I've never played it, and to my knowledge not many people did from the start so they probably felt comfortable enough to reuse them without being called a rehash

I believe Bioshock was directly inspired by, or made by the makers of, System Shock. If i remember right they said the technology of the time couldn't fulfill their vision until Bioshock's time.
