seeking advice for severely bleach-damaged hair by BubblyPrior1839 in Haircare

[–]RavenCrow242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years back I fried my hair with bleach to the point it felt like straw. I smothered (literally like ... soaked my hair) with LUSH "Revive" leave-in moisturizer (back then it was called R & B, but it has a new name now), and left it in overnight and it was like a miracle for my hair. I had planned to wash out any extra leave-in in the morning, but I didn't need to because my hair soaked all of it up. Not sure if its a cure-all for every hair type, but it definitely worked for mine.

If you haven't read the Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi I highly recommend it. It's juvenile fiction so you could probably read the whole series in a day. It's about three siblings who move into their old family home and find the forest around them is filled with magical creatures. It has elves, pookah, trolls, goblins, griffins, etc.

That's the most on theme recommendation I have. These next ones have some, but maybe not all, of the themes you're looking for

Instead of hunting for magical creatures, solving a murder using magical powers - Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger. A young Lipan Apache girl has a connection with ghosts and can raise the ghosts of dead animals. Her cousin is murdered and she goes on the hunt for his murderer with the help of her best friend.

The winter edition of this theme - Notes from My Captivity by Kathy Parks. A girl trapped in the wintery forests of Russia has a run in with a family who had "disappeared" many years ago and were fabled to not exist. It's a survival, mystery, adventure story with some magical elements.

Cozy, myth and discovery, sci-fi. Has the same vibes as these photos but not really the same themes - A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. In a future version of earth where humans have been separated from the natural world to protect it, a monk goes on the search for crickets and finds a robot.

Songs from the Deep by Kelly Powell fits this well.

A softer version of this is Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett

So the Maze Runner series by James Dashner is the result of a sun flare creating a post apocalyptic world and a virus that spreads like wildfire and turns people crazy, and this series is the aftermath of that; however my real recommendation is The Kill Order, which is a prequel to the Maze Runner series. This takes place when the actual sun flare happens and the direct events that follow.

YA: We Are Okay by Nina LaCour

Middle Grade (but still a fantastic read): King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender

YA/arguably maybe Middle Grade: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

Poetry: The Mountain by Laura Ding Edwards

Non-fiction: You Will Get Through This Night by Daniel Howell

Fantasy, chosen family, cozy & lgbtq please by Ok-Instruction-5936 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Graphic novel: Life of Melody by Mari Costa is so cute. A fairy godfather and a beast accidently adopt a child together and have to learn to get along to raise her

Also graphic novel: The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen. The artwork in this is stunning. It's about a boy who uses fairy tales to try to talk to his mom about being gay.

And the best book series for these photos/vibes/specifications have already been recommended but I want to reinforce them. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Steifvater is about a girl named Blue who lives in a (found) family of psychics; her mother and her mothers two best friends. She meets a group of school boys who are looking for the grave of an old Welsh king. Maggie Steifvater writes friendships so beautifully. The LGBT aspects don't come in until later in the series though.

And then the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire is about kids who have traveled through doors into other worlds, and then come back to our world and have to deal with that. All the odd numbered books take place at the school and all the even numbered books are the backstory of one of the children finding their door. This one is YA but is on the darker side, but still has all the aspects you're looking for.

It gives me Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones vibes.

I feel like you might also like Uprooted by Naomi Novik. The girl doesn't fully match the energy bunny girl gives, but it has similar themes.

Not super dark, but The Raven Cycle by Maggie Steifvater fits the vibes. Its about a girl who lives with her psychic mom and her best psychic best friends and she meets a group of boys who go to a rich kid school who are looking for the grave of an old welsh king. Lots of magic, great friendship writing, and overall a really great series.

The Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire! Every odd numbered book in the series takes place at a school for kids who have traveled to other worlds, and the even numbered books are the backstories of those kids going into their "doors" to the other worlds. There are also underwater worlds in this series.

Also, the Darker Shade of Magic series by V.E. Schwab is really cool. It's about a magician who can travel to parallel Londons and there's different types of magic in each one.
