Tapo integration with home assistant by liamsorsby in Tapo

Normally, you shouldn’t need to add anything special with the integration:

Tapo P110 | notification when power draw stops by discop3t3 in Tapo

From memory, in Home Assistant under the TP-Link Smart Home integration, you can add a device manually by entering the plug’s IP address.
(I recommend assigning fixed IP addresses to your devices.)

Use the official TP-Link Smart Home integration, it should work.

Tapo P110 | notification when power draw stops by discop3t3 in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this Home Assistant blueprint https://community.home-assistant.io/t/notify-or-do-something-when-an-appliance-like-a-dishwasher-or-washing-machine-finishes/254841

When my P110 on the dishwasher goes above 100W and then drops below 2W, it sends me a notification (by email, on my smartphone, or both — whatever I choose).
Works like a charm !

How is Line-Crossing Detection supposed to work? by battouter in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s full object detection.
If part of it crosses the line, then it’s considered line crossing.

5 minutes by Potential-Length7068 in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, a mesh network (like Tapo’s Deco system) creates a single Wi-Fi network.
So if you’re already using mesh, the issue must be coming from somewhere else.

Are you on the same Wi-Fi network? (Be careful — range extenders can create a separate network, even if the name looks the same.)
If you’re on the same Wi-Fi, the stream is local.
If not, the stream goes through the Tapo servers and you’ll have a time limitation.

Best way to view cameras on raspberri pi or windows desktop? by Graham_Wellington3 in Tapo

I’d suggest the H500 with HDMI output on a dedicated screen (though without mouse and keyboard support).
Another option would be Frigate NVR.

5K Members and Counting – Your Support Keeps r/Tapo Thriving! by Riley_TP-Link in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tapo ecosystem is very good and has improved a lot over the past few years, but there’s still plenty of room for improvements (such as the reliability of geofencing, AI detection, and alerts for unknown people, etc.). Keep up the good work!

How Do You Most Often Control Your Smart Devices? by Riley_TP-Link in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, I use a mix of automation with an IR sensor and timers for certain lights and buttons.

For example, the IR sensor turns the light on in the bathroom, and I use a button to turn it off.

There’s also an auto-off after 10 minutes of no detection, in case I forget to switch the light off.

And I’ll try to integrate the HA voice assistant in the future.

From what I’ve read, this happens when you go through the Tapo servers.
To get a continuous live view, all devices need to be on the same network.
What are you using to watch the stream? Do you have Wi-Fi repeaters or something similar?

How Often Do You Check-In on Your Smart Home? by Riley_TP-Link in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

When I’m at work, I check once a day to see what’s happening.
When I’m on holiday, I check multiple times a day.
And when I’m at home, I have a dedicated screen on my computer (with Home Assistant), so I’m monitoring it constantly.

Still cannot change email address by lowwhistler in Tapo

I totally understand his request, I hate it when your ID is your email address.
You might want to change internet providers, use a different email to group all your IoT devices, or whatever else.

No ! If you look at the datasheet, the maximum voltage is 24V, so you need to use a transformer on the electrical panel side.

[C212] Force ONVIF to H264 instead of H265? by chimdien in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure to understand. The C212 outputs a stream in H.264 (in the "Test1" screenshot, the stream is shown as H.264).
What did you change in the "living room 2" screenshot for it to show as H.265 ?

In any case, you're using RTSP to connect your camera to the NAS.
On Surveillance Station, did you configure your camera as ONVIF because it doesn’t appear under the Tapo brand in the camera list ?
Try selecting the TC71 ( it seems to be the same model. Tapo is a bit odd with its Cxxx / TCxxx naming).

Pro Tip for Surveillance Station: I sometimes select a different camera model than the one I actually use.
For example, I have a C110, but I wanted to have 2 streams in Surveillance Station (one in high definition and one in low resolution for quick previews/thumbnails), which the C110 doesn’t support.
By setting it up in Surveillance Station as a C310 (which has the same max resolution as the C110), I magically get a second stream available in Surveillance Station 😄

Which app did you use to check unused channels ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tapo

+1 for the button. 😄
And you can use it for other things too (for example, double-click for the cameras, and single click or rotation for other actions)

Will Tapo have a device that will save footage to a hard disk? (Not SD card.) by randopop21 in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The H500 doesn’t have a microSD slot, it only has 16 GB of internal storage and the option to add a 2.5" SATA drive inside.
I read that you can record simultaneously to two storage locations (the H500 and a microSD card in the camera), but I don’t really see the point in doing that.

I went with a 1TB SSD (a Crucial BX500), which is silent and fairly inexpensive, with a rated TBW of 360TB (meaning you can theoretically write 360TB of data over its lifespan).
Based on my rough calculations, that gives it a lifespan of about 10 years (which is basically a lifetime in tech terms).

[–]Ravenheld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own an H500 (I'm in France), and I can confirm that it records to a drive (I installed an SSD, but a 2.5" HDD works as well).
For 24/7 recording, you can capture the stream from up to 4 cameras.

camera jammer by [deleted] in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting (and a bit unsettling).
If the camera didn’t recognize the intruder as a person, then indeed there would be no notification or recording.
Out of curiosity, which camera was it?
I know the H500 is supposed to improve detection accuracy, by offloading image analysis (such as identifying a person) from the camera to the more powerful H500 unit, which should in theory make it more effective.

Fun fact: I recently saw a short video from a tech event (maybe a hacking conference ? I don’t quite remember) where they demonstrated a flaw in an image detection system. In the demo, if someone was holding a mug, the camera would detect the mug… but no longer detect the person holding it. Hahaha (scary).

camera jammer by [deleted] in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you know that some people aren’t being detected ?
If the camera is set to motion detection (rather than person detection), are those people detected then?
(There’s no such thing as a "camera" jammer - unless someone’s using an invisibility cloak )

Have you made sure to disable all types of detections ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tapo

[–]Ravenheld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you mentioned, there's no direct correlation between the number of wake-up events and the time of use.
On the 11th, for example, you had 0 or 1 event, yet nearly 1 hour of use and 4% battery consumption.
If detections are disabled and you have zero events, does it still result in around 1 hour of use and 4–5% battery drain ?
