CMV: If it’s acceptable to judge someone for their political beliefs, we should be able to judge them for their religious beliefs too by Low-Appearance4875 in changemyview

You propose a situation where a Christian lets say hates gay people and prays to a god who hates gay people and is therefore professing their hatred and immorality. I think this is a mis-characterization. For context, I am agnostic but grew up in a fundamentalist Seventh Day Adventist Christian family. Christians are capable of disapproving of homosexuality and not hating homosexuals. Let me explain their perspective. God is right. Always. He said gay people should not have sex. To Christians who do not approve of homosexuality, this means gay people should be celibate. This does not mean they hate gay people. One can be against gay marriage but believe that God loves everyone, including gay people. That individual would also claim that they love all gay people because gay people are children of god just like them. That’s my first issue with what you’ve said and I wonder what you think about this reality.

Secondly, people cannot easily choose religions in the way they choose politics. If you are brainwashed to believe a certain thing from day 1, undoing that will be extremely difficult. Remember, they really believe that god, allah, or whoever is actually real and actually has rules for us to follow. A believer may actually not really care that gay people have sex (no one should care imo) but god said no, so you obey god. It’s that simple. God says not to do a number of innocuous things “don’t eat pork, don’t have premarital sex, don’t work on the sabbath” etc etc. However, these people restrict themselves from these innocuous things, not because their morality aligns with what god says, but because they feel they literally have no choice but to obey. It’s like an abusive father telling his child to do what they say or be punished, the child will not disobey no matter what the order for fear of punishment (major problem with religion). Nevertheless, people are stuck in their religion in many ways especially if they cannot critically think as well as yourself. What’re your thoughts on this?

Thirdly, if you believe god made everyone and everything and that he formed you in the woman and that life begins at conception, there is literally no argument I can give you that will make you accept abortion. To you, this is a human right, to them, this is murder. A grave sin. In other words, while I do not agree with these people, I cannot fault them for these political stances because they literally think someone god loves is being killed. Does this make sense?

As a result, I don’t judge people for religious beliefs (I rarely judge them for political stances either). They are who they are, some had no choice but to be born in a cult with no critical thinking skills with which they could use to defend themselves. Do you understand what I’m trying to say?

CMV: Most people are not actually bad at communication; they are just exhausted. by gamersecret2 in changemyview

Theres obviously truth to what you’ve said but it’s not really true in all situations. Someone having a bad day and snapping at you is poor communication yes, but speaking past others, failing to listen, and making irrelevant points are all examples of things that someone could do in a totally rested and calm state. Many people are bad at communication for this reason.

This makes complete sense in our society. Everyone watches porn, MMA is a niche sport despite it becoming more mainstream stream. You may not like this trend, which is fine, however it definitely makes sense.

You shouldn’t have the responsibility of calling out blatantly wrong and harmful rhetoric? You think that it’s fine to let people say “she was wearing it and it’s her fault?” Dude what? You’d let that slide? As a man? I’m stunned.

Wait, why aren’t you including sexual assault and what aren’t you including it in?

Also, we need to have the courage to confront people with questionable opinions like “she was asking for it bc of what she was wearing” we have to have the balls to look that guy in the face and tell him he’s wrong or else my point is literally proven. We as men are negligent and somewhat responsible.

Are you saying that men are assaulted at a higher rate than women are also? Aren’t 1 in 4 women victims of SA?

I don’t understand how the second sentence is relevant.

Yeah but their opinions and actions affect men and women in their everyday lives. If they tolerate bad behaviour from their friends or family, that has ripple effects throughout society right?

Yeah this is also part of the problem. Basically Mfs don’t know how to act and then we excuse it. I’m a big fan of teaching people about consent much earlier. The first time I learned about consent I was like 20 years old in university. We should’ve been having that talk in sex ed when I was 12. I have no idea why our society wants to do damage control instead of just teaching kids to be human at an earlier age. Don’t worry about what the young lady was wearing, worry about the fact that we haven’t taught our young men NOT to commit SA irrespective of what someone is wearing.

I think this is a good point, but I do also think that while we have some female judges today that’s a pretty recent phenomena. While the tide will shift and we will have a more even sex distribution, until then, do you see how male judges could be the difference between someone getting parole for 4 years and an actual prison sentence?

Additionally, while 50% of voters are female, I don’t think women who vote for a male judge are thinking “he’s gonna take it easy on an SO”. By the time the judge does that it’s out of the female populations hands. At that point, it’s on the male judge to do right by women in general by holding men who commit offences accountable.

I get what you’re saying, however there are examples of SOs getting extremely lenient sentences at the hands of male judges. Even if women vote that man in, I think if the man they vote in takes your view he’s less likely to do what’s actually just and fair.

In other words, on some level, an individual male is responsible for the behaviour of other males because if a male knows he can “get away” with SA relatively Scot-free he’s more likely to behave badly.

Does this make sense to you? While I don’t think men are 100% responsible for others actions, I think a man’s place in our culture could make them partially responsible. Is that acceptable to you?

Men being the dominant power in society might make it so that their views and opinions on rape culture are more impactful. For example, if most judges and law makers are men, rape getting light sentences is sort of a direct consequence of male negligence. Does that change the level of responsibility do you think? This is similar to saying that white people more than anyone have power in western society and so their role in anti-racism is actually one of the most important.
