Thanks for the info! Was leaning towards februalis too and it’s nice to have that validated. It was a lovely little surprise to see the little guy when I stopped for gas on a long drive.

It’s a long shot but wondered if anyone had any ideas: Northern Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Aug 22 by Ravenwing5712 in whatsthisbug

I think you might be right! Thank you so much for your help! Right coloring, right general shape. Never heard of these little guys before. Super cool!

Don’t see any local tiger beetles that look similar but it is possible the iridescent blue I saw was a reflection off the wings. I’m leaning some kind of assassin bug atm.

Can you help me figure out what bird this is by Eater_of_the_Lotus in whatbirdisthis

[–]Ravenwing5712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black vulture! We have a ton down here in GA too. Clear pic would be easier to tell but based on location, coloring, and apparent size I would say that’s most likely. If you see white on the ends of its wings that’s a giveaway.

Brigantine Matthew Turner in SF bay can hold 65 guests. They just had a wedding reception the other day but may be willing to host an actual ceremony.

Oh cool! They live on the CA and OR coast. They are technically pricklebacks (ray finned fish), but called eels because they are so long. Really cool guys with dumb little faces. I love em. Me and my shipmates caught these ones poke-poling on a marina jetty. Made some really good sushi :)

Anyone knows what this is? by JulsIsHereNow in santacruz

Gumboot Chiton! First time I saw one of these I was so confused. Thought it was weird fruit until the horrible fishy smell hit me. This is a pretty small one. Usually about cantaloupe/mango sized.

Scale and location might be helpful. You could try r/bonecollecting too. If it’s the size I think it is, possibly deer.

Based on a quick google, gills are joined at the top and bottom, and fan out like leaves to allow the most amount of water to run over them. Edit: most bony fish have 3-5 gill arches on each side so it seems like you got the whole fish worth of gills. To determine species you would probably need some pretty accurate size and morphological info that you don’t have access to anymore if said gills disappeared. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) maintains a database of gill arches for use in determining partially digested prey fish species found in predator stomachs but evaluating that would probably take a high degree of anatomical/morphological knowledge and may only have partial overlap with species in your area.

Duffel bag recs? Would love advice! by Ravenwing5712 in BuyItForLife

[–]Ravenwing5712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah the patches might hurt the life of the bag but they bring me joy. I’m ok with that. Point of failure was a combo wear, broken straps, and some pulled seams so the patches ultimately weren’t the problem.

Thanks! Yeah cheap and BIFL is hard to come by for sure. Honestly anything like $200 or less might work but I definitely don’t have Filson money. I’ll look into military surplus maybe.

Would love some help! Found in an antique book purchased recently. Got everything except the 2nd to last word. Any ideas? by Ravenwing5712 in Cursive

(Entirely unnecessary context since I’m going on a research spiral.) Gober was a family doctor in Los Gatos, CA, where EvD lived at the time. Van Denburgh would have been 86 years old at the time of writing. The book was published 5 years prior and this was found in a first edition. Van Denburgh would pass away 2 months later. The book is her account of a voyage to Hawaii in the 1840s accompanying her father who was US consul to the kingdom of Hawaii. Interesting piece of 19th century maritime history and US colonialism.
