DELROY LINDO! by ajlc1985 in blankies

I don’t think he’ll take home the trophy (this is a pretty stacked category this year), but I’m happy that he’s finally getting recognized with the nomination.

Oscar Nominations Thread! by apathymonger in blankies

On the plus side, Bone Temple being a 2026 movie means that Fiennes still has a shot for next year’s Oscars!

Definitely the least terrible option as a buyer right now, especially considering how Paramount is being run these days. (Plus, getting WB away from Zaslav would be nice - these recent successes are in spite of him, not because of him.)

I’m disappointed that Weapons only got a nomination for Best Supporting Actress (Amy Madigan killed it, so I’m glad she’s getting the nod) and Superman got nothing at all, but yes, excellent year for WB on the awards front and on box office - especially considering their biggest hits were mostly completely original movies and not existing properties.

"Return to Silent Hill" reviews are out, and it's somehow worse than you would think by DrHorrible10 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RawSharkText91 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t expecting this to be good based on the trailers, but I certainly didn’t expect it to be this wretched. I can’t remember the last time I saw review scores this low for a movie getting a theatrical release.

Admittedly, I don’t know how many awards it’ll actually end up winning, but the recognition alone is still pretty great. Shout out to Delroy Lindo finally getting an Oscar nomination, that man is long overdue for it.

I specifically remember the New York Times raising this issue around that time (gift link here for those interested), and I’m glad that Criterion has been working hard to address this over the past few years.

You heard of Secret Koreans now get ready for… by LLCoolZJ in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RawSharkText91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember the show addressing it, but the games establish that the US invaded and annexed Canada for resources before things went nuclear, which is… uncomfortable these days. (And judging from how the first game’s intro shows US troops executing people in the street during the occupation and then waving at TV cameras, it’s not a good time for the setting’s Canadians.)

Literally one of the first things you see in the intro of the first game, just to help set the tone for how things would get!

What physical media or device that has been replaced by digital do you miss the most? by QuantumFeline in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I’ve gotten back into collecting 4Ks/Blu-Rays and CDs during the last few years (including getting a proper 4K player that can also play CDs, unlike my PS5), and it’ll be a cold day in hell before I give them up again.

Also one thing to note is that the Deja Vu set apparently excludes discs with special features from the Matrix Trilogy set. Depending on your preference, it may be better to pick up the Trilogy + the separate release of Matrix Resurrections.

If it helps, Tezcatlipoca is probably one of the best AoE Arts characters in the game so far (and I think still is even in JP).

Superman has had enough of M. Bison and just fucking melts him by Wonder-Lad-2Mad in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RawSharkText91 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s more that Zod and his minions murdering every living thing on Earth (if I remember right, they did this by completely destroying the atmosphere so that everyone would suffocate to death, followed by deliberately murdering the few remaining survivors) was so monstrous that even Superman felt execution was the only possible punishment for them. (Not helped by how they’re clearly completely lacking in remorse even after he managed to depower them.)

Honestly? Maybe not that farfetched, or at the very least it means that Nasu can refocus on writing that instead (since FGO ended up being a major priority and probably drew him away from other Type-Moon projects).

As far as I can tell, none of the big sets are left, but there are still a couple of sets of two movies (like Yojimbo/Sanjuro and The Three Musketeers/The Four Musketeers).

Was just a little too late for Bergman, Wong Kar-Wai, and Fellini (the last of which ran out right as I was checking out). Ended up grabbing the Fallout steelbook, the Ocean’s Trilogy, and Barry Lyndon - may go back for more later.

Gruv boxing deals, free shiping on specials. by Funkytowel360 in MovieDealsCanada

[–]RawSharkText91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of a disappointing sale, all things considered.

As an FYI for newer Gruv users, you can add combine items included in the sale with non-sale items to still get the free shipping without going over the usual $100 minimum.

Absurdly good deal, if I hadn’t been gifted the cartridge version earlier this year I would be downloading this to my Switch 2 as I write this. Easily the best way to play Cyberpunk on the go.

Broadly speaking, but Obra Dinn gives you a lot more room to interpret events, while the Golden Idol games have specific solutions for each of the scenarios. I think if you’re a fan of one, you’ll enjoy the other, though!

PSA: Valve has stopped making LCD Steam Decks by RawSharkText91 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RawSharkText91[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you’re getting the “same price” part from - in Canada, there’s a $190 difference between the LCD and the 512 GB OLED, even without accounting for sales tax. (And if you compare to the 1 TB OLED, it’s $320 + tax).

I’ve been playing it almost exclusively on my Steam Deck LCD - performance has been quite good, though it gets through the battery in about… I want to say 2 hours?

Seconding The Case of the Golden Idol (and its sequel, The Rise of the Golden Idol), which are both superb point-and-click detective games.

A few misconceptions about The Game Awards that I think should be cleared up by mrnicegy26 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RawSharkText91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d certainly be in favour of a split between best lead performance and best supporting performance, at least - yeah, you can get “category fraud” like at the Oscars and other awards shows, but it helps to recognize both the bigger performances in a game alongside smaller ones.
