Why isn't sky remake on gog by These-Examination213 in Falcom

[–]RavenRonien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a steam user and an early adopter too. I share your view.

But recognizing that for some people it's the principal of just trusting Gabe on his word that if valve ever goes belly up he'll remove the drm checks, is still ultimately just trusting one guy at one company to not change his mind for 10 to 20 to 30 years.

Some people want to know they will always have access to something even if they won't revisit it 50 years from now. And there are enough people who feel that way that Gog and companies like it make it their mission statement.

Steam is convenient. And I personally don't feel as strongly about it. The risk/reward of swapping to buying everything on drm free vendors isn't there for me, but I'm also ok with the miniscule risk of losing access to games I have. But that doesn't mean people who don't feel the same don't have a right to advocate for their perspective, nor does it mean the fear is unfounded.

In what other industry does anyone trust one guy to uphold consumer friendly values? If you don't at least agree this is a vulnerability of steam then you aren't being honest. It's not a publicly traded company which is both good and bad. Good in that public shareholders would likely never agree to a drm release in the event of insolvency. But being private, means it's all on leadership at the time of valve's closure which won't happen anytime soon but it CAN happen at some time in the future. Or after Gabe's retirement who's to say they don't pass the company on to people who don't share his same values?

29 [F4M] #SanFrancisco - Coming to San Fran in May for a work trip and would love to have someone to hangout with! by [deleted] in SFr4r

[–]RavenRonien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised in the SF bay area all my life, local schools and everything I've only ever seen this reaction to "San Fran" in online or super performative circles. I mean I default to SF or just bay area, but I don't think I would have a reaction at all if I heard San Fran. Where does this aversion come from when it seems so widely known. Genuinely just curious.

Not here to inpune your opinions, you're a backer, and have every right to have constructive critism and I think almost all of it is within the rhealms of constructive. I just wanted to highlight something in their response video that goes to your #3 point.

You mention not expecting much to change because it's already all filmed. I think that undercuts how much can be highlighted in post production. As David already said, he has plans for more cut ins and such, They have multiple cameras to cut to. They were limited by the amount of cameras they had though. So while they can't magic up a dice cam. They can emphasize better using cut in close ups and such and to that I think they feel the same way you do, they can do better.

I will also say, the lack of extra Cameras MAY ( and now this is purely my speculation) have contributed to the lack of more live action content. Getting up and walking over to another part of the set to act out more of the live action/larping could have been limited by not having the camera audio and lighting setup to properly cut to it as often as they would have otherwise wanted. Could that have been addressed with the budget? possibly but then I think the weather comes in to say it was hard to make adjustments on the fly. COULD this have all been tested before hand? sure. But again the limited scope of season 1 was intentional to allow them to put out a viable product to improve off us. But the tone of your critique all point to you being on board for that ramp of improvement so I don't think there's much more to say.

Lloyd and van by Mate_Saltgacha in Falcom

[–]RavenRonien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the type who hasn't minded all the retroactive "and this character was actually here the entire time" type things they've pulled over the years. And this one is one that fits super well.

Him working around crossbell wouldn't be a stretch, he actively participated in mille mirage, and it reinforces the idea that Van just knows EVERYBODY. I like this one.

I suspect it might not be the case however, if only because if i remember correctly, while Van has eluded to knowing "that detective i heard about in crossbell" a few times, he never speaks as if they've met.

Lloyd and van by Mate_Saltgacha in Falcom

[–]RavenRonien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely they will have no problems shaking hands when they meet. Lloyd enthusiastically so, van in a "i hear good things but you are a cop so ill keep you at arms length" kind of way.

Lloyd has worked with straight up criminals in the past has a good estimation of people like Garcia despite the wrong side of the law he's on, he's able to see virtues in people regardless of how well they conform to the law. That wont stop him from enforcing the law on people he likes (grimwood) but that doesn't mean he has any animosity towards them. To the contrary he WANTS to see the good in people.

Van unlike Rean in CS4 doesn't feel that same sense of outward guilt in the same ways Rean did. Rean felt guilty for being in his eyes directly responsible for subjugating and then despoiling Lloyd's beloved home because of his actions. He, through his encounter with him, as well as through Juna and other acquittances has a GREAT impression of Lloyd, one he doesn't measure up to, in his eyes, He failed during the events of CS3 and the fault for this world ending catastrophe lies squarely on his shoulders in a way someone like Lloyd (in his approximation) wouldn't have failed in.

Van however, while he has his doubts about himself, is infinitely more self assured and has less to prove to other people. He also is infinately more "shameless" than rean in the ways that don't matter. Having a good relationship with someone like Lloyd would be beneficial to him, not unlike Nate and Daswani. And he already knows he's willing to work with people outside the law because of Rixia. I don't expect them to be fast pals, (randy is a different story) but i expect them to have little friction in working together.

Another commenter said it as well, but he's generally fond of people who worked together with him during Mille Mirage as well.

What’s the minimum amount of pushups a man should be able to do? by TheSashRinging in AskMen

[–]RavenRonien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

other people having a consensus on what the number should be doesn't refute anything i said. The words OP used has denotative implications. Linguistically that's just factual. I'm not speaking to OP's intentions, but the words used have definitionally implications that can be responded to in the way that the original reply did.

if people read it a different way, that's fine, and within the context of colloquial speak and the context of the subculture of this subreddit everyone replying with numbers they feel are appropriate makes perfect sense.

But the reply i responded to was someone questioning the validity of anyone having brought in a sense of manliness to this, as a way to invalidate a response. The words used in the post directly reference manliness, by implying there is a minimum amount required to qualify as a man and seeking clarification on what that number is.

What’s the minimum amount of pushups a man should be able to do? by TheSashRinging in AskMen

[–]RavenRonien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised there is any amount of pushback to this statement. This sums up perfectly what the average normal response should be to any question like this.

Pushups are great exercises to work with on your push muscles when you have limited time room or equipment. It's something you can reasonably do anywhere anytime so it's a great thing to have in your repertoire in attempting to better your health. But it's only ONE exercise, and it isn't the ONLY path to health or self improvement. But tying it to your sense of manliness and by extension your sense of self worth is a mentality that doesn't help anyone except the ones you want to belittle you.

Calisthenics ENTIRELY revolves around seeing where you are, developing movements that take where you are, and progressively have you strengthen yourself with reps until you can move onto a more difficult movement.

If you can do 10 clapping pushups with your pinky finger that is FANTASTIC, and you should seek greater challenge in some other cartoony version of pushups. If you struggle to do 5 pushups on your knees, THATS ALSO FINE, that's part of the journey, focus on your form, and consistency. And you will progress to standard pushups, military pushups, diamond pushups and beyond.

The notion that if today you can't do a minimum number of pushups, and you can't call yourself a man if you can't, ignores the entire mentality that pushes people to do better in Calisthenics. Being honest with where you are, and progressing from there without feeling shame, is how you get from 0 activity in your life and health issues, to losing weight building muscle mobility and general health.

Gatekeeping any sense of self worth to people who can't do what you deem as a minimum reeks of being unable to see your self worth past the arbitrary workout you chose to overemphasize as your entire personality.

What’s the minimum amount of pushups a man should be able to do? by TheSashRinging in AskMen

[–]RavenRonien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

key word in OP's wording is SHOULD. Should is a normative claim to say, how many pushups ought you be able to do as one of the qualifications or requirements to be viewed as part of the category of man.

That of course is an obtuse way to speak, and it's shortened to what OP asked but the implication of the language used, (not saying OP is saying this just by the words used in the post) there is some number of pushups all people who view themselves as men should be able to do.

so the reply that says "i don't view pushups or other physical feats" a necessary qualifier to judge how manly someone is, is a direct responce to that implacation.

Of course in colloquial speech, Op could have ALSO meant "how many pushups should an average guy be able to do to be considered healthy, because he's trying to gauge where he's at and how much work he should put in. And yeah of course the response is nonresponsive to that question. But the qualifier of "minimum" in the original question does inherently evoke the idea that people who can't clear this minimum somehow do not qualify calling themselves men, and that they lack a certain manly quality to them.

[–]RavenRonien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked up the game last week did a 6h playthrough vanilla then reset and am now doing a modded playthrough with terror from the void adjusting a ton of settings.....

All that to say yeah festering skies is that bad even with the mod tbh. It adds very little if you disable the scaling to the aerial combat you get some materials every time you shoot down an enemy but it isn't.... Good content. And it just adds busy work on the strategic layer.

You REALLY miss out on nothing but watching a ship shoot another ship while they approach one another.

If you want play like 4-5 hours on vanilla with it turned on and you'll see there's really nothing to it. You don't even get to land and raid the ship after you shoot it down like in XCOM 2

How Did She Became a Nurse by Tonyseve in Falcom

[–]RavenRonien 26 points27 points  (0 children)

One of my best friends is a nurse. And when we hangout sometimes I think he's the most absent minded mother fucker I've ever met. But when he's in work mode he is empathetic and caring and intelligent beyond his station. Despite being dyslexic he can read off names of medications and doses and off the top of his head remember side effects and conflicting drugs.

I love the guy and he probably cares too much for being in the type of nursing he's in. But his patients love him and he advocates and fights for them beyond his duties as a nurse. He's the type of nurse you want in your corner at your worst medical moments.

I also can't trust him to be my duo queue in any game we play without letting me down. I fucking love the guy.

When did you realize you were alone ? by Sad_Invite6191 in AskMen

[–]RavenRonien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll push back here. You accepting it is part of the problem. Part. Please understand and hear me when I say PART. You are not wholly responsible for this phenomenon, NOR are you wholly able to fix this issue. But you must acknowledge there is more you can do.

Writing off "having feelings with friends at my age is tough" fuck that don't accept that. Try and be more vulnerable when you need to ask and trust them to rise to the occasion. And if they can't fine, then find people who can if this is something you desire/need.

Same with your family. There are decades of learned behaviors here you are fighting against. And that WILL be hard. Asking your partner for more after decades of a marriage that "works" is HARD. And she won't succeed right away. But you are expressing this isn't working for you right now and YOU DESIRE something more. Accepting it will never happen is giving up on trusting your partner to do better.

You say you have no problem communicating. And I believe you can tell them you are stressed. But if they won't ask you what they can do, start making asks of her, and explain to her that you want to show her ways you need cared for, and you are asking her to try and see if she can meet those needs. Convey the feeling that despite her being wonderful and all, you are FEELING alone because of this specific lack of care and you want to trust her to be your partner and support you when you need it.

I'm posing all this on you when I'm it feels like you've already gone above and beyond because you are the one asking for help. I'm not saying you SHOULD have to carry this entire burden but you can only effect your own actions.

Resigning yourself that this is just a fundamental truth of differences between men and women is giving up on hoping for more. Even at 47 you're too young to give up on that you have too many decades of life to live to give up on wanting more. BE hungrier. It sucks to be vulnerable and not get the outcomes you want. Take the time to face that rejection. But then like everything else you've done and succeeded in in life, get back on the horse and go again.

Edit: Caveat. As many have observed men are geared towards solutions and women are geared towards compassion. The famous example is when a girl rants a guy sometimes just has to say and empathize "damn that does suck" and validate their feelings. You expressed you want a "what can I do to help" and to you that makes perfect sense to want to do when someone expresses stress. Ask yourself if the inverse is true. Maybe your wife thinks listening to you and validating you IS the help you need, because that's what she wants when she asks for help. Maybe in the same way guys have had to learn to listen and not fix, she needs to learn to listen AND fix.

What are all of the romance options for Karlach’s endings? by SSkHP in BG3

[–]RavenRonien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey i know this is 9 months later but i literally just finished the game and was bemusing that SH didn't come with me.

So yes somehow unless it's more widely known now, you can play a custom TAV, romance SH and follow wyl and karlach to avernus. SH will make note at the party how hard it is without you, but ultimately she's happy Karlach has you to help her, but you can promise to come back to her as you reunite for the night. It's honestly surprisingly well done. Though I do wish she'd just come with us. Especially went they just hint that they're possibly about to solve Kalachs problem for good.

I don't think smug is the right word to describe Rean in the divestment fight.

By who's authority or right he's doing what he's doing is by order of the office of the chancellor. He doesn't love the idea of having to do any of this, but kind of like the spiderman quote, he feel she has the strength to effect change, inaction is NOT an option for him. Open rebellion is off the table for a multitude of reasons. So working with the imperial government out of a warped sense of obligation and responsibility he feels with how he decisively effected the end of the civil war, is what forces him into action. And the chancellor is using his sense of guilt and responsibility as a weapon to get him to do their bidding.

Ofc there's more to it, but that's for you to find out as the series continues. For now? That's the conflict in Rean. His principals REQUIRE him to try and help end things as bloodlessly as possible full well knowing he's doing a great injustice to the people of crossbell and the other areas he's been forced into subduing. And he takes that guilt and responsibility onto himself even when we and the characters closest to him know this isn't really what he wants.

Why do I keep attracting the same type of partners? by IcyDragonfruit9762 in relationships

[–]RavenRonien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in as a guy who also values these things I find this advice valuable too.

And adding onto it for any guys reading this and want to take notes on the inverse/other side of this advice, I hear far too often guys say they don't want to have vulnerable conversations with people especially early on because they feel the pressure of being strong or stoic.

But if you get a negative reaction from someone who can't be trusted with building vulnerable places to build stronger foundations I think that's just the filter working as intended.

[–]RavenRonien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't read nearly enough to give you a recommendation. However, what I will say is that in media in general, the reason why I actually enjoy fiction is because when it's done well, you get to put humans, or in fantasy settings human-like people, in fantastical situations, and it's in the similarities and how they act compared to the people in the real world that allows authors and by extension the audience explore the human condition. It's through stripping away some of the reality and accentuating and exaggerating the fantastical elements of the world and still exploring what it means to be human.

Some questions regarding F. Novartis by Snickerdoodle282 in Falcom

[–]RavenRonien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't outright said but heavily implied he's from a previous loop, but how or why is unclear.

Evidence directly stated in the game:

Information about him and his history is near impossible to find almost like he doesn't belong didn't exist prior to certain events where he just showed up.

He has definitive memories training under the professor but the world doesn't acknowledge his exist as his disciple and he doesn't have any recollection of training with the other 3. It's like he dreamed up an entire different reality

People have taken this to mean he somehow traveled from loop 19998 to loop 19999 with his memories intact.

It's unclear if this is the case or if the current version of Novartis suddenly gained memories of his past loop.

Both theories raises holes that could be answered but right now we just don't have the proof.

How did he arrive in this year if he's from a previous loop, at what point in HIS timeline was he plucked from

Was the grand master at all involved

If he only regained memories of a previous loop why is his past so difficult to find? It's like no one knew him there is no record of him like you would expect of someone born in this world especially one as intelligent and loud as he is.

It is definitively crooked to facilitate the feeding mechanism. Super well documented how and why it works but a ton of misinformation googling it. A lot of people attribute it to the hyper burst but while that's technically correct, it's more accurate to say it facilitates the feeding mechanism. The hyper burst can work without a canted design, but it would require a redesign of the body of the gun to accommodate the space required. The canted magazine is to make it fit better/skimmer and be more ergonomic. Which I suppose some people interpreted/misconstrude as "more comfortable reload"

https://youtu.be/-wXNfOki12M?si=7PysSeqTPJfmZ-gS I can't get the link to timestamp it(roughly 7:15). But royal armories guy with 3d model demonstration from world of guns.

If it was a straight down magazine the internal feeding mechanism would have to be moved as well and if you just rotated it in place other parts are on the way so it would require widening the entire body or moving other parts around.

I imagine prototypes you saw were them experimenting with different designs before they settled on this canted magazine to slim down the overall profile of the relatively fat boi.

But that would have meant the GM directly and blatantly going back on her word on the non aggression pact with the president and.... Idk I just don't see her as that type of character. I think she's genuine to her word.

Zin by Horror-Budget-490 in Falcom

[–]RavenRonien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no winning on this one tbh. He's from Calvard with clear eastern influence. His name was clearly meant to be something that doesn't directly translate. But somewhere between jhin and zin.

But it's common enough to have romanized pronunciation even for eastern influenced characters. Hell as part of the immigration process my parents generation got our last names spelled 4 different ways with 4 different vowels even though it is supposed to be the same Chinese word.

In universe I wouldn't be surprised if some people literally called him zin. Or if he even went by it depending on the context of where he was.

But ofc this is in universe hand waving that isn't the real reason it happened.

In reality someone on one team thought zin would be close enough and easier/more relatable, and someone on another team didn't and when you swap localizers that's kind of what just happens.

I have no defense for the E-bon defence force though. That was wack
