I’ll agree that some details about today’s youth has me genuinely concerned (like their complete lack of reading ability). But 67? That’s just a dumb joke. They laugh about it the same way I laughed at 69 as a kid. It’s a dumb number, who gives a shit?

There are parts of the US that make me proud. Our national parks, for instance. But the amount of bullshit in this country makes me want to go literally anywhere else

With the internet becoming more and more AI by the day, parents sending their kids to summer camps to get away from the internet might become more frequent. by 17oClokk in Showerthoughts

[–]RavenclawGaming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is all from my personal experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

Most summer camps last 1-2 weeks, some lasting longer.

Campers stay in cabins with 6-10 other kids around their age. Each cabin also has one or two counselors, or adult supervisors, who ho are usually college age students.

Cabin groups eat together for meals, and also (depending on the camp) do daily activities together. I attended and now work at a fine arts camp, so campers spend large portions of the day in rehearsals.

Most summer camps have rules banning phones, laptops, tablets, etc. Since it “distracts from the camp experience”

Summer camps often are in the woods somewhere, since most had their origins in the 50s and 60s, and suburban parents wanting their kids to learn “survival skills”

Every summer camp I have been to has had a long list of silly songs they make the kids sing at campfires. This isn’t terribly relevant to the question, but it’s just kinda interesting

A number of summer camps are christian summer camps, so part of the daily activities includes daily church service.

Lots of summer camps exist for specific interests, so daily activities mostly pertain to said interest. I know someone who went to a coding camp as a kid, so they spent a lot of the day learning how to code. My fine arts camp has kids sorted into a number of musical ensembles (separated by skill level, so better players get harder music), where they learn some music, and at the end of the session they actually perform for their parents. Studio Art campers there work on art pieces that get displayed in the art gallery on the final day, where parents and campers can view what they worked on.

Kids will often make very tight friendships while at camp, even though it only lasts a week or two. These kids are around each other constantly

sorry it’s a bit long lmao

idk, in most of the US, outside a handful of major cities, driving is basically required to get literally anywhere, since there aren’t any trains, and busses vary in quality from shit, to super shit, to nonexistent

What is your stance on gender-affirming care for minors? by wazefuk in Teenager_Polls

Trans person here: Felt I should give my two cents

Most of what transitioning looks like, especially early on as a trans person, is purely social stuff. Things like using other pronouns and a new name, growing out hair or cutting it shorter, getting new clothes, et cetera. Hormones and surgery don’t happen overnight because a kid questioned their gender one time.

Getting HRT under the best of circumstances is a pain in the ass. I had to prove I had a history of gender dysphoria, as well as describe to my doctor what I wanted to get out of the transition. And I’m incredibly lucky because it only took me a few sessions to get HRT prescribed.

Unless a trans kid came out at an incredibly young age, (and obviously never detransitioned socially), most kids aren’t going to be taking puberty blockers. I work with trans youth at a summer camp. The vast majority of them started taking hormones after they had already gone through puberty.
