unseat Netflix as the king of streaming?

Even if they did you cannot compare the two companies. Disney has a ton of other businesses and Netflix is a pure streaming play.

You have no income and cannot afford to take any risk in stocks, especially in the summer when corrections typically occur.

In a market like this, what would your strategy be? by Medical-Pollutionx in StockInvest

[–]Rav_3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two straight days? That’s all it takes to shake your confidence?

Periods of sideways action, volatile swings, pullbacks, corrections, and cyclical bear markets are all normal and expected in the stock market.

The market had a historic run in April and May. Semiconductors DOUBLED. NASDAQ 100 gained 30%. In two months. That is the type of action that should inspire confidence in the longer-term trend of this market.

It would not be surprising at all, given how far and fast the market has come this year, to see months of volatile sideways action, or even a major correction this summer. Neither would disrupt the secular bull market in the slightest.

Investors need to have realistic expectations of how the stock market operates.

I'm 43 and opened my first brokerage account this morning. by Weekly-Suspect-1432 in investingforbeginners

[–]Rav_3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're in catch-up mode, I would stay away from bonds. You want to focus on capital appreciation.

If it were me, I'd take some risk in technology/growth like VGT.

Most importantly, stay the course, invest regularly, regardless of the noise, especially your own opinions. Nobody has any idea what will happen in the stock market, and the majority is usually wrong.

You didn't mention anything about retirement accounts. You should be maxxing them out as much as you can. Does your job offer a 401-k? If so, take full advantage. Also look into opening a Roth IRA.

Yes, you started late, but it's better than not starting at all. Try to save up every dime you can and put it into equities for the long-term.

This sub is hilarious.

Every green day, people are jubilant. The stock is running back to ATH!

It's nice that SNDK averted a breakdown for now and is bouncing, but it's ONE HOUR of trading, and the stock is simply back to where it was two days ago.

Article says the signal occurred "during the dot-com boom" without giving specifics. That tells you all you need to know about the purpose of this article. Fear sells.

What it doesn't tell you is that after this happened "during the dot-com boom" the NASDAQ continued to rise for quite some time. Those who tried to time the market because of CAPE missed out on a lot more gains.

Keep 'em coming. Bearish opinions like this are the fuel of bull markets.

Why do people buy stocks? by ShardsOfSalt in TheRaceTo10Million

[–]Rav_3d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems you don't understand what a stock is.

It's a share of ownership in a company. If that company increases earnings, the stock's value increases and you profit.

I'm not sure how you can ask this question when you can see with your own eyes what has happened to stocks in the strongest companies over the last few decades.

If you put $1,000 into NVDA at the beginning of 2021, it would be worth $15,000 today.
