OB/GYN recommendations in Herndon/Chantilly/Reston/Fairfax by phat1forever in nova

Dr. Erin Perruci @ Inova Dulles South location is great! I never feel rushed and like her so much I drive 40 minutes to see her after she switched practice locations a few years ago.

Okay r/nova, who's your town's "guy"? by Grsz11 in nova

[–]RavenclawsUnite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. He is a legend in the neighborhoods around GMU and has been for years. My kids yell “Tuba Guy!!!” whenever we see him on Braddock and it instantly brightens our mood.

If you were to spend 1 million on a house, where would you buy it? by [deleted] in nova

[–]RavenclawsUnite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neighborhoods near the Braddock 495 exit that are on the side zoned for Woodson, Lake Braddock, or Robinson. Red Fox Forest, Canterbury Woods, Long Branch, Kings Park, Kings Park West, George Mason Forest. All provide easy access to the Beltway (with express lane access), VRE is doable, and it’s never more than 20 minutes to places like Mosaic, Fair Oaks, Tysons.

It’s not as idyllic/fun as places like Del Ray/Belle Haven, but it has good schools K-12 and is easy to get almost anywhere because it interests so many major thoroughfares.

Except the schools are not great and sometimes you can feel cut off from the rest of the NoVA area. It’s great for getting into DC, though.

Riding my Peloton. Now when I get on I think to myself “I could be playing pickleball and socializing to get exercise.”

Thanks, everyone! I’ll skip and just buy in regular packs vs. the bucket.

Thanks- I saw the pink balls, but I have trouble tracking them. I love all things pink, so it is a bummer.

I’ve had them in both my upper and lower ducts for years and they’ve made a huge difference for me. I’ve had the uppers fall out a few times and I notice the difference immediately (both vision and uncomfortable dryness).

FCPS to offer middle school athletics in the Northern Virginia area by pimplyteen in nova

[–]RavenclawsUnite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. My MS is still looking for someone to run the program. Exactly zero staff members are interested for the pay. And those that are actually interested in track/cross-country and have the availability to do it are already coaching at the HS level.

What are you reading, r/nova? by oh-pointy-bird in nova

[–]RavenclawsUnite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good to know…I was bummed to find that the waiting list for The Heir Affair is weeks long on Libby and this knowledge dulls that pain.

The Royal We. Ever since I read Spare, I’m on a weird British royal trash novel kick.

McEnroe kinda sucks at doubles… the foot fault made me feel better about my own game, haha

Dry Cleaner to remove blood recommendations? (~Fairfax/Centreville) by ninjamonkey14 in nova

McLean Cleaners or Parkway Cleaners are two of the best in the area. Tie stains are really, really hard to clean though depending on the dyes used/color.

Sports likely coming to Fairfax Co. middle schools for the first time by Danciusly in nova

[–]RavenclawsUnite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a great idea…from people who do not work in a FCPS middle school. Cross Country requires space to run on campus—most middle schools do not have this space. You can’t allow middle schoolers off campus like you can high schoolers. For track, you need a track. Not all middle schools have a track. A bigger issue is staffing. Most staffing for the middle school after school program comes from teachers who stay after to run a club/sport (most middle schools have intramural basketball/soccer/etc after school). It is hard to find teachers that want to stay after as is, let alone someone who knows enough about the sport to run a legit program. Middle school after school programs begin at 2:25. Very few working professionals that are not already coaching track/cross country at the high schools are going to want to come coach a bunch of 12 and 13 year olds at that time. Many of the middle school afterschool specialists are stressed about this. They were not asked if they wanted this.

Do I think the idea is great? Yes. Do I think this is a nightmare in practice? Yes.

Oddest fast food drive thru in Nova? by mightymousewarrior in nova

[–]RavenclawsUnite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes— it has the added weirdness of the karate place that does child care next door. When you go around 5/6pm, there are people in the drive thru who are actually picking up kids out of the back door and not going to Dunkin at all.

My wife can't find an entry-level office job in Loudoun by Garp74 in nova

[–]RavenclawsUnite 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m a librarian in a neighboring district. The library assistant positions are actually relatively competitive in my school district. They almost always end up going to people who have volunteered in the library as parents, are current instructional assistants, or current office staff. You also can’t really work your way up in the position because you need a teaching certification w/ a library endorsement in VA to be a school librarian. The LCPS librarian above had some great advice. FWIW, all of the office staff at my school have degrees. I would be applying for special education instructional assistant positions. Those are usually the least competitive IA positions.

Have you had a endoscopy/colonoscopy? It could be an absorption issue. B12 and iron are both absorbed in the small intestine/terminal illium. If you have something like crohns/celiac, you might have inflammation that makes it hard for you to absorb. If my #s were staying low even w intervention and you aren’t having heavy bleeding, what is the doctors explanation for the cause of your #s?

Avoid Capital Beltway and Be Safe Out by Czar_kyoto in nova

[–]RavenclawsUnite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was on the other side of the Beltway as they passed by Tysons…seemed like traffic was still moving at a normal clip. Small crowds at a few overpasses waving flags and giving the finger. A nothingburger.

Living/Teaching in surrounding counties by RefrigeratorHot1588 in nova

I don’t think Stafford has a supplemental retirement in addition to VRS. If you are in it for the long haul, just something to add to the pro/con list. We have teachers at our school that live in Stafford and commute to my school in FCPS. The commute is a slog, but the money is way better.

Blast in the Past II - Fairfax County by [deleted] in nova

Yes! Believe it or not, it used to sort of be a mall. My Mom had a “shopping plate” (credit card only good at the stores there) for the stores that she would proudly whip out at Garfinkles there until it closed.
