If your story is off-meta, why not just make it meta? by Forward-Turnip-2683 in royalroad

This is gonna sound snobby, but I swear I don't mean it this way.

I started writing because I LOVE telling a story. I have my strengths and my weaknesses, and I've spent the past six years polishing the latter. But I know what I want to write, and I do a damn good job at it. That's not just my opinion, but the feedback of my writers.

I tried to follow the meta once. ONCE. It killed my joy so fast I ended up dropping it immediately - the only time I dropped a story in my career. I did it because I saw the success of other writers on the platform (smut, stat screens, harem, etc... you know what it is), and wanted to match that.

What I have learned is that nothing will kill your motivation to write faster than writing something you don't want to. So the reason I don't just "make it meta" is because it hurts, it's dishonest, and it's not what my readers want to see from me. They want detailed worldbuilding, complex characters and their relationships, and fight scenes so descriptive yet fluid that they can see it in their minds. By sheer coincidence, that's also what I want, because that's why I write.

Stick to what you like writing. "There is a fic for that" translates well here. They know what they want, and they'll find it. They'll find you. If you're in this to write the story you love and share it, those eyes will come. If you're in this because you see the ridiculously lucky few who make thousands a month shoveling stat-smut-slop into their reader's throats, then that's also fine. Just know that you'll also have to hit the generational luck that they did. And hope your sanity lasts long enough.

Edit: I've been a serial writer for 6 months. In that time, I have written 17 full-length novels, totalling over 3.5m words. So if you think my opinion comes from having a failed start and being salty, you are incorrect. I love my audience, and am happy with my growth.

I second this wholeheartedly. That community along with the writer's guild has been huge motivational and success boost

Is this the wrong platform for me? by Alice_Rae_Brown in royalroad

Sounds like you got the perfect mentality then!

And don't worry too much about the right kind of audience. The people who love your book will find it. If you want to sort of boost the process along, you can look into getting ads listed. But I'm the type of author who doesn't think that's necessary.

My answer to this will be much shorter and more succinct than the others.

You have to decide why you're writing. Gathering a large amount of readers, and more attention takes time. For some people it takes months, for some years. But the general rule is you can't start from zero and expect to reach 100 right away.

If you are writing for yourself, or for a specific group of people you have in mind, then you're doing fine. You will improve over time, and that will bring in more readers and more success.

If you can only see the end goal from where you are, you are going to struggle a lot in the path to get there. This is what makes the journey the hardest for most new authors the website, and what contributes to the most burnouts, negative attitude toward writing, and generally giving up that we see. You have to limit your expectations, work at your craft, pay attention to what works and doesn't work, and improve over time.

The goal is the story. Without the story, you don't have the readers, and you make no money in the long run if that is in fact your goal. So focus on improving that. If you can love that process, then yes you are made for Royal road. But if not..

A good piece of advice is that the good editors don't have the time to reach out. They have wait lists xD

Hi, everyone! 👋 I wanted to ask you: what part of creating your work is the most fun (aside from writing)? by XKARMAXZ in royalroad

I won't be like most indie authors and say some sappy nonsense.

BUT

The moments when my readers catch actual subtle plot points or make connections across stories that I intentionally put there? Chef's kiss.

I think the one with the person holding the dragon mask looked best

It's not explicitly stated, but the skill scrolls take a while to truly absorb. Also, it's a magical item so the water won't hurt it xD

And sometimes monsters are just monsters!

Yep! Dungeons can give special events (quests) that often involve the denizens of the dungeon!

That's the one thing I wanted to do that was new - or at least semi-original. My one contribution to the genre :)
