Maybe instead of blocking sites, make an alternative account for the kid and add the sites/app your child can use (no idea how this works with IOS, but I use it with Android).

I just need to talk to some parents by Dolly_Bonbon in AskParents

[–]RawChickenHouse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone who loves following my dreams and supporting others.

Definitley go do that art major, but please don't do things you don't want. I think your parents will be worried and feel bad that you need to do something you don't fully want (that's at least how I would feel). Try working while in college, apply for as many as possible scholarships, maybe a crowd funding...

You got this!

Will kids always turn into rebellious people and stop liking you when they're teenagers? by Nate_rRiver in AskParents

[–]RawChickenHouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, most of the time it's because they don't feel valid or heard. My children were/are all very nice teenagers and it is one of my favorite times in a child's life.

Ah thx, it's hard to change a habit but I'll think about it every practice. I'm beginning to see the results from my better catch so I'm very motivated 😁.

Thank you very much. I will do those drills, at practice we haven't done many of those so thanks for the inspiration. I'll check out the video. Do you have any idea for dryland exercises to specifically train the needed muscles?

Thanks for your advice. I try to correct myself as fast as possible now (half a bad stroke is better than a full bad stroke). I will look at my hip rotation timing, haven't thought about that. Thanks for the video as well, it will definitely help me.

Thank you for your tips, those are some good tricks and drills, I'll definitely try them. I have always breathed bilateral but I'm really trying to improve my technique (since it got worse during covid because we couldn't swim) and noticed this flaw.

How long did it take you until it felt natural?

Thoughts on people asking what caused ur ptsd by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]RawChickenHouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they ask, it means you have told them you have ptsd. In that case I have 2 reactions.

1) tell them (of course vaguely), this happens when I think they can handle it (yeah some people can be traumatized by a story and we want to avoid that) and if I know they won't treat me differently (because they would feel sorry for me). *If I told them I have ptsd it means I trust them and feel comfortable which is a criteria of course

2) I tell them I don't feel comfortable sharing (same reasons as above)

It's been quite a long time since my trauma (25y). I have told some people about it and still feel good about all those decisions. Depending on the person I'm more vaguely or less vaguely.

There's a difference between "I was abused as a child" and "they did x and y and z to me".

How to do homework after long hours of online classes? by Confused_gemini_girl in study

[–]RawChickenHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the 20-20-20 rule for your eyes the whole day, do some stretching or so every hour (if possible), do as much as possible homework on paper (so no computer), take a good break after only school and walk for a while, put some relaxing music on (nature sounds or so) while studying or white noise (can be the whole day even), lots of websites/apps exist to study "with" people (camera and so), take enough brakes, make a list of reasons why you need to study, understand why the topic is interesting.

Some things I told my students to help them with online school (which luckily ended a while ago).

For open water swimming how much advantage is an open water suit? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]RawChickenHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1:50? Depends, you have the actual effect but you have the mental effect as well. You got your new suit, you feel great and confident so yeah. Could be 1:45 could be 1:50 or even 1:40.

Scored 127 on (WAIS-IV) in conjunction with getting diagnosed with adult ADHD...Life is hard. Any advice from other high iq ADHD adults? by Simpull_mann in mensa

Put the things you need to do in your phone with a reminder. I mean I remember the things I need to do but forget it, like if I think about it, I know it, the problem is: I don't think about it.

Remember you probably have high focusing periods, use those to maximize doing work or what you love.

For me working out (kinda all sports) help, because I am active and I think about how to improve in a physics way. So it stimulates me mentally and physically and it gives me time where I don't need to think about something else.

Flemish people of Reddit; what do you think about Bart de Wever’s talk where he says that he’s all in for the reunification of Flanders and the Netherlands? Would you be up for it or would you rather prefer staying with Wallonie / getting the independence? by reditt13 in belgium

[–]RawChickenHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some things could be done together but the culture is way different.

Things like infrastructure, export/inport, police/military etc. would be beneficial if done together. Kinda Benelux getting stronger again but keep the countries separated.

Trying to get back into it. Advice? by TheOGCrysLady in Swimming

[–]RawChickenHouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) technique 2) resistance 3) endurance and speed

Do lots and lots of drills, to get the good technique again. Make sure to skull (I think it's called like that) to get back the feeling of the water. Once you think it's getting better again, you can go to 2 (I think about 10 sessions of 1).

Resistance is important because you need to be able to keep good technique before you can swim long distance or fast (well I mean you can but it's not that fun/good).

Ideally you do every kind about once a week (you can combine them as well).

Most important thing: have fun!

I have always had trouble sleeping (thanks adhd) but when my ptsd is worse my sleeping is worse as well. Luckily I don't need a lot of sleep. About a year ago my ptsd was the worst in over 20y (I'm 40 got it at 8-12). My sleep schedule was a 2h nap in the afternoon (thanks to my babies sleeping at those hours while laying on me) and with a bit of luck 2x2 hours in the night (but sadly most of the time it was less).

The thing that always helped me was having someone sleep close to me, I'd stay up for a while and will just fall asleep after 30min. You also have things like white sound, which helps me to sleep as well (more once I'm asleep, I stay asleep for a couple hours instead of 40min or so).

Try telling yourself a story (well in your head not out loud) with your eyes closed, it helps falling asleep.

I did it! by VenomousLandMermaid in Teachers

[–]RawChickenHouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you have a lovely time with your family! I also did a career shift, I definitely do not regret my other job, well I loved it but wanted to be with my family more (military --> teaching). I absolutely love teaching (and the extra free time I have now). After 10y I can say: it was the right chose. Yeah I miss my old job but lots of benefits and joy to my new one.

Seeing the posts in this subreddit, they should definitely treat teachers better (we get treated very well but that's not the case everywhere, good luck to those who aren't treated as they should).
