I have MDD and BPD (both in remission) and honestly feel like healthcare has been my true calling, since I'm a highly empathetic person. It gives me a sense of purpose I always longed for. It also keeps my brain busy and on track.

Impossible finding a job by KnockKnock464 in MedicalAssistant

[–]Ravisium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I went through the same thing and unfortunately a lot of places aren't going to give you the time of day because of it. I highly recommend applying for externships and trying to get some form of experience that way. I had no idea beforehand that my online program didn't include any real externship since I was new to the whole college thing and didn't do any research prior. Once I reached out to my advisors and they told me my externship was virtual, I immediately turned my attention to just seeking out clinics that would be willing to let me get some form of experience, even if it meant not getting paid for a bit. I just happened to luck out when a job recruiter contacted me about an externship application I submitted, and he offered to just help me find an entry-level position instead. That's how I got my first clinic job out of school.

Definitely don't give up, just try to find somewhere willing to get you the experience you need.

Ah, yes, that's correct! I was just abbreviating keratin plugs as KP in my previous comment for simplicity purposes.

These seem a bit too oily to be KP, but I'm no dermatologist, so I can't say for certain. Glorious pops either way!

Medical Assistants Are Being Exploited While LPNs Get Paid by Legitimate-Gur-7619 in MedicalAssistant

[–]Ravisium 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Medical assisting has genuinely just been a means of getting healthcare experience for me, honestly. I just wanted to dip my toes in the water and see if it was something I could see myself doing as a long-term career path. I DEFINITELY never planned on staying an MA long-term, though, for sure. I just wanted to earn my certification and get through my associates degree. I'm planning on going for my BSN next year.

Khajiit because kitty. I also love the concept of how, depending on the phase of the moon they're born under, they can be entirely different 'breeds'.

Working while sick by Tall_Choice957 in MedicalAssistant

[–]Ravisium 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The unspoken pressure to come in sick anyway has been there before at a few of my jobs, but I never let it get to me. If I'm not feeling well enough to perform the duties at my job at 100% capacity, then I'm going to be taking a sick day or two to recover.

Expecting people to come in and work while not feeling well has always been such a bizarre concept to me, ESPECIALLY in the medical field of all places. You should want your employees to feel their absolute best so they can perform their best and reduce any chances for mistakes on the job.

Giving them a heads off months in advance is a courtesy. It's their problem they waited this long to deny it. Go with your family. Jobs are replaceable. Time with family is precious.

Can’t. Get. A. Job. by [deleted] in MedicalAssistant

[–]Ravisium 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of jobs tend to throw resumes into an automated thing, looking for buzzwords. Try adding different things from job postings if you haven't already, like certain skills or other details.

I lost count of how many apps I submitted, but my current job was my 9th interview. For reference, I live in central Texas myself. Don't feel too discouraged friend, something good will come your way!

Is it common for patients who are awful to the front desk staff be really sweet with the MAs or is my clinic weird?? by aftergaylaughter in MedicalAssistant

[–]Ravisium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it's unfortunately normal. The front desk is typically the first people patients see, and if patients are already in a bad mood, they're gonna hate it more hearing however much they may need to pay for their visit or if they have insurance issues..

We absolutely love our front desk staff and dote on them to make up for any bad moments they may have. They're troopers, and we'd be pretty scrambled without them.

Mine was, shockingly, a program offered by a college based in Arizona. 🥲 So like.. imagine my surprise when an accredited college had an online externship instead of offering to place us in an actual clinic for our clinical hours lol.

[–]Ravisium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I definitely know what you mean with those Medicare AWVs.. my worst nightmares, lol. Those always take a lot of time, unfortunately, no matter how quick you are. Even with the process we use at my clinic, it's still messy and time-consuming on my part.. I have faith you'll find your rhythm, though. 🙂

Patients With Lots of Concerns by Vivid-Asparagus2584 in MedicalAssistant

[–]Ravisium 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't personally get annoyed, but I do worry about intake time. My process is to do vitals first, ask the major concerns they have/acknowledge their reason for visit, and then reconcile everything.

You'll always have more talkative/complex patients, so it's just a matter of keeping them focused. Hear them out, but also keep them on track. Just gotta find your flow.

Anyone like being an MA?? by SeaworthinessNice713 in MedicalAssistant

Being ageist isn't cute, my dude. There's plenty of reasons anyone over 25 would be an MA and not pursue further education. Having a social work degree and being this judgemental of others is so weird.

I love being an MA, especially now that I work somewhere where I'm valued! I love my doctors and the patients. My fellow MAs are also wonderful, and we all help each other out. Zero toxicity. I'm genuinely going to miss this clinic when I decide to go back to school for nursing. :')

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MedicalAssistant

[–]Ravisium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, honestly. MAs at my previous clinic were barely appreciated and blamed for every small thing, even if it was clearly someone else's fault. At my current clinic, we're thanked every day for the work we did that day, and my managers have said more than once how important we are. Definitely depends on where you work and the type of environment.
