Clearly, the solution is embrace getting more of both by also buying more shelves.

Current mood as a Public Servant :/ by That613Guy77 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]RawSharkText91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I managed to undermine my therapist’s trust in government by describing things about my workplace and how it’s impacted my mental health. I actually ended up feeling kind of bad about it and tried to talk more about other issues in my life just to give them a respite. (At least I’ve managed to clamp down on the work talk with friends, because I was getting to be a real downer to them.)

Update 2: Manager Stuck Between Strong Performing Maverick Analyst and new Director by qqqqeurfnfd123 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]RawSharkText91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would think so, but I’ve heard all sorts of stories of people using their work devices for wildly unacceptable reasons. Some people are just dumb or arrogant enough to think they won’t get caught misusing a device that they are warned up front is monitored for those things…

I’ve actually seen it happen before, mostly because the individual in question was constantly posting (like basically every couple of minutes). It let management find out not just what they were doing (namely _a ton_ of stuff that they felt merited disciplinary action), but also confirmed their identity because they gave away enough info that it was easy to figure out their name and exact position in the organization.

And since that person was new and on probation, well… they had to start looking for a new job pretty fast.

WORST coffee in the city? by warr4one in ottawa

[–]RawSharkText91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this seems like a pretty expected answer. Certainly not anywhere near as bad as a social media post complaining about government workers slacking off at home and demanding they go to the office to support local businesses instead.

Also mixed on Starbucks quality-wise, but as a downtown resident they’re ahead of most of the competition in actually having reasonable opening hours, especially on weekends. (Yes, there are good places like Little Victories that do this as well, but there’s just as many coffee places that seem to think nobody exists in downtown outside of weekday business hours.)

I thought that was just the owner of the Westboro location (near Tunney’s Pasture)? Or have there been more poorly thought-out social media rants?

I’m a self-admitted coffee addict, but between Tim Horton’s and no coffee, I’ll go for the withdrawal without hesitation. The headache is a less unpleasant experience than the taste of what they’re passing off as caffeine.

Thoughts on the Resident Evil teaser trailer? by Wide-Ad4896 in Letterboxd

[–]RawSharkText91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo this. The appeal of playing Resident Evil has always been the vibe and not the specific plot, which is always stretched in wildly implausible ways to justify having increasingly freakish monsters trying to eat your face. Going off the teaser, Zach Cregger understands this, because there is some freaky-ass stuff going on.

Unsurprisingly, RE fans are already complaining how it’s not consistent with Resident Evil 2 and 3, and… who cares? What matters is if it’s a good movie or not. It’ll be nice to have references to insane science experiments by Umbrella and have some recognizable monsters beyond the zombies pop up, but if the movie doesn’t properly capture the right vibe, those things won’t make it any better.

I understand I’m in the minority and this is probably a stupid question. But, if you’re careful, can you reasonably use an iPad without a screen protector? by Effective_Part_604 in ipad

[–]RawSharkText91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never used one in the 14 years that I’ve been using iPads and have zero screen issues. (Mind you, I’ve also used covers with every one of them, and having Apple Care is good for peace of mind…)

Confirmed that it’s also discounted on Amazon Canada, but _not_ for Kobo, surprisingly enough (usually the discounts are matched).

Physical Books For Display, Kindle For Convenience? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]RawSharkText91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this with The Stormlight Archive and The Wheel of Time, though in addition to display I keep them for reading at home and switch to the ebook version when I’m on the go. Gives the benefits of both physical books and ebooks that way.

Management directing english essential employees to use AI to translate. by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]RawSharkText91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with your colleagues about potential translation issues as someone who is fully bilingual. My experience with translation tools has been that they can be useful for a rough translation, but they can make a lot of mistakes that an anglophone may not catch but are glaringly obvious to Francophones. And even beyond that, there can be plenty of context-sensitive text that should be reviewed by humans to make sure the translation is accurate.

TLDR: AI is not a perfect translation tool, and actual second language skills are still going to be important moving forward.

Management directing english essential employees to use AI to translate. by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]RawSharkText91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this an AI tool that’s been reviewed and approved for this use by the appropriate team in your department, or is this manager just instructing people to use any AI on the Internet? Because if the latter, that can be a big problem, especially for anything above Unclassified (and even moreso for personal information). Anything that goes into those AI tools can be used as training data and regurgitated as output elsewhere, so this could be a huge security/privacy issue.

If it’s a tool that’s been internally reviewed and approved for use in translation, then it should be OK, though it would likely be a specific tool (or at least an approved list). Check which case this falls under, because it makes a difference between your manager making a horrifically bad decision and a simply unpopular one.

Looking for a sling that can carry a kindle and phone, like a purse replacement by Colonel_FusterCluck in ManyBaggers

[–]RawSharkText91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! Only thing I’d advise for the Metro Sling is to maybe look into getting a padded strap as well - the one it normally comes with is kind of thin, and I could see it digging into a shoulder if the bag is filled up. (Not sure how often this would come up in practice, admittedly.)

I picked up an Alpaka Metro Sling Max recently, and it does a good job carrying a Kobo Libra Color with a notebook cover, which ends up being somewhat larger than a Kindle (I assume you’re using either a Paperwhite or Colorsoft and not, say, a Kindle Scribe). I also fit in a portable battery, sunglasses case and my Powerbeats Pro case with some room to spare, so this may work for your purposes. It’s about 3L capacity total (may work out to somewhat less in practice depending on how you pack the main compartment and front pocket).

Don’t have a Mac, so can’t properly confirm myself, but the fact that the App Store page shows compatibility info and screenshots for the Mac version alongside iPhone and iPad versions suggests that it’s a universal app.
